Art festival highlights ancient Jiangnan architecture

2021-07-29 浏览

A two-month art festival running at Wisdom Bay in Baoshan District aims to promote the charisma of the ancient buildings in Jiangnan region to teenagers in town. Jiangnan, south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, has for centuries been depicted in a romantic, classic and poetic manner. Many teenagers might have visited some ancient gardens and buildings in Jiangnan region in the past, but this festival offers a more detailed insight about them. The ongoing art festival covers a series of activities and events, varying from exhibitions and public installation to painting and woodcraft workshops. “We hope the teenagers could touch and feel the things they have learnt about in books,” the organizer said. One exhibition introduces the basics of ancient Jiangnan buildings, including the materials used, the construction process and the structure of a typical house. The concrete objects enhanced by animation and VR techniques vividly reflect the history and knowledge behind these buildings. The other exhibition showcases a group of works by five artists inspired by Jiangnan buildings and gardens. For example, artist Chen Hanyu compiled a science book composed of cartoon illustrations. “The book could be a little difficult for teenagers, but it is a good starting point for them,” he said. “As I compiled it, I couldn’t understand some of the building techniques till I did a lot of research to grasp the details in my illustrations.” Likewise Zhou Yang, whose black-and-white photos are on display at the exhibition, said: “I want to invite teenagers and their parents to feel the ambiance wafting over those Jiangnan gardens instead of just listening to the tour guides. They can imagine the fantastic stories that could happen there.” Dates: Through August 31 (closed on Mondays), 10am-8pm Venue: Wisdom Bay Address: 6 Yunchuan Rd, Baoshan

3 die as fresh violence strikes Nagorno-Karabakh

新的暴力袭击纳戈尔诺-卡拉巴赫 3 人死亡

Three Armenian soldiers were killed in border clashes with Azerbaijani forces yesterday in some of the heaviest fighting between the Caucasus rivals since last year’s war over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. The defense ministries of both countries reported the clashes and blamed each other for initiating them before a ceasefire with the mediation of Russia several hours later.Tensions have been running high along the border in recent weeks, with a series of reported shootouts.Last year’s six-week war over Nagorno-Karabakh claimed some 6,500 lives before it ended with a Russian-brokered ceasefire that saw Armenia cede territories it had controlled for decades.Armenia has accused Azerbaijani forces of a series of border intrusions since the war and of seizing pockets of territory including along a lake shared by the two countries.Armenia’s defence ministry said an intense firefight had taken place yesterday near the village of Sotk close to the border with Azerbaijan’s Kelbajar region, one of those Baku reclaimed after the war.As of 8:30am yesterday three Armenian soldiers were dead and two wounded, the ministry said in a statement.“The Azerbaijani side is deliberately escalating the situation as its forces remain illegally on Armenia’s sovereign territory,” Armenia’s foreign ministry said.Azerbaijan’s defence ministry said Armenian forces had opened fire towards Azerbaijani positions in Kelbajar in the early hours of yesterday and that two of its servicemen had been wounded. It claimed Armenian military shelled its positions from tanks and 120-millimeter mortars.“Armenia bears full responsibility for the escalation of tensions,” it said.By noon, both countries said a ceasefire was achieved thanks to mediation by Russian peacekeepers.“An agreement to restore the ceasefire at the northeastern sector of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border has been achieved with the mediation of the peacekeeping forces of the Russian Federation,” said Armenia’s defense ministry.Azerbaijan also said it has agreed to a Russian initiative to halt armed action. The clashes have raised fears of another flare-up in the decades-old conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, an ethnic Armenian region of Azerbaijan that broke away from Baku in the early 1990s.Last year’s war saw Baku take control of parts of Karabakh and surrounding districts which Armenian forces controlled since 1994.

Chinese FM meets US deputy secretary of state, urging rational China policy

2021-07-27 浏览

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday met with US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, urging the United States to drop arrogance and prejudice and steer back to a rational and pragmatic China policy.

In face of severe difficulties and challenges in China-US relations, Wang said it requires serious consideration for the US side to make correct choices as to whether the bilateral ties will head to confrontation or improvement.

