BYD Dethrones Tesla as Top World Electric Carmaker

比亚迪取代特斯拉,成为全球最大的电动车制造商

2026-01-04 浏览

Chinese auto giant BYD toppled Tesla as the world's biggest seller of electric cars in 2025. The milestone is an ironic twist for Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk, who famously ridiculed BYD vehicles in a 2011 interview. Shenzhen-based BYD said sales of its battery-powered cars rose 28 percent last year to 2.3 million. US-based Tesla reported annual sales fell 9 percent to 1.6 million. BYD shares in Hong Kong rose 3.6 percent; Tesla shares in New York dropped 2.6 percent. In another milestone for the green vehicle industry, Norway reported that 96 percent of all new cars sold in the country last year were electric.

BYD was founded by chemist and entrepreneur Wang Chuanfu in 1995 as a battery maker. The company went public in 2002 and a year later, created the auto unit. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway took a nearly 10 percent stake in the company in 2008, but has since sold it for a reported return of nearly 4,000 percent. BYD also has interests in electronic devices, semiconductors, energy storage and monorails.

US 'Locked and Loaded' to Defend Iran Protesters

美国表示“已严阵以待”,将支持伊朗抗议者

2026-01-04 浏览

President Donald Trump warned Iran that the US will "come to the rescue" if government forces kill peaceful protesters in a current wave of street demonstrations triggered by a deteriorating economy. "We are locked and loaded and ready to go," Trump said on his social media site. Despite the warning, Iranian security forces opened fire on protesters on Friday night. At least eight people reportedly have been killed since protests began in cities across the country nearly a week ago. A senior adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Trump should "be careful" because intervention would spark potential chaos across the Middle East. The public unrest comes amid an inflation rate of 42 percent and a halving of the value of the nation's currency.

中国电影在银幕上大放异彩

2026-01-04 浏览

China's movie industry stamped its importance as both global filmmaker and box-office money spinner in 2025. Annual ticket sales surged 22 percent from a year earlier to about 51.8 billion yuan (US$7.4 billion), accounting for nearly a quarter of the global box office. Animation films accounted for nearly half of ticket sales in China, with domestically produced "Ne Zha 2," the big hit of the year. Among foreign successes, Disney's "Zootopia 2" hit a record as the highest-grossing imported animated film, with China ticket sales accounting for 40 percent global receipts. Beyond animation, other box office hits last year were China-made "Dead to Rights" and "Evil Unbound," Momentum has carried into the new year. As of January 2, box office takings for the New Year holiday period exceeded 500 million yuan.

China-Founded AI Startup to Be Acquired by Meta

中国 AI 初创公司将被 Meta 收购

2025-12-31 浏览

US technology giant Meta, which operates platforms like Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, and has been on an AI spending spree this year, said it will acquire AI startup Manus, which was founded in 2022 in Beijing but has since relocated to Singapore. No financial details were disclosed, but the Wall Street Journal reported the deal is valued at over US$2 billion, ranking among Meta's larger AI-related acquisitions. The company, once hailed as China's next DeepSeek, gained attention earlier this year with the release of what it claimed was the world's first general AI agent capable of making decisions and executing tasks autonomously, requiring much less prompting than other chatbots. Meta said it will operate and sell the Manus service, and integrate it into its consumer and business products.

Manus began as a product of Beijing-based startup Butterfly Effect before evolving into a separate entity. Earlier this year, the company raised US$75 million in a fundraising backed by venture capital firm Benchmark, China tech giant Tencent and private equity firm HongShan Capital.

Manus said the Metal deal validates its pioneering work with general AI agents, helping users tackle research, automation and complex tasks. "Joining Meta allows us to build on a stronger, more sustainable foundation without changing how Manus works or how decisions are made," said Manus Chief Executive Xiao Hong.

Israel Bans Aid Organizations, Citing Technicality

以色列以技术性理由禁止援助组织

2025-12-31 浏览

Israel announced a ban on dozens of aid organizations working in Gaza, including high-profile groups such as Doctors Without Borders, the International Rescue Committee and ActionAid. Israel claims the groups failed to meet stringent new requirements to hand over personal details of Palestinian and international staff deployed Gaza. The announcement came days after the UN said Israel has violated its ceasefire obligations by continuing to restrict aid to the war-ravaged territory, where recent winter storms destroyed thousands of tents in refugee camps and the collapse of sanitation facilities leaves 740,000 people exposed to toxic flooding.

Separately, US President Donald Trump said this week that Israeli President Isaac Herzog told him a pardon for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is "on its way." Herzog's office denied the claim, saying it has had no conversations with Trump since Netanyahu requested a pardon in late November. He was indicted on charge of bribery, fraud and breach of trust in 2019, but his trial is suspended as long as he remains in office.

Unitree G1 humanoid robot Koid was asked by CNBC if the AI boom is actually a bubble. "Only time will tell," the AI-powered robot replied, adding that the technology will become more integrated into daily life in the future. What is certain is that prices of robots will have to drop significantly to become common household commodities. Koid robots are marketed in the US at prices ranging from US$8,900 to US$128,900. Beijing-based Unitree, a leader in Chinese robotics, opened its first offline store in Chinese mainland at the JD Mall in the capital this week. The shop will showcase flagship products such as the Go2 robot dog and the G1 robot.

No Vile Content: China Cracks Down on AI Abuse

严禁低俗内容:中国加强打击 AI 滥用

2025-12-29 浏览

China's cyberspace regulator released a draft of new rules tightening controls over use of human-simulated artificial intelligence to ensure that harmful or fake content – including pornography, violence, illegal religious activity, gambling or criminal incitement -- isn't served up to the public and national security isn't compromised. The ban also prohibits content that glamorizes suicide, self-harm or bullying. Under the rules, users must be informed when they open humanoid content generated by AI, according to the Cyberspace Administration of China. The new rules require online providers of such AI-generated content to conduct security assessments and make a report to regional regulators. The new rules are open for public feedback through January 25.

China is heavily supporting advancement of AI technologies, which have a way of running ahead of regulation. Lin Wei, president of Southwest University of Political Science and Law, in an article cited by Global Times, said breakthroughs in AI technology are propelling human-machine interaction beyond mere functional assistance toward emotional and personalized engagement, which gives rise to new risks and challenges the foundations of social order.
