6 Chinese sites named UNESCO Global Geoparks

我国六处公园获联合国教科文组织批准列入世界地质公园网络名录

2024-03-28 浏览

The Mount Changbaishan Geopark, along with five other Chinese geoparks, were named as Global Geoparks by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Wednesday.

"UNESCO's Executive Board has endorsed the addition of 18 sites to the UNESCO Global Geoparks network. This brings the total number of geoparks to 213 in 48 countries." the Paris-based UN body said in a statement.

Among the newly designated sites, the Mount Changbaishan Geopark is located in China's northeastern Jilin Province, which hosts dramatic landforms and diverse rock types that document significant multiphase volcanic eruptions.

The "millennium eruption," which took place around 1,000 years ago, is one of the largest volcanic eruptions in modern history and has left a lasting impact, creating special pyroclastic accumulations of international significance.

The five others are Enshi Grand Canyon-Tenglongdong Cave Geopark in Hubei Province, Linxia Geopark in the Gansu Province, Longyan Geopark in Fujian Province, Wugongshan Geopark in Jiangxi Province and Xingyi Geopark in Guizhou Province.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Wednesday made remarks on the Dasu bomb attack in Pakistan, saying that China strongly condemns this terrorist attack, and asks Pakistan to thoroughly investigate the incident as soon as possible.

The spokesperson said that at around 1 pm local time on March 26, five Chinese and one Pakistani national were killed in a terrorist attack on the convoy of the Dasu Hydropower Project undertaken by a Chinese company in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

China strongly condemns this terrorist attack. We express deep condolences to the deceased and extend sincere sympathies to the bereaved families. China asks Pakistan to thoroughly investigate the incident as soon as possible, hunt down the perpetrators, and bring them to justice, said the spokesperson.

"Meanwhile, we ask Pakistan to take effective measures to ensure the safety and security of Chinese nationals, projects, and institutions in Pakistan. China is working with Pakistan on the follow-up operation with an all-out effort," said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson noted that the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan has reminded Chinese citizens and businesses in Pakistan to closely follow the local security situation, strengthen security measures, and do their best to take extra safety precautions against terrorist attacks.

On the afternoon of March 26, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif visited the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan to convey condolences and sympathize with the deceased families and the Chinese government. He strongly condemned the terrorist attack and said that terrorists' despicable efforts to harm Pakistan-China friendship will never succeed. On the same day, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, foreign minister, interior minister, and several other political figures strongly condemned the attack and offered condolences to the deceased.

China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic cooperative partners and iron-clad friends, and China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) greatly contributes to the socioeconomic development of Pakistan. Any attempt to undermine China-Pakistan cooperation will never succeed. China opposes all forms of terrorism and firmly supports Pakistan in fighting terrorism. China will work with Pakistan even more firmly to fully ensure the safety and security of Chinese nationals, projects, and institutions in Pakistan, said the spokesperson.

6 workers presumed dead after crippled cargo ship knocks down Baltimore bridge

美国巴尔的摩市桥梁因一艘货船撞击而坍塌,6人失踪

2024-03-27 浏览

Six workers were missing and presumed dead from a bridge that collapsed in Baltimore Harbor early on Tuesday after a massive cargo ship crippled by a power loss rammed into the structure, forcing the closure of one of the busiest ports on the US Eastern Seaboard.

With dive teams facing increasingly treacherous conditions in the darkened, wreckage-strewn waters, active search-and-rescue operations were suspended about 18 hours after the accident, US Coast Guard and Maryland State Police officials said.

Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said there was no hope of finding the missing workers alive due to the frigid water and the length of time elapsed since the accident.

State Police Colonel Roland Butler said authorities hoped to return divers to the water after sunrise on Wednesday in an effort to recover the workers' remains.

The Singapore-flagged container vessel named Dali, heading out of Baltimore Harbor bound for Sri Lanka, plowed into a support pylon of the Francis Scott Key Bridge over the mouth of the Patapsco River at about 1:30am (5:30am GMT).

A trestled section of the 2.57-km span almost immediately crumpled into the icy water, sending vehicles and people into the river.

Rescuers pulled two survivors to safety, one of whom was hospitalized. They and the six missing were part of a work crew filling potholes on the road surface of the bridge, officials said earlier.

