China, US Spar Over Ships, Soybeans

中美就船舶与大豆问题交锋

2025-10-15 浏览

China added five US subsidiaries of South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean to its sanctions list over their alleged involvement in Washington's probe into the Chinese shipping industry, the Commerce Ministry said in a statement.

The sanctions took effect on Tuesday, the same day as Washington and China rolled out tit-for-tat port fees on one another's owned, operated or built ships docking at their ports. President Donald Trump has stated his ambition to curb China's global dominance in shipping. China holds a 53 percent market share in shipbuilding, followed by South Korea. The US accounts for only about 0.1 percent.

Bilateral quarrels also extended to agriculture on Tuesday as Trump lashed out again at China's shift in soybean purchases this year to South American from US farmers, calling the snub "economically hostile." In turn, Trump said, the US may terminate all imports of cooking oil from China.

Cracks Mar Fragile Gaza Ceasefire

Israel said it will restrict flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza until all 28 bodies of hostages who died in captivity there are returned. So far, eight remains have been returned, along with all 20 living hostages. Hamas, which earlier said some hostage bodies may be buried under rubble from Israeli bombing, has requested heavy machinery to help in search and recovery efforts. The White House also ramped up pressure on Hamas, with President Donald Trump saying, "If they don't disarm, we will disarm them." Since Israeli troops began withdrawing from Gaza City under the ceasefire agreement, Hamas has killed at least 33 members of rival gangs and suspected Israeli collaborators, Reuters reported.

Nexperia Draws Export Ban, Shares Drop Further

Nexperia遭出口禁令打击,股价持续下挫

2025-10-15 浏览

Netherland-based chipmaker Nexperia, a subsidiary of China's Wingtech, said on Tuesday that the Chinese government banned it from exporting goods from China four days after Dutch authorities seized temporary control of the company, citing management concerns. In its first statement since the Dutch takeover on September 30, Nexperia said it is seeking an exemption from China's countermeasure. The Dutch complaint against Nexperia apparently revolves around alleged improprieties by Zhang Xuezheng, Wingtech founder and Nexperia executive director. But analysts said the Dutch action may also be related to the parent company's presence on a US trade blacklist in a long-arm extension of the US-China trade war. Once part of Dutch electronics firm Philips, Nexperia was acquired by Wingtech in 2018 for US$3.6 billion. Wingtech's Shanghai-listed shares have plunged 10 percent each of the past two days.

A 'New Dawn,' Amid the Euphoria, Uncertain Times Ahead

狂欢中的"新黎明":前路仍存变数

Hamas handed over the remaining 20 living Israeli hostages, Israel released 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,700 Gaza detainees, world leaders signed a Gaza ceasefire deal at a summit in Egypt, aid trucks began rolling back into Gaza, and US President Donald Trump hailed a new dawn in the Middle East. October 13 was, by all accounts, a day for the history books. What happens next, after what Trump called the "long, painful nightmare," will determine whether the momentum toward permanent peace endures. Trump's 20-point peace plan, without details, calls for a transitional international body to take over governance of Gaza and for the territory, which lies in ruins after two years of Israeli bombardment, to be rebuilt. Israel's commitment to the ceasefire is predicated on Hamas disarming, which remains unresolved. And the ultimate goal of many – a Palestinian state alongside Israel – remains as elusive as ever.

Markets Rise as US Tariff Threat Viewed as Negotiating Bluff

市场上涨:美关税威胁被视为谈判虚招

2025-10-14 浏览

Global investors generally dismissed a spat between China and the US as negotiation posturing, with stocks in Europe and the US rebounding from Friday losses. President Donald Trump roiled markets at the end of last week with the announcement of new 100 percent tariffs on China, drawing a stark rebuke from a defiant Beijing. Trump appeared to backpedal a bit, posting online: "Don't worry about China; it will all be fine." The Nasdaq rose 2.2 percent, and the Stoxx600 in Europe gained 0.4 percent. Although stock markets in Asia fell in tandem with Friday's losses on Wall Street, they generally ended off session lows. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index performed best, closing the day with only a 0.2 decline. Cryptocurrencies staged a comeback from a Friday nosedive. Gold and silver rose to record highs, indicating residual economic jitters.

Apple to Begin Pre-Orders for iPhone Air

苹果将开启iPhone Air预订

2025-10-14 浏览

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook on a Monday visit to Shanghai told a Douyin livestream event that the new iPhone Air will begin pre-orders in China on October 17. Following government approval, China Mobile on Monday announced that subscriber reservations for the e-sim card required to activate iPhone Air began. While in the city, Cook also visited the 10th anniversary exhibition of Pop Mart's Labubu collectible toys.

