May feels the heat as Tories revolt

2019-05-24 浏览

UK Prime Minister Theresa May was clinging to power yesterday after her final Brexit gambit backfired, overshadowing a European election that has shown a United Kingdom still riven over its divorce from the EU.

May’s departure will deepen the Brexit crisis as a new leader is likely to want a more decisive split, raising the chances of a confrontation with the European Union and an election that could usher in a socialist government.

In such a fluid situation, Britain faces an array of options including an orderly exit with a deal, a no-deal exit, an election or a second referendum that could ultimately reverse the 2016 decision to leave the EU.

May, who won the top job in the turmoil that followed the 2016 referendum on EU membership, has repeatedly failed to get parliament’s approval for her divorce deal, which she pitched as a way to heal Britain’s Brexit divisions.

Her last gambit, offering a possible second referendum and closer trading arrangements with the EU, triggered a revolt by some Brexit-supporting ministers and triggered the resignation of her parliamentary business manager.

With Britons voting in a European election yesterday in which pre-poll surveys suggested May’s Conservatives would be thrashed by Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party, May was digging in. The government said it would publish legislation to enact May’s EU deal, originally due today, next month, and her spokesman said she would be listening to colleagues’ concerns.

Asked if she was planning to rewrite the legislation, he said, “She is focused on delivering Brexit... The prime minister wants to ensure that the UK leaves the EU with a deal, and the only way to leave with a deal is by ratifying the Withdrawal Agreement.”

The mass-circulation Sun newspaper’s front page was headlined “May set to go after Brexit fiasco,” while the Times led with “May prepares to quit after cabinet mutiny.”

Foreign minister Jeremy Hunt said May would still be prime minister when US President Donald Trump arrives for a state visit on June 3.

EU supporters fear Brexit will undermine Britain’s economy — fifth-largest in the world — as well as London’s position as one of the world’s top two financial capitals. They also say it will weaken the West as it grapples with Trump’s unpredictable presidency.

May, who has been obdurate through one of the most tumultuous premierships of recent British history, had promised to leave office if lawmakers approved her Brexit deal, but is now under intense pressure to name a date.

Sterling, which tumbled on the 2016 Brexit vote to its biggest one-day fall since the early 1970s, dropped 0.4 percent to a new 4-1/2 month low of US$1.26. The yield on Britain’s 10-year bond fell to 0.99 percent, the lowest since March 29, the day Britain had been due to leave the EU.

Nearly three years after Britain voted by 52 percent to 48 percent to leave the EU, it remains unclear how, when or even whether it will leave the European club it joined in 1973. The current deadline to leave is October 31.

When May goes, her Conservative Party will elect a leader who is likely to want to renegotiate the deal she agreed with the EU in November, raising the chances of a confrontation with the bloc and a national election.

The bookmakers’ favorite to succeed May is Boris Johnson, the face of the official campaign to leave the EU, who has said he wants a more decisive split. More than a dozen others are seen as potential candidates.

"Today the election results have been announced. A new prime minister will take over. Our countrymen have given their verdict, and we respect that," Gandhi said.

China unveils 600 kph maglev train prototype

2019-05-23 浏览

China on Thursday rolled off the production line a prototype magnetic-levitation train with a designed top speed of 600 km per hour in the eastern city of Qingdao.

The debut of China's first high-speed maglev train testing prototype marks a major breakthrough for the country in the high-speed maglev transit system.

The testing prototype can check and optimize the key technologies and core system components of the high-speed maglev system and lay a technological basis for the forthcoming engineering prototype, said Ding Sansan, head of the train's research and development team and deputy chief engineer of CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co, the train builder.

"Now the prototype has achieved static levitation and is in good condition," Ding said.

The train builder is currently building an experimental center and a trial production center for the high-speed maglev trains and expected to put them into operation in the second half of the year, he said.

The research and development of a five-carriage engineering prototype are going smoothly.

The engineering prototype is scheduled to roll off the production line in 2020 and go through comprehensive tests to finish integrated verification in 2021.

US crackdown on Huawei typical economic bullying: Chinese FM

2019-05-23 浏览

With the use of state power, Washington's groundless crackdown on Chinese private company Huawei is typical economic bullying, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters Wednesday.

During a press conference on the sidelines of the meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Council of Foreign Ministers, Wang said some people in the United States do not want China to have legitimate rights to development and attempt to impede China's development process.

A typical example is that Washington uses its state power to unjustifiably suppress Huawei without any factual basis, Wang said, adding that "this is typical economic bullying."

The Bureau of Industry and Security of the US Department of Commerce earlier put Huawei and its affiliates on an "Entity List," which restricts the sale or transfer of US technologies to the company. The ban has triggered opposition from markets worldwide.

"A just cause attracts much support, an unjust one finds little," said Wang, quoting an idiom said by Mencius, an ancient Chinese philosopher.

Such an egocentric approach by the the United States will not win the recognition and support of the international community, said Wang.

The SCO Council of Foreign Ministers on Wednesday adopted a press communique in which the members jointly oppose all forms of unilateralism and trade protectionism.

The communique particularly stressed their opposition to discriminatory practices against mutually beneficial international cooperation in the fields of digital economy and communication technology under any pretext.

China's stance on the trade frictions initiated by Washington gained understanding and support from the foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization members, Wang said.

Wang said he has briefed his counterparts on the situation about the trade frictions at the SCO ministerial meeting.

The setback in the trade negotiations was caused by the US consistent refusal to resolve China's reasonable concerns and its use of extreme pressure, Wang told his counterparts.

China's response is aimed not only at safeguarding its own rightful interests, but also safeguarding the norms of international relations and protecting the free trade system, Wang stressed.

