China's meteorological authority on Monday renewed an orange alert for a cold wave, forecasting big temperature drops, winds, sandstorms, rains, and snow in vast regions of the country.

From Monday to Wednesday, temperatures are expected to plunge by 10 to 16 degrees Celsius in most of central and eastern China, according to the National Meteorological Center.

Sandstorms are expected to hit areas in the north and northwest, said the center.

Some areas of Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Jilin, Shandong, Jiangsu, Guizhou, and Hunan could see temperatures drop by over 16 degrees Celsius, according to the center.

The center warned against the cold wave's impact on agriculture and advised the public to take precautions against the temperature change and the winds.

China has a four-tier, color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe weather, followed by orange, yellow, and blue.

No immediate nuclear safety concerns at Zaporizhzhia plant: IAEA

2022-11-22 浏览

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Monday that there were "no immediate nuclear safety or security concerns" at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine despite intense shelling at the facility over the weekend.

The United Nations nuclear watchdog said in a statement that its experts at the Zaporizhzhia plant assessed the damage at the site earlier that day and found its "key equipment remained intact."

"The status of the six reactor units is stable, and the integrity of the spent fuel, the fresh fuel and the low, medium and high-level radioactive waste in their respective storage facilities was confirmed," the IAEA statement quoted its expert team as saying.

However, the IAEA said its experts "still observed widespread damage across the site" due to the shelling on Saturday evening and Sunday morning, described by the agency as "one of the most serious such incidents at the facility in recent months."

The experts' observations included damage to the plant's condensate storage tanks and several impacts on the main road along the plant's reactors, according to the statement.

Repair work for the damage is underway, the agency said, adding that there had been no further attacks on the plant on Monday.

The IAEA also said that its Director General Rafael Grossi had intensified consultations to establish a protection zone at the Zaporizhzhia plant following the latest attacks on the facility.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, one of the largest nuclear power plants in Europe, has been under the control of Russian forces since March.

In recent months, the plant has been attacked by shelling, with Russia and Ukraine accusing each other of the attacks.

England kicks off World Cup campaign with 6-2 win against Iran in Group B

2022-11-22 浏览

England put pre-tournament doubts behind them on Monday when they kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 6-2 win against Iran that equals their second-biggest-ever win in the competition.

Gareth Southgate's side had gone into the game without a win in six games and question marks over whether the coach would have three or four at the back.

In the end, Southgate kept faith with the criticized defender, Harry Maguire and the Manchester United player partnered with John Stones in the heart of the defense, with Bukayo Saka preferred to Phil Foden on the right of the England midfield.

They turned out to be correct decisions as Maguire had a solid display and helped set up Saka for England's second goal of the game.

With Iran boss Carlos Queiroz opting to play three central defenders and leave Porto's Mehdi Taremi as a loan striker, England's full-backs Luke Shaw and Kieron Trippier looked to press forward from the start, with Trippier forcing a corner, from which it looked as if Maguire was wrestled to the ground, although the VAR didn't intervene.

A cross from Kane had Saka and Maguire both stretching for a touch as Iran keeper Alireza Beiranvand collided badly with defender Majid Hosseini and after a long stoppage, the keeper was eventually replaced by Seyed Hossein.

The delay of over 10 minutes briefly broke England's rhythm, but with Mason Mount, Saka, Jude Bellingham and Raheem Sterling all offering pace and mobility ahead of midfield lynchpin, Declan Rice, the first goal wasn't long in coming.

Most of England's attacks had been down the right, but it was a cross from left back, Luke Shaw that picked put Bellingham, who drifted into the area to head into the far corner.

Saka volleyed home the second in the 43rd minute after Maguire, who had earlier headed against the bar, outjumped two defenders to set him up and in with England running rampant, Sterling added a third in the first of 14 minutes of injury time after a great combination between Bellingham and Kane.

Sake scored his second of the game in the 62nd minute after linking with Sterling and drifting across the front of the area, before stroking a left-foot effort into the corner of the net after a slight deflection.

Mehdi Taremi scored for Iran in the 67th minute, getting behind the defense to power in a shot off the underside of the bar, moments before Maguire had to leave the pitch after apparently feeling dizzy.

Southgate rang the changes and Marcos Rashford added England's fifth barely a minute after getting into the action and fellow substitutes, Callum Wilson and Jack Grealish then combined for Grealish to net a sixth for England.

The VAR then awarded Iran a penalty for a slight shirt pull and Taremi scored to make it 6-2 with the last kick of the game.

Japan's Kishida appoints new internal affairs minister

2022-11-21 浏览

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has appointed former Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto as the new internal affairs minister, Matsumoto said Monday.

Matsumoto has taken over from Minoru Terada who was summoned to the prime minister's office the previous day and effectively sacked for being involved with political funding scandals.

Terada's dismissal comes amid slumping public support for Kishida's Cabinet and marks the third minister to effectively be fired in less than a month.

