Chinese tourist injured in Phuket parasailing accident receives compensation

2024-03-01 浏览

A Thai parasailing operator agreed to pay a Chinese tourist 400,000 baht (US$11,153) in compensation after she broke her leg in a parasailing accident on Karon Beach in Phuket on Saturday, February 24.

The operator blamed the accident on a change in wind direction and insisted they adhered to strict safety measures.

The Chinese woman, identified as Nada Han from Zhejiang Province on social media, expressed her dissatisfaction regarding the inadequate safety measures provided by the parasail service provider after the accident. The woman also criticised the hospital she was admitted to for lacking the necessary equipment to treat her injury.

Han accused Thai business operators of prioritising money over tourist safety. She claimed that the parasail operator also refused to adequately compensate her, offering only 50,000 baht despite a treatment cost of 200,000 baht.

In her video, Han warned others, especially foreign tourists in Thailand, to avoid extreme sports in Thailand. She said she saw no locals participating in these sports on the beach. She only saw foreigners, mostly Chinese, who paid to do the sports.

"Thai business operators only saw a foreign tourist like me as a source of income. They do not care about our lives and safety."

Her story attracted the attention of both Chinese and Thai netizens, prompting the intervention of the Phuket Marine Office. The Director of the Phuket Marine Office, Natchapong Pranit, visited Han in hospital on Wednesday, to discuss the accident in detail.

Natchapong stressed that the province takes the safety of tourists seriously and that there are training courses for extreme and water sports operators in the area. He assured the Chinese woman that he would facilitate the compensation agreement and that relevant departments would investigate the cause of the accident.

The parasailing operator, a Thai man named Kanchit Thamsuea, also visited the hospital to provide his perspective. He is the owner of Nong Pleng Pleng Sea Sport, a water sports service, and was present at the scene during the accident.

Kanchit clarified that Han and her friend were parasailing together under the supervision of his team. The staff safely guided the two tourists towards the ground but a sudden change in wind direction, just 2 metres from the ground, led to loss of control and the subsequent fall.

Emphasising the importance of stringent safety measures, Kanchit stressed that his team meticulously inspected the equipment and monitored wind direction before each launch. With more than 10 staff members on standby at all times, their priority was ensuring the safety of their customers.

Kanchit denied the existence of repeated parasailing accidents mentioned by Nadahan, asserting that this was the first incident in his 10 years of operating the service.

Kanchit clarified that he had not refused compensation and had been supporting Han's treatment since the beginning. Contrary to her statement, he did not offer her only 50,000 baht. He believed this misinformation arose from miscommunication and a language barrier.

According to a report by Phuket Hotnews yesterday evening, Nadahan initially sought 500,000 baht in compensation, with 120,000 baht designated for her medical expenses. Following negotiations, Kanchit agreed to a reduced amount of 400,000 baht, which Han accepted

The parasailing operator paid 120,000 baht yesterday and will transfer the remaining amount later. Han's condition improved, and she returned to China via Phuket International Airport on Thursday.

Lawyer awarded 200,000 yuan after stopping attack on driver

2024-02-27 浏览

BYD has awarded 200,000 yuan (US$27,783) to the owner of one of their cars for intervening in a fight on a Hangzhou highway on Sunday. The story topped the Weibo hot search list.

A video circulated online showed the altercation on an overpass where a Bentley driver was seen dragging a BMW driver from his car and assaulting him.

Hangzhou police issued a statement confirming the incident as an intentional injury case currently under further investigation.

The passing BYD driver's intervention was widely praised online. Li Yunfei, brand and PR manager at BYD Group, said the courageous BYD Han owner, lawyer Sun Zijian, would be given lifetime free vehicle maintenance and 200,000 yuan for his bravery.

In addition, BYD is considering establishing an award for car owners who demonstrate positive energy and bravery, offering rewards of between 50,000 to 200,000 yuan.

The move by BYD sparked lively discussion online, with much praise for the lawyer's courage as well as BYD's reward initiative.

