| China's National Health Commission has released its first set of guidelines aimed at standardizing the diagnosis and treatment of obesity.
Over past years, China has witnessed an upward trend in the morbidity rate of its overweight and obese population, according to the guidelines issued by the commission. As an independent disease and a major causative factor for multiple chronic diseases, obesity has become a major public health issue in China, ranking as the sixth leading risk factor for death and disability in the country, the guidelines say. They provide detailed guidance and regulations in the areas of clinical nutrition, medication therapy, surgical treatment, behavioral and psychological intervention, and exercise intervention for obesity, ensuring the safety and quality of medical care while protecting the health rights of patients, said Zhang Zhongtao, director of the guideline drafting committee and deputy head of Beijing Friendship Hospital. Experts emphasize that most overweight and obese cases are caused by unhealthy lifestyles. The fundamental solution is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, which includes a balanced diet and appropriate exercise to keep weight within a healthy range. |

China expels Japanese vessel for unlawfully entering waters of Diaoyu Dao

| The China Coast Guard (CCG) said on Thursday that they expelled a Japanese fishing vessel that unlawfully entered the waters of Diaoyu Dao on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In the process, the CCG implemented necessary control measures and issued warnings to send the Japanese vessel away, said Liu Dejun, a spokesperson of the CCG. Noting that Diaoyu Dao and its affiliated islands have all along been China's territory, the CCG urged the Japanese side to cease all illegitimate activities in these waters. It also vowed to continue law enforcement operations in waters under China's jurisdiction in accordance with the law to safeguard national sovereignty, security and maritime rights and interests. |

Tuesday marks the 10th anniversary of the symposium held in Beijing, where Xi, also Chinese president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, addressed some of the country's most renowned writers and artists at the time. Stressing the significance of literature and art for the Party and the people, Xi said they play an indispensable role in realizing the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation. Xi urged writers and artists to follow a people-centered approach in literature and art creation and produce more outstanding works that disseminate contemporary Chinese values, embody Chinese culture and reflect the Chinese people's aesthetic pursuit. He stressed the importance of nurturing a great number of writers and artists of both moral and artistic stature as well as a large contingent of talented personnel in the field of literature and art. "Socialist literature and art is, in essence, the literature and art of the people," he said in the speech, calling on writers and artists to put the social benefits of their works before everything else. Literary and artistic works should not be the "slaves" of the market and should not bear "the stench of money," Xi added. | A pair of giant pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao, arrived at Washington, DC, on Tuesday, after an approximately 19-hour trans-Pacific trip from Sichuan Province in southwest China.
A dedicated "FedEx Panda Express" Boeing 777F aircraft landed at the Dulles International Airport near Washington, DC, at around 10am local time (2pm GMT). The pandas were loaded onto trucks and were sent to the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI). The three-year-old pandas will make their new home at the zoo, as part of a 10-year international giant panda protection cooperation program. "Our team has worked tirelessly to prepare for the pandas' arrival, and we're thrilled to welcome Bao Li and Qing Bao to Washington, DC.," Brandie Smith, NZCBI's John and Adrienne Mars director, said in a statement. "I am appreciative of our Chinese colleagues for our collaborative conservation and research efforts, to FedEx for providing them with safe transportation and to our donors and members whose philanthropic contributions make our giant panda conservation program possible," said Smith. Bao Li, male, whose name means "treasure" and "energy" in Chinese, was born in August 2021. He shares a special bond with the zoo, as he is the son of Bao Bao and the grandson of Tian Tian and Mei Xiang — all former residents of the zoo. Qing Bao, female, whose name means "green" and "treasure" in Chinese, was born in September 2021. Per standard procedure, the pandas will be quarantined in the panda house for a minimum of 30 days, according to the zoo. This is the second time this year that China has sent giant pandas to the United States. Two giant pandas, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, landed in California from China on June 27, and made their public debut on August 9. |

China releases space science development program for 2024-2050 Xinhua

| China unveiled a national mid and long-term development program for space science on Tuesday, which will guide the country's planning of space science missions and space research from 2024 to 2050.
The program, the first of its kind at the national level, was jointly released by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the China National Space Administration and the China Manned Space Agency at a press conference held by the State Council Information Office. The program outlines the development goals of China's space science, including 17 priority areas under five key scientific themes, as well as a three-phase roadmap. The five key scientific themes include the extreme universe, space-time ripples, panoramic view of Sun-Earth, habitable planets, and biological and physical sciences in space, Ding Chibiao, vice president of the CAS, said at the press conference. The theme of extreme universe focuses on exploring the origin and evolution of the universe, revealing the physical laws under extreme cosmic conditions. The priority areas range from dark matter and extreme universe to the universe's origin and evolution, as well as the detection of cosmic baryonic matter, according to the program. The theme of space-time ripples centers on detecting medium to low-frequency gravitational waves and primordial gravitational waves, with the goal of uncovering the nature of gravity and space-time. The priority area within this theme is space-based gravitational wave detection, Ding said. The Sun-Earth panoramic view theme involves the exploration of the sun, the Earth, and the heliosphere to unravel the physical processes and laws governing the complex interactions within the Sun-Earth system. Priority areas include Earth's cycle systems, comprehensive observations of the Earth-Moon, space weather observation, three-dimensional solar exploration, and heliosphere exploration, according to the program. Scientists will also explore the habitability of celestial bodies in the solar system and exoplanets, as well as search for extraterrestrial life. Key areas in the subject cover sustainable development, the origin and evolution of the solar system, characterization of planetary atmospheres, the search for extraterrestrial life, and exoplanet detection. The theme of biological and physical sciences in space seeks to reveal the laws of matter movement and life activities under space conditions to deepen the understanding of fundamental physics, such as quantum mechanics and general relativity. Priority areas encompass microgravity science, quantum mechanics and general relativity, and space life sciences, Ding added. The program also outlines a roadmap for the development of space science in China through 2050. In the first phase, leading up to 2027, China will focus on the space station operation, implementing the manned lunar exploration project, and the fourth phase of its lunar exploration program as well as the planetary exploration project. Five to eight space science satellite missions will be approved during the period, according to the program. The international lunar research station initiated by China will be constructed during the second phase from 2028 to 2035, and approximately 15 scientific satellite missions will be carried out during this period. In the third phase from 2036 to 2050, China will launch over 30 space science missions. |

SpaceX launched Starship at about 8:25am Central Time (1:25pm GMT) from its Starbase facility near Brownsville, US state of Texas. The rocket's "Super Heavy" booster returned to land several minutes after launch. The company used the arms of its launch tower to catch the booster, a major milestone toward SpaceX's goal of making Starship a fully reusable rocket system. Starship spacecraft traveled a similar trajectory in space as in its previous flight test, re-entered the Earth's atmosphere and splashed down in the Indian Ocean. SpaceX's Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket, collectively referred to as Starship, represent a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond. |