Prior to his dismissal, calls for Terada to step down had been growing from within his own ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), who said he had failed to explain his involvement in the scandals sufficiently.

Opposition parties, who launched the criticism and calls for Terada to be fired, said his job as internal affairs and communications minister involves him handling political funds and election issues.

Terada is alleged to have falsely reported expenses to the tune of 1 million yen (US$7,000) connected to last year's lower house election, with the tab picked up by one of his support groups, which is in violation of Japan's public offices election law.

Terada had previously been under fire for admitting that his support group twice filed annual political funding reports that were signed off by a dead person, in violation of the political funds control law that Terada's ministry was purportedly overseeing.

Matsumoto joined the LDP in 2017 after leaving the now-defunct Democratic Party of Japan in 2015 where he served as foreign minister when the party was in power between 2009 and 2012.

Matsumoto, 63, who hails from Tokyo, is an eight-term lower house lawmaker. His constituency is in western Japan's Hyogo Prefecture.

FIFA World Cup opens in Doha after 12-year build-up

2022-11-21 浏览

With more than 60,000 fans observing from the stands and hundreds of millions more watching on television, Qatar showed the world its ability to stage an unforgettable FIFA World Cup.

A dazzling opening ceremony that featured K-pop star Jung Kook, Qatari singer Fahad Al Kubaisi and actor Morgan Freeman set the tone for an entertaining opening night.

"This opening (ceremony) is different from previous World Cups. It's amazing!" said Adam Wolford, a 48-year-old US fan who had traveled to Qatar from Los Angeles to watch 13 of the tournament's 64 matches.

"The organization is way better than what I had expected," he added.

In the main event that followed, Enner Valencia scored a first-half brace as Ecuador overcame Qatar 2-0 at the Al Bayt Stadium, around 50 kilometers north of Doha.

"We competed well, but it's a World Cup, and we were playing in it for the first time," Qatar manager Felix Sanchez said after the match. "We can improve a lot, and we know we haven't shown our maximum level."

On and off the pitch, Qataris have every reason to be proud. Brand-new infrastructure - seven state-of-the-art stadiums that have been built from scratch and one that has been almost completely refurbished - is testament to the country's organizational capacity and commitment to staging a spectacular World Cup for the ages.

"We have worked hard, along with many people, to make it one of the most successful tournaments," Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani said during the opening ceremony. "We have exerted all efforts and invested for the good of all humanity."

The emir was seated between FIFA president Gianni Infantino and his father, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who secured the World Cup for the Gulf nation 12 years ago.

"How beautiful it is for people to put aside what divides them in order to celebrate their diversity and what brings them together at the same time," Tamim said, with his words translated into English on a video screen inside the stadium.

"I wish all the participating teams a magnificent football performance, high sportsmanship, and a time full of joy, excitement and delight for you all," he continued. "And let there be days that are inspiring with goodness and hope."

On Saturday, Infantino spoke for many when he lamented "western hypocrisy" in response to questions about Qatar's human rights record.

"We have been told many, many lessons from some Europeans, from the western world," Infantino told reporters. "I think for what we Europeans have been doing the last 3,000 years we should be apologizing for the next 3,000 years before starting to give moral lessons to people."

This World Cup is also showcasing Chinese innovation and cutting edge technology.

Chinese elements and contributions can be seen everywhere in Qatar - from stadiums to telecommunications and even electric power plants.

The Lusail Stadium, which will host the World Cup final and closing ceremony, was built by China Railway Construction.

There are also solar photovoltaic power stations built by Power China, which are providing round-the-clock green energy to Qatar's population and the hundreds of thousands of visitors the country will receive during the World Cup.

Zhengzhou-based manufacturer Yutong sold 1,500 new energy vehicles to Qatar to allow for green commuting.

There are myriad other products and services provided by Chinese companies that can be seen here on a daily basis by locals and visitors alike.

This is a symbol of China's development but also recognition that "China made and China built" is a doctrine that has been embraced and appreciated by people all over the world.

Leading Chinese engineer Li Bai said: "The construction of the Lusail Stadium marked the first time that a Chinese company participated as a main contractor to design and build a professional football venue under the highest FIFA standards.

"It was also the first time that a Chinese company carried out the design and construction work for a World Cup stadium," he added.

In 2020, Yutong was selected in a competitive bidding process to provide vehicles for this World Cup. In addition to subsequent orders, Qatar imported 1,500 buses from China, including 888 battery-run electric buses, which are transporting fans, FIFA officials and media to stadiums.

This is the first time that a major international sports event has used Chinese eco-friendly buses on a large scale, and it is also the first time that fully electric buses have been used as a principal World Cup vehicle fleet.

"That is to say that China's new energy technology has been recognized by the world," said Gan Shaoying, head of Yutong's Qatar service team.

China Yiwu Sports Goods Association said the country provided 70 percent of "peripheral World Cup products" to Qatar, including flags, horns, whistles, footballs, team shirts, scarves, ornaments and pillows.

