China opposes Germany's discriminatory decision on Chinese 5G companies

2024-07-12 浏览

The Chinese Embassy in Germany on Thursday voiced strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to Germany's decision to gradually remove Chinese telecom components from its 5G networks.

Germany's Federal Ministry of the Interior announced the decision on Thursday, citing the so-called security risks.

In a statement, the Chinese embassy said such a decision is based on groundless accusations as Chinese companies, including Huawei and ZTE, have long operated in Germany in compliance with laws and regulations, making positive contributions to Germany's digitization process.

The so-called "network security risks" are just an excuse by certain countries to maintain technological hegemony and suppress competitors, it said, adding that there is no evidence indicating that these Chinese companies are a danger to any country.

Noting that China has always maintained an open attitude towards European companies like Nokia and Ericsson in its own 5G construction, the statement said that Germany's move would severely damage mutual trust and affect future China-EU cooperation in relevant fields.

"Whether Germany can handle this issue fairly and justly will be a touchstone for its own business environment," said the statement.

Germany and the European side should not demand fair competitiveness on the one hand, but on the other hand, impose discriminatory policies upon companies from another country based on groundless accusations, it emphasized.

China will take necessary measures to safeguard the legitimate interests of Chinese companies, it concluded.

Female Chinese tourist rescued after 36 hours adrift at sea in Japan

2024-07-11 浏览

A female Chinese tourist was rescued from the sea near Chiba Prefecture in Japan on Wednesday after drifting 80 kilometers at sea for 36 hours, Japan's Kyodo News reported.

The 21-year-old Chinese woman, who was wearing a swim ring, was found dehydrated but conscious, a local coast guard office said.

She had been swimming at Shirahama Ohama beach in Shizuoka Prefecture around 7:30pm on Monday with a friend during their travels. When the woman disappeared, her friend called the police.

Local police, fire departments, and the Japan Coast Guard immediately launched a search and rescue operation.

About 36 hours later, the crew of a cargo ship discovered the woman in the waters near Chiba Prefecture and contacted a nearby oil tanker. The tanker's crew members jumped into the water and rescued the woman.

She was then taken to a hospital in Yokohama City, and it was reported that she did not require hospitalization.

"She is strong, optimistic and full of hope. We're incredibly grateful that she didn't give up on herself," a friend of the woman wrote on Chinese social media.

She was discharged and is in good health, though she needs some time to fully recover. During her ordeal, she looked at the stars at night and saw mirages during the day, experiencing a journey akin to an adventure story. She never gave up, keeping her eyes on the shore and ensuring she didn't drift too far, the friend wrote.

The Chinese Embassy in Japan issued a notice on Thursday confirming the incident and reminding Chinese citizens in Japan to pay attention to water safety.

US San Diego Zoo shares first-look photos of 2 pandas from China

2024-07-10 浏览

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance on Tuesday shared first-look photos of the highly anticipated panda pair, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, as they continue settling into their new home following their arrival in the United States last month.

The panda duo, the first to enter the United States in 21 years, are acclimating well to their new home in a private habitat and will not be viewable to the public for several weeks, said the zoo in a press release.

Yun Chuan and Xin Bao arrived in California from China on June 27 for a 10-year international giant panda protection cooperation with San Diego Zoo, marking a new round of such collaboration between the two nations.

"Yun Chuan is an almost five-year-old male," said the zoo, adding that "he's identifiable by his long, slightly pointed nose and seems to be extremely comfortable whether he is exploring on the grass or climbing trees."

The zoo noted that Xin Bao is a nearly four-year-old female whose name means "precious treasure of prosperity and abundance."

"She is best recognized by her large, round face and big, fluffy ears, and she enjoys sunbathing quietly and focusing on her favorite food," the zoo added.

Over the past week, the San Diego Zoo worked closely with Chinese experts to cater to the dietary needs and preferences of the giant pandas. The teams provided a variety of fresh bamboo and even created a local adaptation of wowotou, a traditional Chinese bun also called "panda bread," said the zoo.
To help the beloved black-and-white bears adjust to their new home, the teams conducted food adaptability exercises and weight monitoring sessions. Additionally, veterinary teams from both countries are keeping a close eye on the pandas' health, tracking their weight, appetite and other health indicators daily to ensure they thrive in their new environment, according to the zoo.

San Diego Zoo, one of the most visited zoo in the country, is the first US zoo to have a cooperative conservation program with Chinese partners. Located north of downtown San Diego in Balboa Park, it is home to more than 12,000 rare and endangered animals representing over 680 species and subspecies.

The panda pair were selected from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP), which has conducted scientific research cooperation with San Diego Zoo for over 25 years, with fruitful results in the protection, breeding, and disease control of giant pandas, and related public education.

Giant pandas are one of the world's most endangered species. Nearly 1,900 pandas live in the wild, mostly in the provinces of Sichuan and Shaanxi in China, rising from 1,100 in the 1980s.

Left-wing parties alliance wins France's legislative elections, PM vows to resign

法国左翼联盟在国民议会选举中领先 总理称将递交辞呈

2024-07-08 浏览

The left-wing parties' alliance, the New Popular Front (NFP), wins the 2nd round of France's legislative elections, and is expected to hold between 175 and 205 seats in the National Assembly, according to projections published by research firm Elabe.