Calling Sherman's visit a part of mutual contact and dialogue, Wang said the two sides should enhance mutual understanding, erase misunderstanding, avoid misjudgment and better manage differences via constant dialogues.

As the new US administration has in general continued its predecessor's extreme and erroneous China policy, constantly challenged China's bottom line, and stepped up containment and suppression on China, Wang said China is firmly opposed to such US practices.

Noting the US attempt to impede and disrupt China's modernization drive, Wang said "such an attempt is doomed to fail for now, and is even more so in the future."

China's development, driven powerfully from within, is a trend of historical evolution, Wang said, adding that socialism with Chinese characteristics totally fits China's national realities.

"The great rejuvenation of Chinese nation has entered an irreversible historical process, which cannot be held back by any force or country."

He said China sticks to the path of peaceful development and follows an open strategy of win-win cooperation. China will never tread the beaten track of big powers in seeking hegemony, and is willing to realize common development and prosperity with all countries including the United States, Wang added.

Wang also said that China's development is aimed at seeking happiness for all Chinese people, rather than challenging or replacing the United States. "We take no interest in betting winnings or losses of the US side. China's development is not based on the premise of US decline."

To prevent China-US relations from further deteriorating or even getting out of control, Wang underlined three basic demands as bottom lines that China firmly upholds.

He said the first is that the United States must not challenge, slander or even attempt to subvert the path and system of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Chosen by history and the Chinese people, China's path and system are matters of Chinese people's welfare and Chinese nation's future, as well as core interests that China must firmly uphold, Wang said.

The second, Wang said, is that the United States must not attempt to obstruct or interrupt China's development process.

Chinese people have their rights to live better lives and China has its right to achieve modernization, said Wang, adding that modernization is not an exclusive right of the United States.

China urges the United States to remove all unilateral sanctions, high tariffs, long-arm jurisdiction and technology blockade it has imposed on China as soon as possible, Wang said.

Wang said the third is that the United States must not infringe upon China's state sovereignty, or even damage China's territorial integrity.

He said issues regarding Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong have never been about "human rights" or "democracy," but about fighting against "Xinjiang independence," "Tibet independence" and "Hong Kong independence."

No country will allow its national sovereignty and security to be compromised, Wang added.

As for the Taiwan question, Wang said it's even more important. He said the fact that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one and the same China and Taiwan is part of China has never changed and will never change.

If "Taiwan independence" forces dare to provoke, China has the right to take any necessary measure to stop it, Wang said, urging the US side to honor its commitment on Taiwan question and act prudently.

China is the largest developing country and the United States is the largest developed country, and neither side can replace or defeat the other, Wang said. "We have a clear view on where China-US relations are headed, that is, to find a way for two major countries with different systems, cultures and stages of development to coexist peacefully on this planet through dialogue."

It would be even better if it could be mutually beneficial, Wang said, adding that this is a good thing for both China and the United States, and a great boon for the world. "Otherwise, it would be a catastrophe."

"It is hoped that the US side will have an objective and correct understanding of China, abandon arrogance and prejudice, stop acting as a preacher, and return to a rational and pragmatic China policy," Wang said.

Noting the US-China relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world, Sherman said the United States is willing to continue to have open and candid contacts and dialogues with China.

The United States also hopes that the two countries can coexist peacefully. It has no intention of restricting China's development, nor does it want to contain China, but would like to see China's development, Sherman said.

The two sides can engage in healthy competition, cooperate on climate change, drug control and international and regional hotspot issues, strengthen crisis management capacity, and avoid conflicts, Sherman said.

Sherman said as two major countries, the United States and China can communicate and discuss in a responsible way even if they have differences, in the hope that both sides will take joint actions to improve bilateral relations.

Sherman reiterated that the United States adheres to the one-China policy and does not support "Taiwan independence."

The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.

Biden announces end of US combat operations in Iraq

2021-07-27 浏览

President Joe Biden declared US relations with Iraq would enter a new phase with American troops exiting combat operations in the country by year-end as he held talks on Monday with Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi.