Zhou Jian, Chinese Ambassador to Qatar, said China has made an impact on the world of football even if its team didn't qualify for the game's showpiece event.

"I feel so honored as China is able to make contributions to the World Cup," he said.

Valencia fires Ecuador to 2-0 win over Qatar in World Cup opener

2022-11-21 浏览

Enner Valencia scored two first-half goals as Ecuador beat hosts Qatar 2-0 in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup on Sunday.

The Fenerbahce forward converted a penalty before powering home a header to give Gustavo Alfaro's side a perfect start in Group A.

Despite having 47 percent of possession, the hosts didn't manage a single shot on target while Ecuador had three.

The result marked the first time that a host team has lost the opening game of the World Cup.

The partisan crowd was sent into stunned silence when Ecuador appeared to take the lead in the fifth minute at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, around 50 kilometers north of Qatari capital Doha.

Valencia powered a header into the back of the net following Felix Torres' overhead kick, but the goal was disallowed after the former West Ham and Everton forward was ruled offside by the video assistant referee.

Valencia did not have to wait long for his next chance. The 33-year-old was awarded a penalty in the 15th minute when he was tripped by goalkeeper Saad Al-Sheeb, having been played through on goal by Sebastian Mendez.

He then calmly slotted his spot-kick into the bottom right corner after sending Al-Sheeb the wrong way.

Ecuador's all-time leading scorer was in inspired form and he doubled the lead just after the half hour by straining every muscle in his neck to thump a header past Al-Sheeb following Angelo Preciado's cross.

Qatar's best chance of the opening 45 minutes came moments before the first-half whistle when Almoez Ali sent a glancing header wide of the target connecting Hassan Al-Haydos' cross from the right flank.

Ecuador emerged from the interval again looking the more dangerous team in attack. Preciado sent a speculative 25-meter shot over the bar and Al-Sheeb kept out Romario Ibarra's attempt following an errant Bassam Al-Rawi pass.

It took Qatar until the hour mark to make their first convincing attacking move of the second half. Abdelkarim Hassan sent a dangerous cross into the box from the right wing and Pedro Miguel rose highest only to see his header sail just wide.

Scoring chances for both teams were few and far between thereafter as Ecuador were content to sit back and concede possession without ever looking in danger of letting their lead slip.

Qatar will face Senegal in their next match on Friday while Ecuador are scheduled to meet the Netherlands the same day.

Xi calls for high-quality China-Singapore cooperation

2022-11-18 浏览

Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Thursday that China welcomes Singapore's in-depth participation in building the new development paradigm and is committed to making "high quality" a distinct feature of cooperation between the two countries.

Xi made the remarks when meeting with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on the sidelines of the 29th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting.

Xi pointed out that facing the once-in-a-century pandemic and changes unseen in a century, China-Singapore relations have maintained a sound momentum. This has not only facilitated the COVID-19 response and economic recovery of the two countries, but also injected positive energy to stability and prosperity of the region.

The China-Singapore relationship is forward-looking, strategic and exemplary, said Xi.

The 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has made strategic deployment on building a modern socialist country in all respects and promoting Chinese modernization on all fronts. China will work with Singapore for new progress in the all-round cooperative partnership progressing with the times between the two countries, said Xi.

Underscoring China's readiness to develop close high-level exchanges with Singapore, Xi said the two sides need to ensure sound implementation of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor as a landmark project of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation between China and Singapore, and promote upgrading of cooperation projects in digitalization, green development and other areas.

Efforts need to be made to conclude follow-up negotiations on upgrading the China-Singapore FTA at an early date, enhance the level of trade and investment liberalization, and facilitate people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, he said, adding that both China and Singapore rely on this region for development and their development is well-integrated into and beneficial to this region.

China will work with Singapore to uphold solidarity and cooperation in the region, oppose group politics, resist bloc confrontation, keep to the right direction of economic and regional integration, and firmly reject the attempts to push for "decoupling and severing supply chains," or to build "a small yard with high fences," said Xi, noting that it is hoped that the two sides will work together to pursue the Global Development Initiative (GDI) in this region.

For his part, Lee expressed his pleasure to once again congratulate Xi in person on the successful conclusion of the 20th National Congress of the CPC and on his re-election as general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.

Noting the strong momentum of Singapore-China cooperation, he stressed that under the complex international situation, Singapore looks forward to further deepening its ties with China, and stands ready to work with China to advance the existing mechanisms of bilateral cooperation and upgrade the three government-to-government projects in Suzhou, Tianjin and Chongqing and the Guangzhou Knowledge City project (3+1).

China's rise is not stoppable, Lee said, adding that a strong and friendly China will bring positive impact on the region and the world, and can help small and medium-sized countries achieve common development. Singapore sees China's development as positive, wishes the GDI well and will explore ways to participate, he said.