Apple reported that third-quarter sales of iPhone on the Chinese mainland rose 4 percent from a year earlier, largely on government subsidies on purchases of upgraded electronics and on a strong sales start for the new iPhone 16. However, the US company still faces stiff competition from domestic Chinese mobile phone companies. Vivo on Monday launched its new X300 series phones, with rivals Honor and Oppo scheduled for launches later this week.

China Takes Strong Stance Against New US Tariffs and Export Controls

中国强烈反对美国新的关税和出口管制措施

2025-10-13 浏览

Beijing said China will remain resolute in protecting its national interests from US discriminatory actions in a sharp response to US President Donald Trump's decision to break a tariff truce and impose additional 100 percent duties on Chinese imports. The new tariffs, along with additional US controls over exports of critical software to China, are due to come into effect on November 1, unless both sides agree to dial back the spat and avoid a renewed trade war.

"If the US persists in acting unilaterally, China will take corresponding measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests," a Ministry of Commerce spokesperson said. "Our position on a tariff war remains consistent: we do not want one, but we are not afraid of one."

The ministry defended China's recent decision to tighten export controls on rare earth minerals on grounds of 'legitimate" concerns over their military applications, after Trump cited the curbs as justification for new US measures. The statement accused the US of "double standards" and said since the last China-US trade talks in Madrid in September, the US has introduced a string of new restrictive measures targeting China. The US has overstretched the excuse of national security and abused export controls, the spokesperson said, noting that the US Commerce Department now has more than 3,000 items on its export-control list while China has only 900. He also singled out US actions targeting China's shipbuilding and maritime industry for criticism.

"The US has seriously harmed the legitimate and lawful rights and interests of (Chinese) companies, severely disrupted the international economic and trade order, and gravely undermined the security and stability of global industrial and supply chains," the spokesperson said, adding that the US must correct its "wrong practices" and settle differences with dialogue, not threats.

Egypt Hosts Summit on Future of Gaza, Trump to Greet Released Hostages

埃及举行加沙未来峰会,特朗普将迎接获释人质

2025-10-13 浏览

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and US President Donald Trump will co-chair an international summit of some 20 world leaders, including Europeans and Arabs, on Monday afternoon to discuss peace in Gaza. The meeting is scheduled to begin after the noon deadline for Hamas to release remaining hostages -- part of the first step of Trump's peace plan, along with a ceasefire and the resumption of humanitarian aid. The next steps in the plan lack detail but suggest a transitional administration for Gaza by an international body and reconstruction of the war-ravished enclave. The issue of Hamas disarming remains unresolved.

Before flying to Egypt, Trump will be in Israel to greet released hostages in person, Vice President JD Vance said, confirming reports that 20 of 48 hostages held in Gaza are still alive.

In Gaza City, Hamas has mobilized up to 7,000 members of its security forces to reassert control over areas being vacated by Israeli troops and to root out "outlaws and those who have collaborated with Israel," the BBC reported. Clashes between Hamas and armed gang clans killed at least 27.

China, Mining Giant BHP Have Yet to Announce Iron Ore Agreement

中国与矿业巨头必和必拓尚未宣布铁矿石协议

2025-10-13 浏览

An iron-ore price dispute between Australian mining giant BHP and China's state-run buying agent appeared to remain in deadlock amid unconfirmed reports that BHP has agreed to accept the Chinese yuan for partial payment instead of US dollars. China Mineral Resources Group, created three years ago to leverage China's purchasing power in negotiations with foreign suppliers, is said to have suspended purchases last month pending a new contract. The annual price agreement between BHP and China normally sets a benchmark for global prices. Use of yuan in any agreement would be a landmark shift from commodities traditionally priced in US dollars and would signal the rising importance of the yuan in global trade. China is the world's largest buyer of iron ore used in steelmaking, with 70 percent of that supply provided by BHP, Australian miners Rio Tinto and Fortescue, and Brazil's Vale.

China Tightens Exports Licenses for Rare Earth Technologies

中国收紧稀土技术出口许可

2025-10-10 浏览

China's Commerce Ministry said it is imposing tighter export licensing controls on rare earth-related technologies, including mining, smelting, magnetic material manufacturing and resource recycling. In a statement, the ministry also laid out stricter regulations on export of production lines that can be used in rare earth industries and signaled it will ban licenses for uses tied to defense and limit licenses tied to semiconductors. Exports rare earth applications related to emergency medical care, public health emergency responses and disaster relief will be exempt from the licensing. In New York trading, companies related to rare earths, including USA Rare Earth and Niocorp Developments, rose by double digits.

China is the world's biggest miner and processor of rare earths – a group of 17 elements critical in the manufacture of electric cars, aircraft, wind turbines, radar, consumer electronics and other products. China earlier this year eased a ban on rare-earth exports in exchange for the US easing its ban on chip exports to China, but the Trump administration has still kept a tight hand over exports of advanced chips and chipmaking equipment.
