China urges US to cease all meddling in Hong Kong affairs

中国催促美国停止干涉香港事务

2021-03-02 浏览

China on Monday urged the United States to cease interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China’s internal affairs in any form.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin made the remarks after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently called for the immediate release of the pan-democratic candidates in Hong Kong.

“It is a justifiable law-enforcement action of the Hong Kong police to arrest and prosecute in accordance with the law criminal suspects allegedly involved in crimes of subverting state power in violation of the legislation on safeguarding national security in Hong Kong,” Wang said in response.

“Would the United States allow other countries to make irresponsible remarks over normal law enforcement activities in its own country?” he asked.

China is a country with the rule of law and Hong Kong is a place of law and order where nobody is above the law. “We firmly support the Hong Kong police in performing their duties according to the law and safeguarding national security as well as security and stability in Hong Kong,” he added.

He urged the US side to stop meddling in China’s and Hong Kong’s internal affairs.

The Trumps vaccinated before leaving White House: adviser

知情者透露特朗普夫妇离开白宫前注射了新冠疫苗

Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, were vaccinated against the coronavirus in January before leaving the White House, an adviser to the former president said on Monday.

"President Trump and the first lady were vaccinated at the White House in January," the adviser said without providing any further details.

Joe Biden, who took over as president on January 20, was vaccinated publicly against the coronavirus on December 21 but the Trumps' vaccinations had not been revealed previously.

Trump, in a speech on Sunday, his first since leaving the White House, said everyone should get vaccinated against COVID-19, which has left more than 500,000 people dead in the United States.

Some of Trump's supporters have expressed skepticism about being vaccinated.

Trump came down with COVID-19 in early October and was hospitalized for several days in a suburb of Washington.

47 to stand trial under security law in HK

47人因违反香港治安法被起诉

2021-03-01 浏览

Hong Kong police prosecuted 47 people, who were arrested in January, for “conspiring to subvert state power.”

The defendants, 39 men and eight women aged between 23 and 64, will stand trial in West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts today.

The police arrested 53 people last month on suspicion of “subverting state power” under the national security law in Hong Kong for organizing and participating in the so-called “primary election” last year aimed at selecting candidates for a legislative council election. Authorities said that their participation was part of a plan to paralyze the city’s legislature and subvert state power.

Those arrested included anti-China disrupter Benny Tai, former opposition lawmakers Wu Chi-wai, Lam Cheuk-ting, James To and Alvin Yeung.

Joshua Wong was among those charged. Police informed him in his prison cell, where he is currently serving a sentence for organizing protests in 2019.

Local political group “Power for Democracy,” which organized the illegal primary, announced on Saturday it was ceasing operations and disbanding the organization. It also vowed to serve the city under the Basic Law and the national security law for Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong police said 99 individuals have been arrested for suspected violations of the security law so far. The law criminalizes acts of subversion, secession, terrorism and collusion with foreign powers to intervene in Hong Kong’s affairs. Serious offenders could face a maximum punishment of life imprisonment.

Some of the arrested, including media mogul Jimmy Lai, have been denied bail despite protracted legal appeals.

“Being formally charged also means that their political careers are over,” Tang Fei, a member of the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macau Studies, told the Global Times.

It will also lead to some seats being vacated in the upcoming district council and LegCo elections, as central and local authorities mull electoral reforms with the aim of ensuring the fundamental principle of patriots governing Hong Kong.

A two-day symposium is being held in the southern city of Shenzhen to solicit opinions on improving the special administrative region’s electoral system and upholding “patriots governing Hong Kong.”

China unveils guidelines on developing comprehensive transport network

中国发布综合交通运输网指导纲要

2021-02-25 浏览

China has unveiled plans to build the country’s strength in the transport sector over the next 15 years, setting long-term goals for the industry, with the aim of developing a modern, high-quality and comprehensive national transport network.

By 2035, the country’s transport network should be convenient, cost-effective, green, intelligent and safe, according to the guidelines jointly released by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council.

The transport network should feature higher domestic and international connectivity, multi-channel access to major cities, and effective coverage of county-level nodes, the guidelines said.

China should be at the global forefront in terms of the quality, intelligence and green levels of transport infrastructure, they said.

By the middle of the century, a modern, high-quality and comprehensive national transport network will be built in an all-round way, with a world-class transport infrastructure system, according to the guidelines.

Amid efforts to optimize the country’s comprehensive transport layout, the total scale of the national comprehensive transport network will reach about 700,000km by 2035, excluding the mileage of overseas sections of international land passages, air and sea routes and postal routes.

Among them, there will be about 200,000km of railways, 460,000km of highways and 25,000km of high-grade waterways, with 27 major coastal ports, 36 major inland ports, about 400 civil-transport airports and about 80 postal express-delivery hubs.

China will work to build a national comprehensive transport-hub system that consists of integrated transport-hub clusters, hub cities and hub ports, the guidelines said, stressing faster construction of about 20 international comprehensive transport-hub cities and about 80 national ones.

Calling for further integrated development of transportation with other industries, the guidelines also stressed efforts to empower transport infrastructure with new technologies and coordinate the development of intelligent connected vehicles and smart cities.

Ghana is first to receive vaccines under COVAX

新冠肺炎疫苗实施计划下,加纳首次收到疫苗

Ghana has become the first country in the world to receive vaccines acquired through the United Nations-backed COVAX initiative with the delivery on Wednesday of 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine made by the Serum Institute of India.

The vaccines, delivered by UNICEF, arrived at Accra’s Kotoka International Airport early Wednesday and are part of the first wave of COVID-19 vaccines that COVAX is sending to several low- and middle-income countries. Ghana is among 92 countries that have signed onto the COVAX program, according to a statement by Ghana’s acting Minister of Information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.

The west African nation of 30 million has recorded 81,245 cases and 584 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, according to figures from Ghana’s Health Services.

Ghana’s vaccination campaign will begin on March 2 and will be conducted in phases among prioritized groups, beginning with health workers, adults of 60 years and over, people with underlying health conditions, front-line executive, legislature, judiciary, and their related staff, said Nkrumah.

“The government of Ghana remains resolute at ensuring the welfare of all Ghanaians and is making frantic efforts to acquire adequate vaccines to cover the entire population through bilateral and multi-lateral agencies,” he said.

In a joint statement, the country representatives of UNICEF and WHO described the arrival of the COVAX vaccines as a “momentous occasion” critical to bringing the pandemic to an end. The COVAX shipment to Ghana is the start of what will be the world’s largest vaccine procurement and supply operation in history. COVAX plans to deliver close to 2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines around the world this year.
