China's defense minister warns against 'rule of the jungle,' urges world unity

中国国防部长警告反对“丛林法则”,呼吁世界团结一致

2025-09-19 浏览

Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun warned against "the rule of the jungle" in an increasingly divided world and said nations must make a greater effort toward unity. Delivering the keynote address at the Xiangshan Forum on security in Beijing, he said the world is at a crossroads, caught up in Cold War mentality, and must choose dialogue over confrontation. "External military interference, seeking spheres of influence and coercing others to take sides will bring the international community into chaos," he said, adding that China's strong military will be a force for peace.

UK, US sign US$203 billion investment deal

英国与美国签署2030亿美元投资协议

2025-09-19 浏览

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump signed a 150 billion pound (US$203 billion) investment package called the "Tech Prosperity Deal" on Trump's final day of a state visit to the UK. The investment in the UK from US companies such as Nvidia, Microsoft and Google will create 7,600 jobs. About 60 percent of the investment will come from private equity firm Blackstone over the next decade, with no details of how the money will be spent. Nvidia said it will invest 2 billion pounds to create an AI ecosystem in the UK.

At a press conference capping the two-day visit, Trump repeated his disappointment in Russian President Vladimir Putin for his failure to embrace peace initiatives to end the war in Ukraine and chided Europe again for its purchases of Russian energy, which he said finance the war. Trump also suggested the US might be negotiating with the Taliban in Afghanistan to retake control of the Bagram airbase in that country. He said the UK's decision to recognize Palestinian statehood was one of the few bones of contention between the UK and US.

Huawei unveils roadmap for new AI chips, Nvidia rues cold shoulder from China

华为发布新一代人工智能芯片路线图,英伟达感叹在华遭冷遇

2025-09-19 浏览

Chinese technology giant Huawei, breaking from past policy of not revealing what's in its pipeline, said it will roll out new Ascend AI chips and supernodes in the next three years as it escalates its competition with US-based Nvidia. Huawei said it is planning to launch new versions of its Ascend 950, 960 and 970 chips, with the 950 scheduled for the first quarter of 2026. Its new Atlas 950 supernode, which allows chips to connect at high speeds, is scheduled for launch in 2027. The Chinese government is encouraging development and use of domestic-made chips to reduce the nation's reliance on the US supply chain.

Separately, Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang said he is disappointed by media reports that his company's artificial intelligence chips are no longer welcome in China, once a major market, but he said, "we can only be of service in any market if a country wants us to be." The US administration banned exports of Nvidia chips to China earlier this year, then lifted export controls to allow shipment of lesser-advanced chips.

US Fed cuts interest rates for the first time this year

‌美联储今年首次降息

2025-09-18 浏览

The US Federal Reserve cut interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point, citing softness in the jobs market and moderating economic activity. The central bank signaled two more cuts this year. The first lower of borrowing costs since last December takes the key rate down to a range of between 4 percent and 4.25 percent. The decision indicates that central bank's concerns about Trump administration tariffs fueling inflation appear to have abated.

President Donald Trump has been browbeating the Fed to lower rates, and tensions between the Fed and administration carried into the board room. Governor Lisa Cook attended the meeting after a court temporarily stayed Trump's decision to fire her. Stephen Miran, a Trump-friendly appointment sworn in just before the meeting to fill a vacancy, was the only one of the 12-member board to dissent in the rate cut after arguing it should be larger.

US stocks markets were mixed after the rate cut was announced. The Dow rose 0.6 percent, the S&P 500 slipped 0.1 percent, and the Nasdaq lost 0.3 percent. The yield on the 10-year government Treasury bond edged higher, and gold prices eased from record highs.

Canada also lowered its prime lending rate to a three-year low of 2.5 percent on a weak employment market

China Unicom's new data center powered by domestic AI chips

中国联通新数据中心采用国产AI芯片驱动

China Unicom, the second-largest of the big three state-owned Chinese telecom companies, is building a US$390 million data center powered by domestically developed artificial intelligence chips from Alibaba and other companies. Alibaba is suppling 72 percent of the chips for the new center, located in the far western province of Qinghai, with the rest coming from companies like Meta X and Biren Tech. China has been encouraging the development of the domestic chip industry to end reliance on US suppliers, with reports that Nvidia chips are now receiving lukewarm response in China.

UN officially accuses Israel of genocide, 'Gaza is burning'

联合国正式指控以色列实施种族灭绝,"加沙在燃烧"

2025-09-17 浏览

A United Nations commission of inquiry accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, the first time the UN has officially used that term. The inquiry concluded that four of the five acts that define genocide under international law were violated, including systemically killing members of a group, inflicting serious bodily and mental harm, and preventing births. Israel rejected the findings as "distorted and false," and said they relied entirely on "Hamas falsehoods."

Israel launched its major ground offensive to occupy Gaza City, after hundreds of thousands of city residents were forced to leave and residential buildings were razed in aerial bombing. Israeli defense minister Israel Katz said "Gaza is burning" and the military won't relent until the mission is completed and remaining hostages held by Hamas are released. The offensive began hours after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu papered over differences arising from Israel's attack last week on Hamas quarters in the capital of Qatar. Amid widespread global condemnation of the war and famine in Gaza, Netanyahu admitted that Israel may become a pariah state.

China, U.S. reach basic framework consensus on resolving issues related to TikTok through cooperation.

The fate of the popular social media app in the US, which has 170 million users, has been in limbo since Congress, citing national security concerns, enacted a law last year banning it if it remains in Chinese control. Trump three times delayed implementation of the law to provide time to find buyer.
