Chinese premier meets US business delegation

2019-10-18 浏览

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met with a business delegation from the United States on Thursday, which was led by Chairman of the US-China Business Council Evan Greenberg.

Li said that as China and the United States are respectively the world's largest developing country and the largest developed country, the healthy and stable development of the Sino-US relations will benefit the two sides and the world.

Li called on the two sides to focus on coordination, cooperation and stability, take a long-term perspective and remain down-to-earth, and resolve relevant issues through dialogue and consultation on the basis of equality and mutual respect, so as to advance bilateral economic and trade ties on the right track.

Li expressed the hope that people of US industrial and commercial circles, including those from the USCBC, will continue to play a positive role in promoting the development of bilateral relations and enhancing mutual understanding between the two peoples, he said.

China's door of opening-up will not be closed, but will only open wider, Li said.

Enterprises from all countries, including the United States, are welcome to expand investment in and cooperation with China to achieve mutual benefit, said Li.

The US delegates said the US business community hopes to maintain contacts with China, does not want to see decoupling between the two countries, and also does not want to see trade wars or imposition of additional tariffs.

They expressed the hope that both sides will seize the opportunities and reach a substantive agreement through negotiations and consultations, so that enterprises from both countries can engage in healthy competition and achieve common development in a fair and determined environment.

Chinese VR movie screened at int'l film festival in ROK

2019-10-17 浏览

A Chinese virtual reality (VR) movie was selected to play in the VR Theater at the 24th Busan International Film Festival in the Republic of Korea (ROK).

The movie "Half-Hundred Mirrors," was the only VR movie from the Chinese mainland to be displayed during the event held earlier this month, along with 40 other films from 12 countries and regions.

Directed by Yu Hong, a professor with the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the movie features oil painting elements and tells the story of a group of children's lives from their birth to adulthood, reflecting the changes in society.

Researchers from Tianjin University adopted the 3D immersive VR technology into the movie.

Han Dong, an associate professor of the College of Intelligence and Computing at Tianjin University and the chief technical director of the movie, said his team spent half a year finishing the film. They adopted advanced technologies such as digital collecting, computer graphic modeling and human-computer interaction into the movie.

"My team is engaged in the research on digital museum display, and VR & AR interactive fields. VR film is another exploration in digital media art," Han said.

The computer system and sensor technology can create a three-dimensional environment. People's visual sense, auditory sense and tactile sense can be simulated in this environment so that people may immerse themselves in the virtual world.

When the audience puts on the VR headset, a 360-degree view will be presented.

EU members of Security Council regret Turkey's continued military operation in Syria

2019-10-17 浏览

The European Union members of the UN Security Council on Wednesday regretted Turkey's continued military operation in northeast Syria despite repeated calls for an end to Ankara's military adventure.

Belgium, Britain, France, Germany and Poland — the EU members of the Security Council — plus Estonia, the incoming EU member of the council, issued a joint statement after the Security Council held closed-door consultations on the situation in northeast Syria.

The statement recalled the conclusions of the EU foreign ministers' meeting on Monday, in which the EU and its member states condemned Turkey's unilateral military action in northeast Syria and urged Turkey to cease it.

"We deeply regret that Turkey has not responded yet to these repeated appeals from its allies," said the statement read out to reporters by Christoph Heusgen, the German UN ambassador, on behalf of the six countries.

"We do not believe Turkey's unilateral military action will resolve its underlying security concerns. Turkey's ongoing military action seriously undermines the stability and security of the whole region, resulting in more civilian suffering, displacement and the severe hindering of access to humanitarian assistance.

"It makes the prospects for the UN-led political process to achieve peace in Syria more difficult and opens new front lines that could further risk destabilizing the region," said the statement.

Turkey's military operation also significantly undermines the progress in the fight against the Islamic State, with the terrorist group remaining a threat to European and Turkish security as well as in the region and internationally, said the statement.

The secure detention of terrorist fighters is imperative in order to prevent them from joining the ranks of terrorist groups, it said.

The EU members call for a ministerial meeting of the Global Coalition Against Daesh in order to address the continuation of its efforts in the current context, said the statement. Daesh is the Arabic-language acronym of the IS.

The continued efforts of the international community, including those at the UN Security Council, in order to stop Turkey's unilateral military action, are urgently needed, said the statement.

The six EU countries repeated their urgent call on Turkey to act in accordance with international humanitarian law.

They said Turkey is a key partner of the European Union, a NATO ally and a critically important actor in the Syrian crisis and in the region, adding that they recognize Turkey's important role as a host country of Syrian refugees.

