中国国家主席敦促国有企业加快转型升级
| China's state-owned companies, once the prime engine of economic growth but now often lagging the private sector in innovation, should redouble their efforts to upgrade outdated production and embrace the new digital revolution, President Xi Jinping said. "Central state-owned enterprises must fully recognize the responsibilities and missions they shoulder and better serve the overall priorities of the Party and the state," the president said at a meeting of leaders of state-owned companies, Xinhua reported on Tuesday. His remarks came as the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) is crafted to set the stage for a big leap in scientific and technological development. Xi called on the companies to improve their management, strengthen competitiveness and become more active in setting the pace in technological breakthroughs and improving China's self-sufficiency. | |

乌克兰释放可能作出领土让步的信号
| Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed for the first time publicly that his nation might be willing to withdraw its troops from parts of its eastern region to create a demilitarized zone as part of a 20-point, US-brokered peace deal on the table. He said the plan is "the main framework" for ending the nearly four-year war and includes NATO-style Western security guarantees in the event of any future Russian invasions. The Kremlin has so far insisted that Ukraine cede almost a quarter of its own territory in the eastern Donetsk region in return for a peace deal. The rest of the region is already under Russian occupation. In the continuing war this week, Ukrainian troops were forced to retreat from Siversk, a town in Donetsk, as the Russia army continued a slow but steady advance to seize more territory. Siversk, once home to about 11,000 residents, lies in ruins. | |

中国扩大在南极的活动与关注范围
| China has drafted a law covering its governance and interests in Antarctica, Xinhua reported. It has been forwarded to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for review. Antarctica, the last of Earth's great untapped regions, is the focus of global rivalry to stake out territory, especially in mineral rights. China's new law will broaden China's interests from science to tourism, shipping and fishing activities. "The legislation will help better coordinate, manage and regulate Antarctic-related activities and provide strong legal support for China's participation in global Antarctic governance," Xinhua said. China sent its first scientific expedition to the frozen continent in 1983 and now operates five stations there. It is a signatory of an international protocol protecting Antarctica's fragile environment, which is a key factor in determining global climate. | |

日本发生核污染水泄漏
| Water containing radioactive substances leaked at the decommissioning site of the Fugen nuclear reactor in Fukui Prefecture in central Japan on Tuesday. According to Hokuriku Broadcasting, tritium levels increased during dismantling work at an auxiliary building. The leakage was found one day after Japanese authorities approved the restart of the world's biggest nuclear power plant, which has sat idle since the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster in 2011. The decision, contentious with the public, allows Tokyo Electric Power to restart one of seven reactors at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant in Niigata prefecture about 320 kilometers north of Tokyo. | |

日本批准重启最大核电站
| Japanese authorities approved the restart of the world's biggest nuclear power plant, which has sat idle since the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster in 2011. Many local residents disapprove of plans to allow Tokyo Electric Power to restart one of seven reactors at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant in Niigata prefecture. The powerful earthquake and tsunami that trigged a meltdown at the Fukushima plant remain fresh in the public mind, and the nation's regulators have taken a slow approach in restarting 14 of 33 nuclear reactors that remain operable. The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant, which has a combined capacity of about 8,200 megawatts, is located about 320 kilometers north of Tokyo on the island of Honshu. | |

中国指责美国违反国际法
| China called the US seizure of another oil tanker off Venezuela's coast a serious violation of international law. Foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told a daily press briefing that China opposes all "unilateral and illegal" sanctions imposed on shipping. The US Coast Guard intercepted a second crude tanker, which was bound for China, in open waters of the Caribbean over the weekend after President Donald Trump announced a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. Washington claimed the tanker was operating under a "false flag." | |

中国寻求结束柬埔寨与泰国之间的敌对行动
| China has sent an envoy to Southeast Asia to try to de-escalate renewed clashes between Cambodia and Thailand over a longstanding border dispute. Deng Xijun, special envoy for Asian affairs, said China will continue to "play a constructive role in facilitating a peaceful settlement" of the dispute, China's foreign ministry said in a statement. Washington, too, has been trying to engineer a return to ceasefire after the one US President Donald Trump helped broker in October collapsed. About 60 people have died and more than half a million have been displaced since the two nations resumed hostilities several weeks ago. | |