The incident occurred on February 22 when a Bentley driver assaulted a BMW driver on the Qiantang overpass in Hangzhou. Sun said he had been returning from meeting a client when he witnessed the assault.

Despite the risks and moving traffic, he intervened, calling an ambulance and ensuring the victim's safety.

Sun, a 39-year-old lawyer with the Zhejiang Zhehang law firm, responded to the widespread praise and support for his actions by expressing his gratitude on social media, emphasizing the importance of kindness.

Sun said he was just an ordinary person doing what was right. He highlighted the positive impact of intervening that not only saved the victim but potentially the assailant from further regret.

"At a crucial moment, you stood up!" Ding Xiangsong, the deputy director of the Hangzhou Civil Affairs Bureau, expressed during an award ceremony to grant Sun the honor of "Good Person of Hangzhou."

"I feel a bit overwhelmed. I thought I did okay, but never expected to receive such a high honor," Sun admitted with a hint of shyness. He felt suddenly burdened with a lot of responsibilities.

Recalling the incident on the overpass where he saved a person, Sun mentioned, "My body reacted before my brain did. I was most worried about the injured person getting hit again. Other drivers and I called for an ambulance. I believe anyone in my situation would have done the same."

2024-02-26 浏览

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has condemned the so-called "China-phobia" among the United States and some of its Western allies, the London-based Financial Times (FT) reported.

In response to US criticism of his country's ties with Beijing, Ibrahim was puzzled that why Malaysia would "pick a quarrel" with China, its largest trading partner, according to the report published Sunday on the FT website.

"Why must I be tied to one interest? I don't buy into this strong prejudice against China, this China-phobia," he said in an interview with the FT in Penang, his birthplace in northern Malaysia.

Anwar said he has told US Vice President Kamala Harris: "We are a small country struggling to survive in a complex world... I want to focus on what is best for us," according to the report.

Anwar took office as Malaysia's prime minister in November 2022. Calling China an important neighbor, Anwar has said his government will give priority to enhancing relations with China in the fields of trade, investment and culture.

For the benefit of the Malaysian people's economic interests, China's role is pivotal, he said.

Mainland urges Taiwan to publish truth of fatal boat incident

2024-02-22 浏览

A spokesperson for the Chinese mainland on Wednesday urged Taiwan to make public the truth of a recent incident in waters near Kinmen that led to the death of two people on a mainland fishing boat.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, also called on relevant parties in Taiwan to hand serious punishments to those responsible for the incident, satisfy reasonable demands of the bereaved families, and issue a formal apology to them.

"We are resolute in protecting our compatriots' legitimate rights and interests, and allow no recurrence of such an incident," Zhu said.

Taiwan authorities' brutal treatment of the fishing boat from Fujian Province on February 14 led to all four people on board falling into the sea, and two of them died.

However, relevant authorities in Taiwan denied any wrongdoing, and attempted to conceal the truth. Certain individuals in Taiwan have also made irresponsible remarks concerning the incident, Zhu said.

She noted that it was not until the bereaved families and compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait made a strong push for the truth that relevant authorities in Taiwan admitted that a vessel from Taiwan had rammed into the fishing boat, causing it to capsize and leading to the casualties. Despite this, the Taiwan side continues to attempt to cover up the truth of the incident and shirk its responsibilities.

Zhu said that the incident was not a sporadic case. Since the Democratic Progressive Party came to power in Taiwan in 2016, similar incidents have occurred on multiple occasions, seriously harming the interests of those in the mainland fishing industry and the sentiment of mainland compatriots, she noted.

Chinese, Spanish FMs reach broad consensus

2024-02-20 浏览

China is willing to work with Spain to build a bilateral relationship with strategic determination, providing new impetus for the rejuvenation and development of both countries and injecting new vitality into China-Europe ties, visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Sunday.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks at a joint press conference with his Spanish counterpart Jose Manuel Albares.

China regards Spain as a trustworthy and good partner in the European Union , Wang added.

