Iran releases 1st investigation report on President Raisi's helicopter crash

伊朗发布总统直升机坠机事故第一份调查报告

2024-05-24 浏览

The General Staff of Iran's Armed Forces on Thursday released the first report on the causes of a recent helicopter crash that resulted in the deaths of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his entourage.

Following the crash, a senior investigation committee composed of experts, specialists and technicians arrived at the scene on Monday morning, the semi-official Tasnim news agency quoted the report by the General Staff of Iran's Armed Forces as saying.

According to the report, the helicopter had remained on its predetermined course all along the way and had not deviated from the flight route.

Almost one minute and a half before the incident, the pilot of the crashed helicopter had contacted the other two helicopters of the president's convoy, the report said.

No trace of bullets or similar items have been detected on the wreckage of the crashed helicopter, it said.

After crashing into the mountain, the helicopter had caught fire, it said.

"Complications of the region, fog and low temperature" had caused the search and rescue operations to continue until nightfall and then throughout the night, the report said, adding, "At 5:00 a.m. local time on Monday (0130 GMT), with the assistance of drones, the exact location of the incident was identified."

No suspicious issue had been detected in the conversations between the watchtower and the flight crew, it added.

More details would be provided after further investigations, it said.

Raisi and his entourage were en route to East Azarbaijan province when the helicopter carrying them crashed in a mountainous area on Sunday.

Also on board the helicopter were Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, the representative of Iran's Supreme Leader to East Azarbaijan.

Raisi was laid to rest on Thursday in the holy shrine of Imam Reza in his hometown, the northeastern city of Mashhad.

PLA conducts joint military drills surrounding Taiwan Island

中国人民解放军位台岛周边开展“联合利剑-2024A”演习

2024-05-23 浏览

The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) started joint military drills surrounding the island of Taiwan from 7:45am on Thursday.

The drills are being conducted in the Taiwan Strait, the north, south and east of Taiwan Island, as well as areas around the islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu, and Dongyin.

Li Xi, spokesperson for the theater command, said military services including the army, navy, air force and rocket force of the theater command are being organized to conduct the joint drills, code-named Joint Sword-2024A, from Thursday to Friday.

The drills focus on joint sea-air combat-readiness patrol, joint seizure of comprehensive battlefield control, and joint precision strikes on key targets, Li said, adding that the exercises involve the patrol of vessels and planes closing in on areas around the island of Taiwan and integrated operations inside and outside the island chain to test the joint real combat capabilities of the forces of the command.

The spokesperson said the drills also serve as a strong punishment for the separatist acts of "Taiwan independence" forces and a stern warning against the interference and provocation by external forces.

'Taiwan independence' separatist activities most destructive elements to peace across Taiwan Strait: Chinese FM

中国外长:“台独”分裂行径是对台海和平最重大的破坏

2024-05-22 浏览

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday the Taiwan question is at the core of China's core interests and "Taiwan independence" separatist activities are the most destructive elements to the peace across the Taiwan Strait.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stated China's solemn position on the Taiwan question while addressing a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Astana.

Denouncing the actions of individuals like Lai Ching-te as disgraceful betrayals of the nation and the ancestors, Wang said no matter what tricks they play, they cannot prevent China from ultimately achieving complete reunification, as Taiwan is bound to return to the embrace of the motherland.

All "Taiwan independence" separatists are set to be nailed to the pillar of shame in history, Wang said.

During the meeting, Wang expressed appreciation for the SCO member states for firmly adhering to the one-China principle based on the basic norms of international relations on defending each country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Wang said he believes that the world will continue to support the Chinese people's just cause of opposing "Taiwan independence" separatist activities and striving for national reunification.

Shaken passengers arrive in Singapore after deadly turbulence-stricken flight

新加坡航空一架客机飞行途中遭遇严重气流颠簸,迫降泰国

2024-05-22 浏览

More than 140 passengers and crew from a Singapore Airlines flight hit by heavy turbulence that left dozens injured and one dead finally reached Singapore on a relief flight Wednesday morning after an emergency landing in Bangkok.

The scheduled London-Singapore flight on a Boeing 777-300ER plane diverted to Bangkok after the plane was buffeted by turbulence that flung passengers and crew around the cabin, slamming some into the ceiling.

A 73-year-old British passenger died of a suspected heart attack, and at least 30 people were injured.