The six EU countries reiterated their commitment to the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, and stressed again that the EU will not provide stabilization or development assistance in areas where the rights of local populations are ignored or violated.

The EU maintains its position that the return of refugees and internally displaced people to their places of origin must be safe, voluntary and dignified, in line with international humanitarian law and the principles of the UN refugee agency.

Wednesday's Security Council meeting was requested by the five EU members.

The council members expressed deep concern over the risk of the spreading of terrorists and the further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Syria, but they stopped short of calling for an end to Turkey's military action.

African-American boy finds fun, future in Chinese culture

2019-10-17 浏览

Ten-year-old Khaya Njumbe has been studying Chinese for years, so that when he speaks to the Chinese people in their language, he can go to their hearts.

Citing Nelson Mandela, South Africa's former president, Khaya told Xinhua, "if you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. But if you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart."

Earlier this year, Khaya won the top prize in the children's group of a singing contest of Chinese songs in the U.S. Midwest. He was singing two Chinese songs, "When You Are Old" and "The Moon Represents My Heart," after practicing for only two weeks.

Khaya's obsession with the Chinese language started from a TV program teaching basic Chinese when he was two years old. Since then, Khaya has been learning Chinese from YouTube, TV programs and books. "I wanted to learn the most, learn as much as I could while at home."

Khaya's mother, Belinda, still remembers the "Little Bunny," a Chinese lullaby that Khaya sang to her when he was three years old. "He learned it from a TV song contest."

Other pleasant surprises for her were that Khaya also learned to recite Tang-dynasty poems and try Chinese tongue twisters.

Born in Chicago, Khaya lives with his parents in the small town of Lansing in the southernmost of Illinois.

In their house, a big red Chinese knot hangs in the middle of a wall, with two wooden pendants engraved with "Auspiciousness" and "Happiness" in the Chinese language. There are also some flashcards with Chinese characters on the coffee table and a Chinese dictionary on the bookstand.

When Khaya's parents migrated to America from Africa more than 20 years ago, they knew nothing about China except for the Chinese food. They sent him to a Chinese class in Chinatown when he was eight, but one month later Khaya complained that the Mandarin classes were too basic for his level and that the teachers mostly spoke Cantonese.

At Khaya's request, they switched him to Xilin Chinese School, a non-profit Chinese culture center in Naperville in the western suburbs of Chicago.

Now it has been more than two years since Khaya started taking Chinese, mathematics, calligraphy and singing classes at Xilin from 10am to 5pm every Saturday.

Khaya said he never felt tired of the whole-day study. "I am just very busy. I really like it, so it feels like it's very short."

Referring to the family's friendship with local Chinese households, Khaya's father, David, said, "I have a Chinese extended family right here."

When asked about his dreams, Khaya said he would like to do biomedical engineering in China.

"I think there will be a lot of business opportunities in the future when I finish school," he said.

And Belinda told him to pick one thing, stick to it and be good at it. She said, jokingly, "My Chinese friends call me a tiger mom."

An electrical engineer himself, David offered his full support. "At this point, he is absorbing everything. So I let him go for it, and our support is all he needs."

Noting that China is one of the major economic powers in the world, David hoped that mastering the Chinese language would give Khaya a big advantage to do business in China in the future.

"China is investing a lot in Africa, where he has relatives. He can help them understand China," he said.

Turkey rejects US proposal for cease-fire with Kurdish forces in Syria

2019-10-16 浏览

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on late Tuesday rejected the offer of his US counterpart Donald Trump for a cease-fire with the Syrian Kurdish fighters, but agreed to keep in dialogue with Washington.

Speaking to journalists on his way from Baku to Ankara, Erdogan said in a phone conversation with Trump, Trump proposed to mediate for a cease-fire between Turkey and the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in Syria and decided to send a delegation to Ankara for this bid.

The delegation, led by US Vice President Mike Pence, will arrive in Turkey on Wednesday, Erdogan said, adding that he will not accept a cease-fire with the YPG first.

"I told President Trump that we would not declare a cease-fire first before discussing other issues ... we will make a deal first, then we will talk about the truce," Turkish broadcaster NTV quoted Erdogan as saying.

Turkish armed forces are making an effort to clear northern Syria of "terror organizations" and Turkey cannot declare a cease-fire before the YPG, which Ankara sees as the Syrian branch of outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), was eliminated from its borders, said Erdogan.

With regard to the US sanctions announced on Monday, the Turkish president noted that the United States is exerting pressure on Ankara as the YPG is rapidly losing its position after Turkey launched Operation Peace Spring in northern Syria.

