Mainland experts in Hong Kong to fight virus

大陆派专家前往香港抗击疫情

2020-08-03 浏览

Seven virus testing professionals from the Chinese mainland arrived in Hong Kong on Sunday as the first batch of mainland supportive teams to help tackle a worsening spread of COVID-19.

The medical professionals, who will help with laboratory work, are members of a 60-strong nucleic acid testing team established recently at the request of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government for assistance in the battle against the epidemic.

Members of the team were selected from over 20 public hospitals in Guangdong Province. The head of the team used to lead the province’s supportive group in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province.

Guo Penghao, leader of the advance team, said they will start working with relevant departments and familiarizing themselves with testing facilities and procedures in preparation for the following large-scale nucleic acid testing.

The virus testing team and Hong Kong residents will win the battle against COVID-19, Guo said. “We are full of confidence.”

The National Health Commission promised continued efforts to mobilize medical resources from the mainland and send more support at any time based on the requirements of the HKSAR to combat COVID-19.

They came at a time of surging COVID-19 infections in Hong Kong, where medical resources were stretched to the limit and the virus testing capacity was not enough.

Hong Kong’s Center for Health Protection reported 115 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, the 12th consecutive day of more than 100 cases.

All of the newly reported cases are local infections, bringing Hong Kong’s total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 3,511.

Among the 115 cases, 79 cases are related to previously confirmed cases, while the sources of other 36 cases remained unknown, said Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the CHP’s Communicable Disease Branch.

As of 9am on Sunday, 1,107 confirmed patients are hospitalized, including 34 in critical condition and 71 in serious condition. The number of deaths from COVID-19 rose to 34.

Hong Kong has introduced a raft of measures including restricting gatherings to two people and mandating face masks in all outdoor public spaces. Chief executive Carrie Lam on Friday announced the postponement of the 2020 Legislative Council General Election by one year due to the current outbreak.

California, the hardest-hit state by COVID-19 in the United States, witnessed a surge of 9,032 newly-confirmed cases as of Saturday, the California Department of Public Health said Sunday.

With a population of around 40 million, the country's most populous state saw its confirmed cases pile up to a total number of over half a million, or 509,162, to date, the department said in a daily report.

Over the past 24-hour reporting period, 132 new COVID-19 deaths were recorded, bringing the state's fatalities to 9,356. With an increase of 149,388, there have been 8,035,975 tests conducted in California so far.

"As testing capacity continues to increase across the state, an increase in the number of positive cases has been expected -- increasing the importance of positivity rates to find signs of community spread," the authorities said in the report.

The 7-day average number of new cases is 7,929 per day. The 7-day average from the week prior was 9,852.

The number of confirmed cases in California surpassed New York State last week as the largest count in the United States.

Celebrating the poetic inspiration of Jiangnan

庆祝江南的诗意灵感

2020-07-31 浏览

Jiangnan, or regions south of the Yangtze River, has provided Chinese artists with poetic inspiration for centuries. And it’s no different for modern artists today, who continue to seek catharsis and motivation from the Chinese river’s enchanting stretches. An exhibition “Encountering Jiangnan Again,” highlighting this love, is underway at Suzhou Art Museum through August 12. It features a group of artists whose works try to reflect the essence of Jiangnan through their own interpretations. “The exhibition was originally planned to be held early this spring. However, due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, it was postponed until now,” said Zhang Lixing, the curator of the exhibition.Zhang has curated a series of exhibitions under the theme of Jiangnan in Suzhou, known for its canals, bridges, pagodas and classical gardens, as well as a rich cultural heritage in China that spans thousands of years.“When mentioning Jiangnan, some immediately relate it to the regions’ springtime as the days are getting warmer and things along both banks of the river come to life. Each rain is a welcome sight, accompanied by the fragrance and the gentle rustle of the plants,” said Zhang. “But this is no longer the case, as many participating artists live and work in Shanghai.” For artist Li Yirong, Jiangnan is no longer the stereotyped image of a tranquil watertown.“Some used to associate Jiangnan with a feeling of melancholy, as this time of year is classically considered to be wet and fleeting,” Li said. “For me, it means a blossoming scene with brilliant flowers. I always remember the early blooms of sakura in the springtime of Jiangnan. After their beauty peaks around two weeks, the blossoms start to fall, and I want to ‘freeze’ them onto my canvas.”Date: Through August 12 (closed on Mondays), 9am-4pmVenue: Suzhou Art MuseumAddress: 2075 Renmin Road, Suzhou City

Brazil reopens to foreigners despite virus crisis

巴西向外国人开放国际航班

2020-07-30 浏览

Brazil reopened on Wednesday to foreign visitors arriving by plane, hoping to revive its lockdown-devastated tourism industry despite the rapid spread of the new coronavirus in the country.

In a decree published in the government gazette, Brazil extended coronavirus-related bans on foreign travelers arriving by land or sea for another 30 days, but said the four-month-old restrictions "will no longer bar the entry of foreigners arriving by air."

The move came even as Brazil registered record numbers of daily infections and deaths, bringing the overall figures past 2.5 million and 90,000, respectively.

Brazil closed its air borders to non-residents on March 30, at a time when the virus was ravaging Europe and Asia and just taking hold in South America.

Now, Brazil is the country with the second-highest number of infections and deaths in the world, after the United States.

The tourism industry has already lost nearly 122 billion reals (US$23.6 billion) because of the pandemic, the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC) estimates.

As a whole, Latin America's biggest economy is facing a record contraction of 9.1 percent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Under the measure, Brazil will require foreign visitors staying for 90 days or less to have health insurance covering them in the country before they travel.

Brazil for its part is among the countries whose nationals still face bans on entering the European Union or the United States under novel coronavirus restrictions.

Nepal opens Mt. Qomolangma after nearly 5 months of shutdown

尼泊尔重开珠穆朗玛

2020-07-30 浏览

Nepal has opened Mt. Qomolangma and other Himalayan peaks from Thursday after a shutdown that had lasted for four and a half months, according to a tourism department official.

All spring season expeditions that usually last from March to May were suspended following fears of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country. The Nepali government halted the issuance of climbing permits for expeditions and canceled already issued permits for the spring season 2020 on March 13.

"The mountains are now open for mountaineers and the department has started issuing climbing permits starting today (Thursday)," said Mira Acharya, director at the Department of Tourism.

The country has opened 414 peaks for mountaineering purposes. In line with the relaxation on economic activities, the government has allowed hotels, restaurants, trekking and mountaineering services to resume operations from Thursday.

Nepal bags more than US$4 million as royalty from climbers annually. The DoT collects US$5,500 as climbing permit fee for Mt. Qomolangma's normal route and US$5,000 for the other route from foreigners during autumn.

The disruption of mountaineering is likely to hamper the country's economy. As the country is gearing up to resume international flights, it is expecting tourists for the autumn season.

"The quarantine modality is still under discussion because of which we are unable to project the flow of climbers into the country," Acharya told Xinhua on Thursday.