"I saw people from across the aisle going completely horizontal, hitting the ceiling and landing back down in like really awkward positions. People, like, getting massive gashes in the head, concussions," Dzafran Azmir, a 28-year-old student onboard the flight, told Reuters after arriving in Singapore.

Photographs from the interior of the plane showed gashes in the overhead cabin panels, oxygen masks and panels hanging from the ceiling and luggage strewn around. A passenger said some people's heads had slammed into the lights above the seats and broken the panels.

Singapore Airlines took 131 passengers and 12 crew on the relief flight from Bangkok, which reached Singapore just before 5am (9pm GMT). There were 211 passengers including many Australians, British and Singaporeans, and 18 crew onboard the original flight; injured fliers and their families remained in Bangkok.

"On behalf of Singapore Airlines, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased," Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong said in a video message.

Singapore's Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB) is looking into the incident, and the US National Transportation Safety Board is also sending representatives for support.

The plane encountered sudden extreme turbulence, Goh said, and the pilot then declared a medical emergency and diverted to Bangkok.

Aircraft tracking provider FlightRadar 24 said at about 7:49am GMT the flight encountered "a rapid change in vertical rate, consistent with a sudden turbulence event," based on flight tracking data.

"There were thunderstorms, some severe, in the area at the time," it said.

Weather forecasting service AccuWeather on Tuesday said rapidly developing, explosive thunderstorms near the flight path of Flight 321 most likely contributed to violent turbulence.

"Developing thunderstorms often have strong updrafts, a zone of upward moving air, that rises very rapidly, sometimes at more than 100 mph, and can leave pilots will little time to react if it occurs directly in front of the plane," said Dan DePodwin, AccuWeather’s senior director of Forecasting Operations.

The sudden turbulence occurred over the Irrawaddy Basin in Myanmar, about 10 hours into the flight, Singapore Airlines said.

Sister revealed as online tormentor in new twist to suicide story

肥猫事件大反转

2024-05-21 浏览

Liu Jie, a 21-year-old gaming influencer known online as "Fat Cat," jumped into the Yangtze River from Chongqing's Yangtze River Bridge on the early morning of April 11.

Following his suicide, his ex-girlfriend Tan became the target of a fierce online storm.

Initially blamed for Liu's death and accused of financial exploitation, Tan was labeled a gold digger. Her name and contact details were posted online, leading to relentless harassment and online shaming.

But there was an unexpected twist to the tale last night when Chongqing police revealed that Liu's sister had orchestrated the smear.

Since April 15, using the account Keke Can't Sleep, she posted 25 videos, including WeChat screenshots and financial records between Liu and his girlfriend.

According to information she provided, her 21-year-old brother had been in an online relationship for a year and a half with 27-year-old Tan. Liu had moved to Chongqing to be with her, during which time Tan allegedly requested a total of 510,000 yuan (US$70.506) for various things such as rent, shopping, and opening a flower shop.

In Liu's sister's account of the relationship. Tan was extorting money from Liu, who made his money through gaming services. Liu often worked through the night and lived frugally. In his last WeChat status update, he said he didn't like vegetables and desired McDonald's.

Many netizens expressed their condolences by sending deliveries of burgers, milk tea, and flowers to the Yangtze River Bridge.

Topics related to Liu's death garnered billions of views on Chinese social media Weibo.

Tan became the target of waves of hate. Rumors online said Tan had only met Liu twice in their two-year relationship and that she was a lesbian, only dating Liu online to extort money from him.

"A classic gold digger," read one online comment, "she broke Liu and pushed him to his death."

However, in a dramatic reversal of the story, police published the results of a detailed investigation on May 19.

They confirmed that Liu and Tan had been in a genuine relationship since meeting through an online game in November 2021, publicly acknowledging their relationship in November 2023. They had financial exchanges and plans for their future together, with no evidence of a scam on Tan's part.

Financial records showed that from their online meeting in November 2021 until Liu's death, Liu transferred over 799,000 yuan (US$110,587) yuan to Tan, while Tan transferred over 463,000 yuan back, including amounts to Liu's family. This included 297,000 yuan to Liu, 30,000 yuan to his sister, and 136,000 yuan to his father.

Following Liu's death, Tan also returned 70,000 yuan meant for the flower shop and 66,000 yuan that Liu had willingly given her before his death.

Through mediation, Liu's parents and Tan reached a reconciliation, with Tan repaying the financial differences in their relationship.

