China-Canada Trade Deal Sparks Trump Tariff Threat

中加贸易协议引发特朗普关税威胁

2026-01-26 浏览

US President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff on all imports from Canada if Ottawa proceeds with a new trade deal with China that includes a reduction of duties on electric cars. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by urging residents to "buy Canadian" amid a "threat from abroad." Carney got on Trump's wrong side – again – last week in a speech he gave at the Davos forum declaring the old world order irrevocably broken and urging mid-sized nations like Canada to band together to avoid being gobbled up by aggressive big powers. In turn, Trump rescinded his invitation to Canada to join his new "Board of Peace," though it wasn't clear that Carney had any intention of joining. The Canadian leader recently returned from a trip to China that strengthened bilateral trade ties.

Xiaomi Is China's First 'Tesla Killer'

小米成为中国首个“特斯拉杀手”

2026-01-26 浏览

China has finally produced a domestic "Tesla killer," the South China Morning Post reported. Beijing-based electric carmaker Xiaomi sold 258,164 of its SU7 model last year, compared with Tesla's mainland deliveries of 200,361 Tesla Model 3s, according to the China Passenger Car Association. The Model 3, which is about 9 percent more expensive than the SU7, is assembled at the Tesla superfactory in Shanghai. Tesla is also facing competition from other domestic carmakers, like Nio and Xpeng, that are rolling out cheaper-priced models aimed at Tesla. Xiaomi unveiled an updated version of the SU7 this month, expected to hit the market soon. The company, which started as a phone and consumer electronics firm, moved into car-making in 2024.

'Board of Peace' or UN Usurper?

“和平理事会”还是联合国的篡权者?

2026-01-23 浏览

US President Donald Trump and leaders from 20 countries officially signed the charter creating Trump's "Board of Peace," which was originally aimed at overseeing reconstruction of Gaza but has since morphed into an international organization pledged to resolve global conflicts. The charter makes no reference to Gaza. Trump reportedly invited 60 nations to become members of the board, offering them three-year terms or permanent seats if they pay US$1 billion. Of the 20 or so countries agreeing so far to serve on the board, only four rank among the 20 most populated nations and only five are among the 20 biggest global economies. Among the board members are Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, Israel, Indonesia and Pakistan. Among the noticeable no-shows are China, India, Japan, the UK, France, Brazil, Canada and Australia. Russia has said it is considering joining.

Critics of the board said it's a Trump vanity project aimed at sidelining the UN. The Guardian newspaper said it resembles "an imperial court." The executive board of the group, to be chaired by Trump, includes US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, US envoy Steve Witkoff, son-in-law Jared Kushner and former UK prime minister Tony Blair. Trump, Witkoff and Kushner are property developers. Kushner on Thursday unveiled a US$30 billion blueprint for reconstruction of Gaza that includes residential towers, data centers and seaside resorts.

Trump Makes Stunning Retreat on Greenland

特朗普在格陵兰问题上出人意料地退让

2026-01-22 浏览

US President Donald Trump defused the crisis he created over Greenland in a surprise announcement that he and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte reached a framework agreement related to the future of the Arctic island. He also withdrew punitive tariffs due to be imposed on eight European countries and dropped threats to use force to acquire the island that is under Danish control. His announcement came hours after a belligerent speech at the World Economic Forum summit in Davos, Switzerland. Trump later told CNBC that the framework deal involves including Greenland in the US Golden Dome missile defense system and giving the US minerals rights on the island, which has the world's eighth-largest reserves of rare earth elements vital in industrial production. Asked how long the deal will last, Trump said "forever."

A NATO spokesman said the deal is aimed at "ensuring that Russia and China never gain a foothold – economically or militarily – in Greenland." The agreement comes after major European allies, in a rare, sharp rebuff to Washington, mounted a wall of opposition to Trump's earlier rhetoric about a takeover of Greenland by any means necessary. The dramatic climbdown triggered a relief rally on Wall Street, with the S&P 500 index chalking up a 1.2 percent gain after heavy losses a day earlier.

'If We're Not at Table, We're on the Menu'

“如果我们不上桌,就会成为菜单上的一部分”

2026-01-22 浏览

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, fresh from a visit to China, told the World Economic Forum in Davos that the "old order is not coming back" and smaller economies like Canada that sit outside the big power axis need to act together to prevent becoming the victims of power plays. "We need to act together because if we're not at the table, we're on the menu," he said. "The world is in the midst of a rupture, not a transition." He didn't mention US President Donald Trump by name in his address. Trump, who has said on occasion that Canada should become America's 51st state, responded to Carney's speech by saying, "Canada lives because of the US. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make statements."

Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang plans a trip to China later this month, apparently to try to smooth the path for use of his company's H200 chips by mainland AI companies, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday. His last visit was in July, when he was drumming up business for the less advanced H20 chip. In both cases, the visits follow US approval for export of the Nvidia chips to China. Beijing has not said whether the H200 chips will be welcome as the nation strives to become self-reliant in semiconductors and end reliance on foreign suppliers

China Pledges Efforts to Pare Trade Surpluses

中国承诺努力缩减贸易顺差

2026-01-21 浏览

Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, in an address to the World Economic Forum's annual Davos meeting in Switzerland, praised the resilience of the nation's economy in face of global headwinds and said the domestic market will be opened further to correct trade imbalances with other countries. China ran a record US$1.2 trillion trade surplus last year, but He said the country is a "partner, not a rival" in trade. Warning against global protectionism, he said, "The world must not return to the law of the jungle where the strong prey on the weak," he said. "China's development presents an opportunity, not a threat to the world economy." His speech came just days after China announced it had achieved its 2025 growth target of 5 percent.