Noting that no unfair deals can be reached or recognized, Wang said that if the United States is ready for talks in an equal way, China's door is wide open; but if Washington chooses to exert extreme pressure, China will fight to the very end.

The SCO members will jointly oppose any form of unilateralism and trade protectionism, according to a joint communique issued by the ministers following their talks.

Jakarta clashes kill 6, injure over 200

2019-05-23 浏览

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said yesterday that six people had died and over 200 injured after clashes broke out between police and demonstrators in the capital after midnight.

“As of 9am today, some 200 were injured and six killed,” the Jakarta governor said in Tarakan hospital in central Jakarta.

The clashes broke out over the presidential election, and near the election supervisory body (Bawaslu) building.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters, most of them supporters of the defeated presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto. Some 20 protesters were arrested during the clashes.

Protesters burned down a police housing facility and several vehicles in KS Tubun Street in central Jakarta in the morning.

Jakarta Police spokesperson Argo Yuwono called on people to refrain from instantly trusting misinformation that circulated on the social media.

“What has been circulated in the social media give no benefit. You can cross check it with the police to find out whether the information is correct or not. People need to filter it first before using it as information,” Argo said.

Police said that the protesters were not residents of the city.

Five terrorist suspects have also been arrested in West Java regency of Garut on Tuesday. Police confiscated weapons from the suspects who rode a van to get to Jakarta.

Indonesian authorities have closed down train stations near the demonstration areas, and advising passengers to board trains from other stations.

Prabowo plans to file a lawsuit to the Constitutional Court regarding the election results and the counting done by General Elections Commission that puts incumbent President Joko Widodo as the winner of presidential election.

Widodo stressed yesterday that he would not tolerate anyone attempting to disrupt security and the ongoing process of democracy. He said that police and military will take stern action against rioters trying to create violence and anarchy.

Prabowo also urged supporters and security authorities to refrain from engaging in violence.

“Avoid physical assault, be polite and respect apparatus,” Prabowo said.

Carrier seeks compensation from Boeing

2019-05-22 浏览

China Eastern Airlines has filed a claim for compensation against Boeing after the grounding and delayed delivery of 737 MAX aircraft since March.

The airline said that grounding Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes had resulted in great losses for the company, and the losses are still expanding. The company declined to disclose details of a letter of claim, which was sent to Boeing.

The Shanghai-based airline has 14 Boeing 737 MAX jets in its fleet, including those from subsidiary Shanghai Airlines.

The aircraft have been mothballed according to aircraft maintenance standards

The company had not communicated with other carriers regarding compensation.

China became the first to halt the commercial operations of all Boeing 737 MAX 8 airplanes after a fatal Ethiopian Airlines plane crash on March 10. It was the second crash of the new aircraft after one operated by Indonesia’s Lion Air crashed in October last year, triggering global scrutiny and bans on operating Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

The US Federal Aviation Administration is hosting a meeting of global regulators in Dallas tomorrow to review software and training proposals from Boeing before deciding whether, and when, to end the two-month grounding.

May spells out new Brexit deal

2019-05-22 浏览

UK Prime Minister Theresa May set out yesterday a “new deal” for Britain’s departure from the European Union, offering sweeteners to opposition parties in her fourth attempt to break an impasse in parliament over Brexit.

Three years since Britain voted to leave the EU and almost two months after the planned departure date, May is mounting a last bid to try to get the deeply divided parliament’s backing for a divorce deal, to leave office with some kind of legacy.

The odds do not look good. Despite offering what she described as “significant further changes,” many lawmakers, hardened in their positions, have already decided not to vote next month for the Withdrawal Agreement Bill, legislation which implements the terms of Britain’s departure.

Speaking at the headquarters of PricewaterhouseCoopers, May appealed to lawmakers to get behind her deal, offering the prospect of a possible second referendum on the agreement and closer trading arrangements with the EU as incentives.

“I say with conviction to every MP or every party: I have compromised, now I ask you to compromise,” she said.

“We have been given a clear instruction by the people we are supposed to represent, so help me find a way to honor that instruction, move our country and our politics and build the better future that all of us want to see.”

By offering the possibility of holding a second vote on her deal and a compromise on customs arrangements, May hopes to win over opposition Labour lawmakers, whose votes she needs to overcome resistance to the deal in her own Conservative Party.

But she will infuriate Brexit-supporting lawmakers, who have described a customs union with the EU as no Brexit at all. Simon Clarke, a Conservative lawmaker, said he had backed her deal during the third failed attempt in parliament, “but this speech from the PM means there is no way I will support the Withdrawal Agreement Bill.”

DPRK's UN envoy denounces US seizure of cargo ship

2019-05-22 浏览

The permanent representative of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to the United Nations on Tuesday denounced the US seizure of a cargo ship of his country.

On May 9, the United States "committed an unlawful and outrageous act" of dispossessing DPRK's cargo ship Wise Honest by forcibly taking it to American Samoa under the pretext of unilateral sanctions and violation of US domestic law, Kim Song told reporters at the UN headquarters in New York.

The cargo ship was detained in Indonesian waters in April 2018. Its seizure was announced by the US Justice Department on May 9, 2019, for allegedly violating US and UN sanctions.

Kim said Tuesday that the unilateral sanctions and domestic law, which the United States has employed as legal grounds for the seizure, are "clearly illegality and injustice," because unilateral sanctions and extraterritorial application of national jurisdiction to a third country cannot be justified under international law.

The Wise Honest is a state-owned ship and a property of the DPRK, he said. "We regard it as a part of our territory where our sovereignty is fully exercised."

He noted that a spokesperson for the DPRK Foreign Ministry on May 14 demanded the immediate return of the ship and urged the US government to consider how its actions might impact future relations between the two countries.

Kim said he sent a letter last week to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres with regard to the seizure "in order to inform our principled position."