"We have no worries about any sanctions," he stressed.

Concerning the Russian declaration that the Syrian government forces have fully controlled the Syrian town of Manbij that the Turkish army is advancing towards, Erdogan said "it is not a problem."

"In the end, it is their (Syrian) land," said Erdogan, stressing that however, it is important for Turkey to eliminate the presence of the YPG in the town.

On October 9, Turkey started the military campaign in northern Syria in an attempt to clear the YPG from the area. The Turkish operation also aims to create a safe zone in northern Syria to resettle millions of Syrian refugees hosted by Turkey.

The campaign came after the withdrawal of the US forces from northern Syria, which was seen as a sign of abandoning the Kurdish forces that are considered as Washington's allies in fighting the Islamic State militants in Syria.

A deal, however, has recently been reached between the Kurdish forces and Damascus, which led to the Syrian army's entry to Kurdish-held areas, including Manbij town, to protect them against the Turkish assault.

Meanwhile, the US on Monday rolled out a package of sanctions on Turkey over its ongoing military operation in Syria.

China condemns US House approval of bill on Hong Kong: spokesperson

2019-10-16 浏览

A spokesperson for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council on Wednesday made serious protest to and strongly condemned the passing of the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 by the US House of Representatives.

The US House of Representatives passed the act, proposed by some congressmen, on Tuesday local time despite strong opposition from the Chinese government.

get the US nowhere

The Office of the Commissioner of the Chinese foreign ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region expressed strong indignation over some US politicians' actions of passing Hong Kong-related bills at the US House, warning that playing Hong Kong as a card will get the United States nowhere.

Some US politicians have kept bent on passing Hong Kong-related bills including the so-called "Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019," ignoring the facts and confounding right with wrong. By doing so, they have openly endorsed anti-China troublemakers in Hong Kong, tested the red line of the "one country, two systems" principle, grossly interfered with Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs as a whole, and trampled upon international law and basic norms governing international relations, the commissioner's office said in a statement.

"We express strong indignation over and condemn such actions, which have again exposed the politicians' gangster logic and hegemonic mindset," it said.

Namaste, Chinese tourists are flocking to India

2019-10-16 浏览

The number of visits made by Chinese to India registered robust growth during the first three quarters of this year, making India a trendy destination for Chinese tourists, according to a report published by China’s online travel agency Ctrip.

Data from Ctrip showed that the number of visits made by Chinese to India surged by over 70 percent during the January-September period, with over 60 percent of the travelers in their 30s or 40s.

Compared with other traditional overseas travel destinations, India remained a niche for most Chinese, a Ctrip product manager said, adding that as Chinese people learn more about India, reservations for package tours have seen an increase of over 40 percent.

Indian tourism products continued to increase, as tour operators rolled out diversified traveling routes and products, allowing travelers to make Buddhist pilgrimages, celebrate the Hindu spring festival and visit shooting locations of Chinese movies.

According to the Embassy of India in Beijing, electronic visa policies for Chinese citizens were relaxed from this month, including lower visa fees and extended validity. The new policies will benefit hundreds of thousands of people, further stimulating Chinese travelers’ enthusiasm to visit India.

Under the new policy, Chinese citizens only need to pay US$80 for a multiple-entry electronic visa valid for five years and US$25 for a single-entry visa valid for 30 days.

In the first three quarters, Chinese travelers spent an average of 649 yuan (US$91.80) on visas to India.

China establishes DNA database to help identify dead soldiers

2019-10-15 浏览

Chinese researchers have established a DNA database of Chinese volunteer soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War and their relatives, providing reliable technical and data support to help more families find their missing kin.

The military medical research institute under the Academy of Military Sciences of the Chinese People's Liberation Army started building the database in 2015 and completed DNA analysis of 494 remains this year.

The research team has invented a fast and efficient method to obtain useful DNA data from skeletal remains, which were degraded severely after decades of contamination by soil microorganisms.

According to lead researcher Wang Shengqi, since some of the soldiers died at a young age and had no children, and few of their parents or siblings are still alive, confirming remains proved difficult and required DNA data from distant relatives.

With the support of many domestic institutes and experts, the research team updated the sequencing technologies that can detect more genes simultaneously in order to overcome the challenges in identification, Wang said.

The research team has long been engaged in studying gene detection technologies and applications. It has contributed to the laboratory confirmation of China's first case of influenza A and developed China's first nucleic acid detection kit to help prevent and control the Ebola epidemic in African countries.