Bigger disaster averted

The ship reported a power failure before impact, which enabled officials to stop traffic on the bridge before the collapse.

"By being able to stop cars from coming over the bridge, these people are heroes. They saved lives last night," Maryland Governor Wes Moore said at a midday news briefing. The bridge was up to code with no known structural issues, Moore said.

There was no evidence of foul play, officials said.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott described a scene of twisted metal shooting into the sky.

"It was something out of an action movie. It was something you never thought you'd see," he said.

Video footage on social media showed the vessel slamming into the bridge in darkness, the headlights of vehicles visible on the span as it crashed into the water and the ship caught fire.

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the closure of one of the country's busiest shipping lanes until further notice would have a "major and protracted impact to supply chains." The Port of Baltimore handles more automobile cargo than any other US port — more than 750,000 vehicles in 2022, according to port data.

General Motors and Ford Motor will reroute affected shipments, but the companies said the disruption would be minimal.

The 288.95-meter vessel had experienced a momentary loss of propulsion and dropped anchors as part of emergency procedures before impact, its management company, Synergy Marine Pte Ltd reported, according to the Singapore Port Authority.

The Dali, owned by Grace Ocean Pte Ltd, rammed into one of the pillars of the bridge, according to Synergy. All 22 crew members aboard the vessel were accounted for, it said.

Besides impacts to auto shipments, the port closure could force shippers to divert Baltimore-bound cargo from containers to bulk material. It could create bottlenecks and increase delays and costs on the Eastern seaboard, experts say.

President Joe Biden said the US Coast Guard responded quickly to the mayday call and commended the fast action of Maryland transportation officials who closed the bridge before it was struck.

Biden promised to visit Baltimore as soon as possible and said he wanted the federal government to pay to rebuild the bridge.

"I'm directing my team to move heaven and Earth to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge as soon as humanly possible," Biden said. The bridge, named for the author of the Star-Spangled Banner, opened in 1977.

Britain's hype-up of so-called cyber attacks by China 'slander': Chinese embassy

中国大使馆:英方炒作所谓“中国网络攻击”

2024-03-26 浏览

Britain's claim that China was responsible for cyber campaigns targeting Britain is "completely unfounded and constitutes malicious slander," the Chinese embassy in Britain said in a statement on Monday.

China firmly opposes and strongly condemns this and has made a solemn protest to the British side, said the statement.

"We have firmly fought and stopped all kinds of malicious cyber activities in accordance with the law, and have never encouraged, supported or condoned cyberattacks," said the statement, noting that China is a major victim of cyberattacks.

China has always adhered to the principle of non-interference in others' internal affairs and has no interest or need to meddle in Britain's internal affairs, it said.

"The UK falsely accused China of attempting to interfere with UK democracy. This is nothing more than a publicity stunt. This is also a typical example of a thief crying 'catch thief,'" said the statement.

China has always stood against illegal unilateral sanctions and will make a justified and necessary response to this, it said.

"We strongly urge the UK to immediately stop spreading false information about China, stop such self-staged, anti-China farces, and refrain from going further down the wrong path that leads only to failure," it added.

Former head of Chinese Football Association sentenced to life in prison for bribery

中国足协原主席受贿被判无期徒刑

2024-03-26 浏览

A court in central China's Hubei Province on Tuesday sentenced Chen Xuyuan, former head of the Chinese Football Association (CFA), to life in prison for bribery.

Chen has been deprived of political rights for life and all of his personal property will be confiscated, according to the court ruling, adding that his illegal gains will be recovered and turned over to the state treasury.

The Huangshi Intermediate People's Court found that Chen took advantage of his various posts from 2010 to 2023, including those related to the CFA, to help others in matters regarding project contracting, investment operations, and sporting event arrangements. In return, he accepted money and valuables worth over 81 million yuan (US$11.42 million).

While serving at the CFA, Chen sought unfair benefits for multiple football clubs and local football associations regarding sporting event arrangements, team promotions in the league and referees' decisions, seriously undermining the order of fair competition and the industry's ecology, and bringing tremendous damage to the country's football cause, according to the court ruling.

He was also found to have helped others in personnel promotions and arrangements, according to the court.

The court said that about 4 million yuan of the bribes were not actually obtained by Chen. Furthermore, Chen had been cooperative in the investigation and in returning his illegal gains, which was taken into consideration when handing down the sentence.