Amid the threat of an Islamic State resurgence and Iran's powerful influence in Baghdad, Biden stressed that Washington remains "committed to our security cooperation" while Kadhemi reaffirmed their "strategic partnership."

US troops in Iraq will "continue to train, to assist, to help, to deal with ISIS (Islamic State) as it arises," Biden said.

But, in a shift that comes as the United States pulls out of Afghanistan, the US leader confirmed that the 2,500 US troops still in Iraq won't be fighting.

"We're not going to be, at the end of the year, in a combat mission," he said.

Vaccines on the way

Eighteen years after the US invaded Iraq to remove strongman Saddam Hussein, and seven years after a US-led coalition battled Islamic State extremists who threatened the country, Washington turned its focus to other types of assistance.

It said it would help strengthen electric power supplies, fight COVID-19, confront the impacts of climate change, and support private sector development.

Some 500,000 coronavirus vaccine doses pledged to Baghdad "will be there in a couple weeks," Biden told Kadhemi in the White House.

Biden also emphasized US support for elections in October in Iraq, saying Washington is working closely with Baghdad, the Gulf Cooperation Council and the United Nations to ensure the elections are fair.

"We support strengthening Iraq's democracy and we're anxious to make sure the election goes forward," he said.

Kadhemi said he was in Washington "to discuss the future of our nation."

Political support

The face-to-face meeting, analysts said, was to give support and cover to Kadhemi, in power for little over a year and under pressure from Iran-allied political factions to push US troops from his country.

A senior US official who would not be identified praised Kadhemi for being pragmatic and "a problem solver rather than someone who tries to use problems for his own political interests."

The main concern from Washington is to lend enough support to Iraqi security forces to keep up the fight against the remnants of the Islamic State group – while also keeping a damper on Iran's influence in Iraq.

Since last year the principal role of the remaining US troops in Iraq has been to train, advise and support their Iraqi counterparts to battle Islamic State.

But powerful pro-Iran political factions, which are crucial to Kadhemi retaining power, are overtly hostile to the US presence.

A US State Department statement on the lower-level bilateral meetings that accompanied the Biden-Kadhemi summit emphasized US respect for Iraq's sovereignty.

"The bases hosting US and other Coalition personnel are Iraqi bases and are operating per existing Iraqi laws; they are not US or Coalition bases, and the presence of international personnel in Iraq is solely in support of the government of Iraq's fight against ISIS," it said.

Floods may disrupt supply chain of goods

2021-07-23 浏览

The floods drenching central China and submerging swathes of a major economic and transport hub are threatening supply chains for goods ranging from cars and electronics to pigs, peanuts and coal.

Power had been partly restored and some trains and flights were running on Thursday but analysts said disruption could last for several days, pushing up prices and slowing business across densely populated Henan and neighboring provinces.

Henan's capital city Zhengzhou is the junction for the major north-south and east-west high-speed rail lines, with connections to most major Chinese cities from one of Asia's largest stations.

Transport of coal from top mining regions like Inner Mongolia and Shanxi via Zhengzhou to central and eastern China was "severely impacted," the state planner said on Wednesday, just as power plants scramble for fuel to meet peak summer demand.

"As Zhengzhou is a top national transportation hub and Henan Province is a major producer of grains, raw materials and some manufactured products like iPhones, we believe the rainfall and flooding will have a material impact on business activity and inflation in the short term," Nomura analysts wrote.

Foxconn, which makes iPhones for Apple at a plant in Zhengzhou, said there has been no direct impact on its main facility.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide any updates as appropriate," it said.

However, a person familiar with the matter said production at a Foxconn facility that makes desktop connectors in the Zhongmu section of Zhengzhou was affected after some equipment was damaged in the flooding.

China's largest automaker, SAIC Motor, warned of short-term impact on logistics at its Zhengzhou plant, while Japan's Nissan said production at its factory had been suspended.

The rain snarled transport of pigs to slaughterhouses in one of the country's top pork-producing regions, said a hog trader, and Nomura said food prices in Henan, home to almost 100 million people, and neighboring provinces could edge up in coming weeks.

The floods could also have a longer-term impact on farm output as rainwater can spread disease on farms.
