Trump to meet Netanyahu to discuss 21-point Gaza ceasefire plan
特朗普将会见内塔尼亚胡,讨论加沙21点停火计划
US President Donald Trump will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York on Monday to discuss Trump's 21-point peace plan. Saudi state-owned news service Al Arabiya, citing a copy of the plan it has obtained, said the framework calls for an immediate halt to hostilities, the release of all hostages held by Hamas, the release of thousands of Palestinians in Israeli prisons, unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid by international organizations, and the surrender of Hamas weapons to an Arab force. It makes no mention of withdrawal of Israel troops.
The plan, according to the Saudi report, also calls for Hamas members to be pardoned if they agree to disarm and leave Gaza. It would set up a temporary administration in Gaza overseen by an international and Arab security force. Reconstruction of the war-torn territory would be undertaken over five years. In turn, the US would guarantee that Israel annexes no property in the occupied West Bank and Israel would commit to negotiations on a final peace settlement. Separately, the military wing of Hamas said on Sunday it has lost contact with two Israeli hostages held in Gaza City, target of a major Israeli ground offensive. It urged Israel to pull back troops and suspend air strike so the captives can be located. |

US tariffs on pharmaceutical imports not seen as a threat to Chinese biotech
美国对医药进口的关税被认为不会威胁中国生物科技业
The new 100 percent US tariffs on imported pharmaceutical brands will "barely dent" the operations of Chinese drug makers, the South China Morning Post reported, citing a report from US investment bank Jeffries. Most Chinese biotech companies, the report said, are involved in pre-marking development and many have licensing agreements with US partners immune from the tariffs because they have production facilities in America. They don't export brand drugs to the US.
Chinese drug makers, too, have been downplaying the effects of the tariffs. Hangzhou-based Yifan Pharmaceuticals said its drug Ryzneuta, used in mitigating the effects of chemotherapy, is made by US companies, and Zhejiang Province-based Huahai Pharmaceutical said it has production capacity of 7 billion tablets in a North Carolina facility. |

Chinese pioneer of ‘sponge city’ dies in Brazilian plane crash
中国“海绵城市”先驱在巴西空难中遇难
Yu Kongjian, 62, the Chinese mastermind behind the “sponge city” concept widely adopted in China’s urban planning, died in the crash of a small plane in Brazil. The accident also killed the pilot and two Brazilian documentary makers filming wetlands. Yu, a landscape architect and ecologist, pioneered the idea that creating spaces to hold water in city centers allows extreme rainfall to be absorbed, preventing flooding. Yu was born in Zhejiang Province and earned a PhD from Harvard. He was professor at Peking University. In recent years, he has taken his concept to projects in countries that include Saudi Arabia and Thailand. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said of Yu, “In these times of climate change, he became a global reference with his sponge cities, which unite quality of life and environmental protection.”

Macron warns Trump on repercussions of Israeli annexations in West Bank
马克龙警告特朗普:以色列吞并西岸将引发严重后果
French President Emmanuel Macron, in the US for the convening of the UN General Assembly, said he told US President Trump that any attempt by Israel to annex parts of the West Bank would end Arab-Israeli diplomatic normalization and should be a red line for the US. He also said he presented Trump with a plan for the future of a Palestinian state endorsed by 143 UN members. It would exclude Hamas from any future role in Gaza and the West Bank.
Meanwhile, Israeli newspapers reported that the White House is backing a postwar plan that would see former UK Labor prime minister Tony Blair head a temporary transitional administration for Gaza and envisions an eventual Arab multinational peacekeeping force. Under the plan, Palestinians would not be forced to leave the enclave. |

US starts probe on imports of robotics, machinery and medical devices
美国对进口机器人、机械及医疗设备展开调查
The US Commerce Department said it is initiating national security probe into imports of robotics, industrial machinery and medical devices in a step that could result in new tariffs. The investigation could involve surgical masks, medical syringes, wheelchairs, pacemakers and medical diagnostic equipment. China is a major supplier of robots and Europe a leading medical-equipment supplier. The new probe was announced under the same trade act that led to specific tariffs earlier imposed on automobiles, copper, steel and aluminum. Separate investigations into imports of chips and pharmaceuticals are ongoing.

China pledges up to 10 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
中国承诺减少最多10%的温室气体排放
Chinese President Xi Jinping, speaking on a video link to a climate summit hosted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said China plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions between 7-10 percent from peak levels by 2035 and rebuked countries that are moving in the opposite direction. He said his nation will increase installed capacity of wind and solar power sixfold from 2020 levels, elevating the share of non-fossil fuels in the nation's domestic energy use to over 30 percent. "The green and low-carbon transition is the trend of the times," Xi said, a day after US President Donald Trump told the UN General Assembly that climate change is the "greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world."
Meanwhile, The US Department of Energy said it will cancel more than US$13 billion in funds earmarked by the previous Biden administration for wind and solar power and electric vehicles. |

中国放弃在世贸组织的发展中国家特殊待遇
In a sign of its emergence as a world economic power, China will forego the benefits of developing-country status in future World Trade Organization agreements, Chinese Premier Li Qiang announced while attending the UN General Assembly meeting in New York. Developing-country status gives nations an advantage in issues such as using tariffs and subsidies to protect nascent industries. Vice Minister of Commerce Li Chenggang explained that the decision is a show of support for the multilateral trading system, which he said is facing severe challenges from protectionism and unilateralism.

Trump shifts narrative on Ukraine war, rebukes the UN for ineffectiveness
特朗普转变对乌战立场 批评联合国效率低下
US President Donald Trump, ever shifting his narrative on Russia, said on Tuesday for the first time that Ukraine is in a position to win back all the territory Russia has seized since it began the war against Ukraine. In the past, Trump has appeared to suggest Ukraine would have to cede territory in any peace plan. His comments came after meeting Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
In a defiant one-hour speech before the General Assembly, Trump castigated the UN for failing to live up to its mission and applauded his own role as a peacemaker. "What is the purpose of the United Nations?" he asked the assembly. He also said Europe is "going to hell" because of an invasion of illegal immigrants and denounced climate change as "the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world." |
