美联储今年首次降息
The US Federal Reserve cut interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point, citing softness in the jobs market and moderating economic activity. The central bank signaled two more cuts this year. The first lower of borrowing costs since last December takes the key rate down to a range of between 4 percent and 4.25 percent. The decision indicates that central bank's concerns about Trump administration tariffs fueling inflation appear to have abated.
President Donald Trump has been browbeating the Fed to lower rates, and tensions between the Fed and administration carried into the board room. Governor Lisa Cook attended the meeting after a court temporarily stayed Trump's decision to fire her. Stephen Miran, a Trump-friendly appointment sworn in just before the meeting to fill a vacancy, was the only one of the 12-member board to dissent in the rate cut after arguing it should be larger. US stocks markets were mixed after the rate cut was announced. The Dow rose 0.6 percent, the S&P 500 slipped 0.1 percent, and the Nasdaq lost 0.3 percent. The yield on the 10-year government Treasury bond edged higher, and gold prices eased from record highs. Canada also lowered its prime lending rate to a three-year low of 2.5 percent on a weak employment market |

中国联通新数据中心采用国产AI芯片驱动
China Unicom, the second-largest of the big three state-owned Chinese telecom companies, is building a US$390 million data center powered by domestically developed artificial intelligence chips from Alibaba and other companies. Alibaba is suppling 72 percent of the chips for the new center, located in the far western province of Qinghai, with the rest coming from companies like Meta X and Biren Tech. China has been encouraging the development of the domestic chip industry to end reliance on US suppliers, with reports that Nvidia chips are now receiving lukewarm response in China.

联合国正式指控以色列实施种族灭绝,"加沙在燃烧"
A United Nations commission of inquiry accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, the first time the UN has officially used that term. The inquiry concluded that four of the five acts that define genocide under international law were violated, including systemically killing members of a group, inflicting serious bodily and mental harm, and preventing births. Israel rejected the findings as "distorted and false," and said they relied entirely on "Hamas falsehoods."
Israel launched its major ground offensive to occupy Gaza City, after hundreds of thousands of city residents were forced to leave and residential buildings were razed in aerial bombing. Israeli defense minister Israel Katz said "Gaza is burning" and the military won't relent until the mission is completed and remaining hostages held by Hamas are released. The offensive began hours after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu papered over differences arising from Israel's attack last week on Hamas quarters in the capital of Qatar. Amid widespread global condemnation of the war and famine in Gaza, Netanyahu admitted that Israel may become a pariah state. |

The fate of the popular social media app in the US, which has 170 million users, has been in limbo since Congress, citing national security concerns, enacted a law last year banning it if it remains in Chinese control. 中国指控英伟达违反反垄断法
China's market regulator on Monday said a preliminary probe found that US chipmaker Nvidia violated the country's anti-monopoly laws, adding that the investigation will continue. China's State Administration for Market Regulation opened the probe related to Nvidia's 2020 acquisition of Israeli-based network-gear maker Mellanox. It didn't give details of the alleged breaches.
Nvidia was a major supplier of AI chips to China until the Trump administration banned its exports earlier this year amid a trade war with China. Though exports on some less-advanced chips have been reinstated, the US company has encountered difficulties in re-entering the market, especially after Chinese officials questioned whether its China-specific H20 chip had installed "backdoors" that could compromise Chinese user data and privacy. |

中国与美国结束会谈首日,未发表声明
Chinese and US negotiators concluded the first day in a fourth round of trade talks with no word on their progress. The discussions resume in Madrid on Monday. The Chinese delegation led by Vice Premier He Lifeng and the US side led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met for almost six hours on Sunday. The future of the US operations of TikTok, owned by China's ByteDance, is known to be among the agenda items. The US Congress passed a law last year banning the platform in the US if it remains in Chinese hands. Implementation of the law has been delayed three times to see if a US-backed buyer can be found. Before the talks began, China said Friday it is committed to safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of its companies. China and the US are currently under a 90-day tariff truce that expires next month.