The police investigation also found that Liu's sister continued to allege that all of Liu's earnings were spent on Tan and that she vowed to ruin Tan's reputation, encouraging online harassment.

She posted private conversations and financial records from her brother's personal social media accounts, solicited sympathy, and paid online agencies to boost online visibility, resulting in a surge in her social media followers.

Her actions led to significant harassment and threats against Tan, disrupting her life and causing chaos online, even death threats. Liu's sister later acknowledged the illegality of her actions and has apologized. Her accounts have been banned on multiple platforms.

The police also addressed those who had exploited the story for personal gain, spreading false information and inciting harassment against Tan.

Tourist groups each consisting of two foreigners or more, and organized or received by Chinese travel agencies, can enter China visa free on board cruise ships via the cruise ports in 13 Chinese cities, including Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Sanya, and others, according to the National Immigration Administration (NIA).

The tourists can stay in China for no longer than 15 days. While in China, they can visit coastal provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions as well as Beijing, according to an NIA statement.

Additionally, the NIA announced that seven cruise ports, namely Dalian, Lianyungang, Wenzhou, Zhoushan, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Beihai, have been designated as visa-free transit ports for nationals from 54 countries.

12 dead, 60 injured in India billboard collapse

印度广告牌事故造成12人死亡,60人受伤

2024-05-14 浏览

Twelve people were killed and at least 60 injured after a billboard collapsed during a fierce storm in India's financial capital Mumbai, officials said Monday.

An excavator was digging through the wreckage as rescuers raced to find any survivors after the signage collapsed at a petrol station in the city's east, trapping dozens of people underneath.

Eight bodies had already been removed from the wreckage, Gaurav Chauhan, an inspector with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), said.

Four more bodies are still buried inside the debris, he added.

"We have located them but we cannot remove them due to this petrol pump and the situation can be hazardous," he said.

Earlier, a statement from municipal authorities said that 60 people had been rescued and admitted to hospital.

The collapsed billboard measured 70 by 50 meters, according to a post on social media platform X by Mumbai's police force.

Mumbai was hit by strong winds accompanied by rain and dust storms on Thursday that uprooted trees and caused brief power outages in parts of the city, along with disruptions to the city's train network.

Indian media reports said flights were temporarily suspended at the city's international airport with at least 15 planes diverted.

Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra state, said the injured were being treated at Rajawadi Hospital.

A "high-level inquiry has been ordered into the incident," Fadnavis said in a post on X.

China, Hungary elevate ties to all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership

中国和匈牙利关于建立新时代全天候全面战略伙伴关系

2024-05-10 浏览

China and Hungary decided Thursday to elevate bilateral relations to an all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership for the new era.

The decision was announced during the talks between visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Hungary, ushering in a new and important opportunity for the development of bilateral relations, Xi said.

Elaborating on the decision during a joint press conference with Orban, Xi said he and Orban agreed that China and Hungary have always been good friends that trust and support each other as well as good partners that seek win-win cooperation over the years. It is natural for the two countries to further upgrade relations and enrich bilateral cooperation.

The two sides should take the establishment of the all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership for the new era as an opportunity to inject new and strong impetus into bilateral cooperation and create a better future for the two peoples, Xi said.

China-Hungary relations are currently at the best period in history and their comprehensive strategic partnership has maintained high-level development. With deepening political mutual trust and fruitful cooperation in various fields, the two countries have set a model for building a new type of international relations, Xi said during the talks with Orban.

Hungary is welcomed to be China's companion on its path to Chinese modernization, which will surely bring more opportunities to Hungary and other countries in the world, Xi said.

China is willing to jointly forge greater synergy in development strategies with Hungary, make good use of mechanisms such as the China-Hungary Inter-Governmental Belt and Road Cooperation Committee, promote orderly cooperation in fields including infrastructure and green energy, complete the construction of the Hungary-Serbia Railway on schedule, and actively expand cooperation in emerging areas such as clean energy and artificial intelligence, Xi said.

In order to enrich the China-Hungary all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership for the new era, the two sides are committed to enhancing synergy between the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and Hungary's "Eastern Opening" policy, said a joint statement on the establishment of the all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership for the new era released by the two countries.