WMO issues red alert over record-breaking climate change indicators

世界气象组织发布红色警报,气候变化指标超出预警

2024-03-20 浏览

The United Nations' climate chief issued a red alert on Tuesday as new data showed that records for every single climate indicator were shattered in 2023.

The UN's climate agency, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), has released a new report on the state of the global climate in 2023. It shows that last year, records were broken for various climate change indicators like greenhouse gas levels, surface temperatures, ocean heat and acidification, rising sea levels, Antarctic sea ice cover and glacier retreat.

"This annual report shows that the climate crisis is the defining challenge that humanity faces," WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo said at a press conference in Geneva. "It is closely intertwined with the inequality crisis, as witnessed by growing food insecurity, population displacement and biodiversity loss."

Heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires and rapidly intensifying tropical cyclones led to misery and mayhem last year, the report underlined, upending life for millions and inflicting many billions of dollars in economic losses.

The WMO confirmed that 2023 was the warmest year on record, with an average global temperature of 1.45 degrees Celsius, with a margin of uncertainty of 0.12 degrees Celsius, above the pre-industrial level.

"Never have we been so close — albeit on a temporary basis at the moment — to the 1.5 degree Celsius lower limit of the Paris Agreement on climate change," said the WMO chief.

Over 90 percent of the ocean had experienced heatwave conditions at some point during 2023, and a global set of reference glaciers suffered the largest loss of ice on record, the WMO report showed.

Antarctic sea ice extent retreated to its lowest level ever, with 1 million square kilometers fewer at the end of winter than the previous record year, equivalent to the size of France and Germany combined.

"Earth's issuing a distress call," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a video message at the conference. "The latest State of the Global Climate report shows a planet on the brink. Fossil fuel pollution is sending climate chaos off the charts."

Meanwhile, observed concentrations of the three main greenhouse gases — carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide — reached record levels in 2022 and continued to increase in 2023. Carbon dioxide levels are 50 percent higher than in the pre-industrial era.

"The long lifetime of CO2 means that temperatures will continue to rise for many years to come," the report warned.

Bereaved father blames plasma company for teenage son's sudden death

死者父亲质疑血浆公司导致其子死亡

Local authorities in north China's Shanxi Province have launched an investigation into the sudden death of a 19-year-old boy shortly after donating blood 16 times within eight months.

The plasma company involved, Xinzhou Tiantan Biological Apheresis Plasma Co Ltd, has been closed for rectification, the district government in Shanxi's Xinzhou City said in a statement on Tuesday. The company is a subsidiary of the China National Pharmaceutical Group Co Ltd.

Zhao Wei died at home in Xinzhou on January 15. His father, Zhao Zhijie, said he found a thick stack of receipts under his son's mattress, indicating that Zhao had donated plasma 16 times within eight consecutive months up to last December, Jinan Daily reported.

A medical exam report found in his belongings, issued by a local hospital 10 days before Zhao's death, diagnosed him with severe anemia and suspected hematopoietic dysfunction.

Zhao Zhijie said that WeChat chats on his son's phone revealed that he had approached the plasma company through a man surnamed Lu in May 2023. Each time he donated plasma, the boy reportedly received 260-300 yuan (US$36-42) as compensation, and the station even provided a "door-to-door" service.

The father believed that the plasma station deceived young people into frequently selling blood, leading to blood regenerative dysfunction and eventually his death.

The eastern and middle routes of China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project have benefited more than 176 million people, China South-to-North Water Diversion Co., Ltd. said Monday.

The project has transferred over 70 billion cubic meters of water to the drought-prone north via the eastern and middle routes, according to the company.

Metropolises like Beijing and Tianjin, have relied on the project as a major water source, said the company, adding that the project has improved the economic and social development space for more than 40 large and medium-sized cities.

The middle route of the project has replenished 10 billion cubic meters of water for ecological purposes over the past years and revived many rivers and lakes, it said.

The country's South-to-North Water Diversion Project has three routes. The middle route, which is the most prominent one, begins at the Danjiangkou Reservoir in central China's Hubei Province and runs through Henan and Hebei before reaching Beijing and Tianjin.

The eastern route has transferred water from east China's Jiangsu Province to areas such as Tianjin and Shandong. Meanwhile, planning is currently underway for the western route.