French President Emmanuel Macron's coalition comes in second with the possibility of getting 150 to 175 seats, while the far-right wing party and its allies would only obtain 115 to 150 seats, Elabe said in its projections.

No party would get the absolute majority of 289 seats in the 577-member French National Assembly.

Speaking after the publication of several projections confirming the win of the NFP, French left-wing head Jean-Luc Melanchon "saluted" the effort and mobilization of the French people who have voted in favor of the NFP.

"Our people have clearly avoided the worst solution for them," he said, referring to the far-ring wing party, the National Rally (RN).

"We achieved a result that we were told impossible," said Melanchon, head of left-wing party La France Insoumise.

According to him, the result of the elections is "a huge relief" for most French people. "The will of the people must be strictly respected...The defeat of the President of the Republic and his coalition is clearly confirmed," he told his supporters.

"The prime minister must resign. The president must call on the New Popular Front to govern," he said.

Former French president Francois Hollande, a member of the French Socialist Party (PS) and candidate of the New Popular Front (NFP), is elected as deputy as well following the second round.

"I considered that my duty, despite the positions I held, was to do everything to prevent the extreme right from coming to power, but also to open a path of hope," he said at a gathering.

The former French president noted that the New Popular Front (NFP) has the responsibility to "fulfill its role" at the future National Assembly.

Following the defeat of the National Rally, its president Jordan Bardella thanked the RN's supporters.

"Unfortunately, the alliances of dishonor this evening deprive the French of a policy of recovery. This evening, the electoral agreements throw France into the arms of the extreme left of Jean-Luc Melenchon," he said.

"The National Rally embodies more than ever the only alternation and will stand alongside the French people. We do not want power for power's sake but to return it to the French," the 28-year-old far-right wing lead noted.

Although the National Rally failed to become the largest party in the National Assembly, it still would have more seats than in the previous assembly.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced Sunday night to submit his resignation to French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, following the defeat of Macron's centrist coalition in the elections.

"This evening, the political group that I represented in this campaign, has achieved three times more than the seats predicted in the past weeks, but does not have a majority," Attal said in a televised speech.

"Being faithful to the republican tradition and in accordance with my principles, I will submit my resignation tomorrow morning to the President of the Republic," he said.

Saying that the French people may feel a form of "uncertainty" about the future following the results of the legislative elections, Attal stressed that he would "obviously" assume his role as prime minister for as long as it requires, given that France is to hold the Olympics Games in three weeks.

Although Attal would submit his resignation to Macron on Monday, the latter doesn't have to accept it immediately.

Official provisional results are expected to be published by the French interior ministry late Sunday night or early Monday morning.

Xi kicks off state visit to Tajikistan, eyeing new heights in bilateral cooperation

2024-07-05 浏览

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived here on Thursday night, commencing his state visit to Tajikistan following a busy schedule at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon welcomed Xi at the Dushanbe International Airport with a grand ceremony, where around 1,500 Tajik youths in traditional attire dancing and waving the national flags of China and Tajikistan.

Upon arrival, Xi expressed his anticipation for discussions with Rahmon to formulate new plans and arrangements for the development of China-Tajikistan relations in light of the new circumstances.

Xi said with concerted efforts from both countries, this visit is expected to be a complete success, elevating all-round cooperation between China and Tajikistan to new heights.

President Xi's state visit to Tajikistan will inject new and strong momentum into developing and strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, Rahmon told Xinhua in a recent interview.

Rahmon also said the China-Tajikistan relations have entered a new historical stage, opening up new prospects for extensive cooperation.

Recent years have seen close interactions between the two heads of state. During Xi's visit to Tajikistan in 2019, he was awarded the Order of the Crown from Rahmon in Dushanbe. Both countries pledged to build a China-Tajikistan development community and security community.

In May 2023, during the China-Central Asia Summit, the two leaders jointly announced the building of a China-Tajikistan community with a shared future featuring everlasting friendship, solidarity and mutual benefit.

"These initiatives and joint decisions to create a community have already yielded tangible results," said Abdugaffor Abdujabbor, former head of the International Relations Department of Tajikistan's Culture Ministry.

Abdujabbor highlighted two China-assisted edifices on Rudaki Avenue, the main thoroughfare of Dushanbe: the government building and the Parliament building, referring to them as new landmarks of the capital.

"This is the fruit of the friendship between our two leaders," he told Xinhua. "They share a great sympathy, pure friendship, and mutual understanding."

"Xi's words are matched by his actions; what he said is always felt in practice," he added.

Tajikistan is a neighbor of China. Trade between China and Tajikistan doubled from 2013 to 2023. China has become the largest source of investment in Tajikistan and its second-largest trading partner.

Tajikistan was among the first countries to support the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) proposed by Xi in 2013 and sign related cooperation agreements with China. Under the BRI framework, a series of China-Tajikistan cooperation and aid projects have been implemented in key areas such as infrastructure, metallurgy, energy, cement, and the cotton textile industry.