Leveraging mechanisms and platforms such as the Belt and Road Cooperation Promotion Center, the two sides will pursue deeper and more substantive progress in high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, jointly ensure the safety and security and smooth progress of relevant cooperation projects between the two countries, and strive for more fruitful results in practical cooperation, the statement said.

The two sides should continue supporting the teaching of both countries' languages, Xi said during his talks with Orban.

China is willing to strengthen multilateral communication and coordination with Hungary, advocate an equal and orderly multi-polar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, safeguard international fairness and justice, promote global governance in a more just and equitable direction, and make positive efforts to build a community with a shared future for mankind, he said.

Hailing Europe as an important pole in a multi-polar world and an important partner on China's path toward Chinese modernization, Xi said it is hoped that Hungary will take the opportunity of taking on the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU) in the second half of this year to promote the steady and sound development of China-EU relations.

The cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC) has a strong internal driving force, Xi said, expressing hope that Hungary will continue to play an important role in promoting the China-CEEC cooperation to better benefit people of various countries.

For his part, Orban told Xi that his visit once again demonstrates the profound friendship and huge potential between Hungary and China, and is of great historical significance to Hungary and Hungary-China relations.

Hungary supports China in safeguarding its core interests and legitimate rights, and has adhered and will adhere to the one-China principle, said Orban.

The Hungarian government "reaffirms that there is but one China in the world, that the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing China. Hungary opposes all forms of separatist activities at breaking the unity of China," said the joint statement released Thursday.

His country does not identify with the rhetoric of so-called "overcapacity" or "de-risking." China's development is an opportunity rather than a risk for Europe, and Hungary is willing to strengthen multilateral communication and cooperation with China to jointly safeguard world peace and stability, said Orban during his talks with Xi.

The two leaders had an in-depth exchange of views on the Ukraine crisis.

Xi stressed that China has always been committed to promoting peace talks and is willing to continue working with relevant parties to make positive efforts to realize peace at an early date.

Xi arrives in Budapest for state visit to Hungary

习近平抵达布达佩斯,开始对匈牙利进行国事访问

2024-05-09 浏览

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived here Wednesday for a state visit to Hungary.

In a written speech upon his arrival, Xi said China and Hungary are good friends and good partners of mutual trust.

"I am delighted to pay a state visit to the beautiful country of Hungary at the gracious invitation of President Tamas Sulyok and Prime Minister Viktor Orban," he said, extending heartfelt greetings and best wishes to the Hungarian government and people on behalf of the government and people of China.

Noting that Hungary is known for its time-honored history and profound cultural heritage, Xi said the Hungarian people are industrious, intelligent, open, inclusive, pioneering and creative.

In recent years, the government and people of Hungary have been forging ahead with determination, making impressive progress in economic and social development, he said. "As a good friend and a comprehensive strategic partner, we in China, both the government and people, heartily rejoice over your achievements."

In 1949, Hungary was one of the first countries to recognize and establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. In 2004, the two countries decided to forge a friendly and cooperative partnership.

In 2017, the bilateral relationship was elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership, upgrading and speeding up the mutually beneficial cooperation and strengthening the popular support for traditional China-Hungary friendship, Xi noted.

In recent years, the two sides have seen frequent high-level exchanges, deepening mutual trust, fruitful outcomes in Belt and Road cooperation, vibrant people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and close coordination and collaboration in international and regional affairs, he said.

"Together, we have set a fine example of building a new type of international relations featuring mutual respect, fairness, justice and win-win cooperation," Xi said.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of China-Hungary diplomatic ties, bringing an important opportunity for the growth of bilateral relations, he said.

Xi said he looks forward to meeting with President Sulyok, Prime Minister Orban and other Hungarian leaders, and they will jointly outline a new blueprint for cooperation and development, with a view to steering the China-Hungary relationship forward in big strides and taking it to a higher level.

"I believe that no matter how the international landscape evolves, China and Hungary will always view and approach the bilateral relationship from a broad perspective and a long-term view," he said.

"Through vigorous and determined endeavors, we will work together toward the goal of building a community with a shared future for mankind, and make our due contribution to world peace, stability, development and prosperity," he added.

"I am confident that, with the two sides' concerted efforts, this visit will be a complete success and usher in an even brighter future of the China-Hungary relationship," he said.

Orban and his wife waited at Budapest Airport to welcome Xi. Hungarian Air Force sent fighter jets to escort Xi's plane after it entered the country's airspace for a state visit.
