China International Import Expo Opens Today in Shanghai

中国国际进口博览会今日在上海开幕

2025-11-05 浏览

The China International Import Expo, the largest trade show of its kind in the world, opens for its eighth year in Shanghai today, drawing a record participation of 4,108 companies from around the world. Underscoring the importance of the event, Chinese Premier Li Qiang will deliver a keynote address at the formal opening. The exhibition affords China the opportunity to show the world its commitment to free trade, encourage foreign investment and showcase new products and services.

The first seven expos together generated trade deals valued at US$500 billion. It will feature the debut of 460 new Chinese products and technologies in frontier industries, including humanoid robots. The six-day trade show will be staged in an area equivalent to 60 soccer fields at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai).

China launched the show in 2018 to dispel criticism from the US and other countries that its domestic markets weren't open wide enough to foreigners. A record 430,000 people attended expo last year, and this year's attendance may well surpass that mark. The Hongqiao International Economic Forum will be held in tandem with the trade fair.

The US government shutdown on Tuesday entered its 35th day, tying the record set during President Donald Trump's first term, with no immediately breakthrough in sight. Democrats and Republicans have been in a stalemate over a measure to fund the federal government, largely centered on health-care insurance subsidies. Public sentiment toward the shutdown and Trump's leadership may be reflected in the results of Tuesday's off-year elections that include a high-profile mayoral contest in New York City, several governors' races and a redistricting referendum in California. Election results are expected this afternoon, Beijing time.

Starbucks said it has agreed to sell a controlling stake in its China coffee chain to Hong Kong-based private equity firm Boyu Capital for US$4 billion. Under deal, Boyu will hold a 60 percent interest in the retail operations of the venture, and Starbucks will maintain licensing of the brand and intellectual property used by their joint venture.

Starbucks opened its first outlet in China in 1999 and now has more than 8,000 venues in China, its second-largest market, but it has been steadily been losing market share in recent years to lower-price domestic rivals such as Luckin Coffee. The announcement of the new joint venture came months after the global coffee chain said it was entertaining bids to sell part of its China operations. Starbucks said it values its China business at more than US$13 billion, including proceeds from the stake sale, its retained interest and ongoing licensing fees. The new joint venture will be headquartered in Shanghai.

Nexperia Dispute: a 'Constructive Way Forward?'

安世纠纷:能否找到建设性出路?

2025-11-03 浏览

The recent trade deal between the US and China has shifted the ground somewhat under the high-profile dispute involving the US, China and Netherlands over Dutch-based chipmaker Nexperia, which is owned by China's Wingtech Technology. The dispute threatens to disrupt supplies of vital chips used in automaking, alarming global carmakers.

Dutch authorities seized Nexperia in late October on grounds of national security, and Beijing responded by banning chip exports from Nexperia's Chinese factories. The Dutch action was apparently based on information from the US that Washington was expanding a trade blacklist, which already includes Wingtech, to rope in subsidiaries like Nexperia. However, the trade agreement reached by Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump at a meeting last week has suspended the list expansion. In turn, China's commerce ministry indicated it may loosen export restrictions on semiconductors made by Nexperia in China.

The Dutch company said on Sunday it welcomed recent statements by the US and China removing barriers to chip shipments, but it declined to comment from a statement from its Chinese subsidiary that it will seek independence from its parent. The Dutch government said separately it is continuing talks with the Chinese and other governments on a "constructive way forward." Nexperia's China unit on Sunday said it has "sufficient inventories" and a stable supply chain, seeking to calm concerns after its Dutch parent halted wafer shipments to its Chinese plant last week.

China, US Agree to Ease Trade Friction

中美达成共识,将减少贸易摩擦

2025-10-31 浏览

Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, after a 90-minute meeting in South Korea on Thursday, agreed to roll back some tariffs and trade barriers that have flared tensions.

China's Ministry of Commerce said the agreement calls for the US to reduce a fentanyl-related tariff, continue a suspension of 24 reciprocal tariffs on Chinese imports, pause investigations targeting China's shipping and logistics industries, and delay a blacklist expansion that could affect some 20,000 Chinese companies. Trump said the accord calls for China to suspend tighter export controls on rare earth minerals for a year, resume buying US soybeans and take stronger steps to curtail exports of chemicals used in making illicit fentanyl.

Trump also said the agreement leaves an overall average tariff rate of about 47 percent on Chinese imports, and he said the meeting didn't cover the sale of Nvidia's advanced AI Blackwell chips to China, which had earlier been signaled.