"The space for practical cooperation between China and Tajikistan is broad, and the prospects are promising," Chinese Ambassador to Tajikistan Ji Shumin told Xinhua.

The two countries firmly support each other on issues concerning their core interests, Ji said. Both countries have suffered from the "three evil forces" of terrorism, extremism, and separatism and advocate for a common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security concept, he added.

On the streets of Dushanbe, many young people can speak Chinese, and it's common to hear locals greeting visitors from China with "Nihao," which means "hello" in Mandarin.

"In Tajikistan, there has been a noticeable increasing interest in China, in the study of the Chinese experience of modernization, Chinese culture and language," said Abdurakhim Juraev, professor at the Tajik State University of Law, Business and Politics in Khujand.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of Tajik students attending Confucius Institutes in their country or studying in China. Take the Confucius Institute at the Tajik National University as an example. Since its establishment in August 2008, the institute has trained nearly 39,000 Chinese language learners.

The Luban Workshop in Tajikistan, co-founded by China's Tianjin Urban Construction Management and Vocation Technology College and Tajik Technical University, has been training skilled professionals, contributing to Tajikistan's vocational education, industrialization, and modernization efforts.

The visit of President Xi, said Juraev, will give new impetus to cooperation between the two countries and will contribute to the overall prosperity of Central Asia.

Xi urges China, Russia to continue strengthening alignment of development strategies

2024-07-04 浏览

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday urged China and Russia to continue to strengthen the alignment of development strategies and international strategic coordination.

Xi made the remarks when meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of the 24th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Astana.

He noted that President Putin paid a successful state visit to China this May, saying that the two sides are working together to make plans and arrangements for the future development of bilateral relations at the important historical juncture of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Russia.

Facing an international situation fraught with turbulence and changes, the two countries should keep upholding the original aspiration of lasting friendship, and sticking to the determination of benefiting the people, Xi said.

He urged China and Russia to continuously conserve the unique value in China-Russia relations, and explore the internal driving force of bilateral cooperation, saying that the two countries should also make new efforts to safeguard their legitimate rights and interests and safeguard the basic norms governing international relations.

China supports Russia in fulfilling its responsibilities as BRICS chair, uniting the "Global South," preventing a "new Cold War" and opposing illegal unilateral sanctions and hegemonism, he said.

Noting that the SCO Astana summit will be held on Thursday, Xi said the Chinese side looks forward to working with Russia and other member states to promote the steady and long-term development of the SCO and build an even closer SCO community with a shared future.

China and Russia, Xi said, should continue to strengthen comprehensive strategic coordination, oppose external interference and jointly safeguard regional tranquility and stability.

For his part, Putin thanked Xi for warmly receiving him on his state visit to China in May, recalling that they celebrated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Russia and China and made plans for the future development of Russia-China relations.

At present, Russia-China relations are at the highest level in history, Putin said, adding that the two sides respect each other, and treat each other with equality and mutual benefit.

He also said that Russia-China relations feature non-alignment and do not target at any third party, which conforms to the well-being of the two peoples.

Russia, he said, supports China in safeguarding its core interests and legitimate rights and interests, and opposes external interference in China's internal affairs and the South China Sea issue.

Noting that China will soon take over the rotating presidency of the SCO, he said Russia will fully support China's work and work with other member states to continuously enhance the international influence of the organization, safeguard regional peace and security, and promote the development of the international system in a more just and equitable direction.

As the rotating chair of BRICS this year, Russia looks forward to strengthening communication and coordination with China on BRICS cooperation, he added.

The two heads of state also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.

Xi stressed that China always stands on the right side of history, adheres to promoting peace talks, and is willing to continue to make positive efforts for the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis and other regional hotspot issues.

Trump's sentencing date in hush money case postponed to September

2024-07-03 浏览

The sentencing date for former US President Donald Trump in the hush money case was postponed on Tuesday to September 18 from July 11, following the US Supreme Court's decision on presidential immunity.

Trump's attorneys Todd Blanche and Emil Bove on Monday sought leave to file a motion to set aside a jury's verdict reached on May 30, based on the Supreme Court's latest decision.

Trump's attorneys in a letter to Juan M. Merchan, a judge from New York County Supreme Court, said the verdicts in the hush money case violate the presidential immunity doctrine and create grave risks of "an Executive Branch that cannibalizes itself."

Prosecutors from Manhattan District Attorney's Office said on Tuesday that they don't oppose the defendant's request for leave to file and his putative request to adjourn sentencing though they believe the defendant's arguments have no merits.

The prosecutors request a deadline of July 24 to file, which is two weeks after the defendant's requested deadline of July 10.

In a letter to the prosecutors and defedant's attorneys, Judge Merchan said he would rule on Trump's motion to set aside a jury's verdict on September 6 and he would deliver a sentencing on September 18 if a sentence is still necessary.

The US Supreme Court on Monday ruled that Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for the 2024 US presidential election, has some immunity from criminal charges for trying to reverse the 2020 election results.

Trump praised the Supreme Court's ruling, claiming it a "big win for our constitution and democracy."

A jury in New York in late May found Trump guilty of all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in a bid to hide hush money payment to a porn star in 2016.