Expounding on the broad consensus, Wang said both sides agreed that the strategic mutual trust is the solid cornerstone for the development of China-Spain relations.

Last year, the two countries celebrated their 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The two heads of state drew a strategic blueprint for the development of bilateral ties, and pragmatic cooperation has shown vigorous vitality, Wang said.

The two sides will continue the momentum of high-level exchanges, create a favorable political atmosphere, reaffirm their mutual respect for each other's core interests and major concerns, and understand and support each other in their efforts to safeguard national unification and ethnic unity, Wang noted.

He said China appreciates Spain's adherence to the one-China principle.

"We both agree that opening-up and cooperation are the inherent driving force for the development of China-Spain relations," Wang said.

The two sides are willing to expand cooperation in new areas such as electric vehicles, green energy and digital economy, provide a fair, impartial and non-discriminatory business environment to each other's enterprises, continuously improve the quality and resilience of two-way investment, and help each other in their economic transformation and upgrading, Wang said.

China has announced the lifting of restrictions on imports of Spanish deboned beef from cattle under 30 months of age, Wang added. He welcomed Spain to make good use of such platforms as the China International Import Expo, China International Consumer Products Expo, and the China International Fair for Trade in Services to promote its exports of more quality products to China.

Wang said that the two sides agreed that people-to-people exchanges are valuable in boosting China-Spain relations. Last year, the two countries hosted "Year of Culture and Tourism" events. The "Exhibition of Civilization of Qin Dynasty and Han Dynasty" and the "Dali Art Exhibition" attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors.

China has unilaterally rolled out a visa-free policy for Spanish tourists to China, and Spain is also ready to adopt more measures to facilitate personnel exchanges between the two countries, Wang said.

The giant panda is an ambassador of friendship between the Chinese and Spanish people, Wang said, noting that a popular children's song composed by Spanish musicians for Chulin, the first giant panda born in Madrid in 1982, is familiar to several generations of Spanish children.

China will send a pair of young pandas to Spain after the current loan agreement expires and the panda family in Madrid returns to China, in a bid to sustain the "panda bond" between the two peoples that has lasted more than four decades, Wang said.

Wang said the two sides agreed that maintaining a stable China-Europe relationship aligns with their common interests. China appreciates Spain's contributions to advancing China-Europe exchanges and cooperation when it held the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of last year, he said, adding that China anticipates and believes that Spain will continue to play an active role in the EU.

The two countries are ready to promote China-Europe joint actions to cope with global challenges such as climate change, food security and public health, shouldering due international responsibilities in a world full of uncertainties, he said.

"We deeply felt that the international community is increasingly worried about the future and destiny of humanity and has a stronger desire for peace, stability and development," Wang said, adding that both China and Spain are steady forces for maintaining the international order and promoting global development.

China is ready to join hands with Spain to demonstrate a sense of responsibility, coordinate closely, gather broader consensus and put forth more effective solutions to push for political settlement of hotspot issues and make greater contributions to building a better future for mankind, Wang said.

Noting that next year marks the 20th anniversary of China-Spain comprehensive strategic partnership, Wang said China is willing to work with Spain, by upholding the spirit of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, to push for more positive results in exchanges and cooperation in diverse sectors and bring bilateral ties to a new level.

26 EU countries call for 'immediate humanitarian pause' in Gaza

2024-02-20 浏览

Twenty-six member states of the European Union called for an "immediate humanitarian pause that would lead to a sustainable ceasefire" in the besieged Gaza Strip, the bloc's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Monday.

At a meeting of EU foreign ministers, all EU countries except Hungary warned Israel against launching an assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah, which they said would deepen the catastrophe of some 1.5 million refugees crammed into the city.

"An attack on Rafah would be absolutely catastrophic ... it would be unconscionable," Ireland's Foreign Minister Micheal Martin said before the meeting.

Israel's reported plans for an assault on the city have sounded international alarm bells, with many countries urging restraint or cancelation of the operation.
