China welcomes more US companies to invest in China

中国欢迎美国公司来中国投资

2023-09-27 浏览

Chinese Vice President Han Zheng Tuesday met with former US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson in Beijing, saying China welcomes more US companies to invest and do business in China to share development opportunities.

Noting China-US relations are the most important bilateral relations in the world today, Han said the two countries, one being the biggest developing country and the other the biggest developed country, should enhance mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas, push forward the world's economic recovery together, and address global challenges.

Han said China always follows the guiding principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation in dealing with relations with the United States. It is hoped that the US side could work with China to bring the bilateral ties back to the track of sound and steady growth.

Since the beginning of this year, China's economy has kept on a general rebound track. The Chinese side will continue to optimize economic structures, deepen reform and opening up, and achieve high-quality development, said Han.

"We welcome more US companies to invest and do business in China to share development opportunities together," Han added.

For his part, Paulson said he has confidence in the prospects of China's economic development. The US-China relations have an important impact on the world. The two countries should maintain communication and dialogue, strengthen people-to-people exchanges and economic and trade cooperation, and jointly cope with global challenges such as climate change.

Paulson also expressed willingness to continue playing a positive role in promoting the steady development of US-China relations.

Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, met with a delegation led by Paulson on the same day.

Wang said the nosedive of China-US relations does not meet the interests of the two peoples, the expectations of the international community, and the trend of the times. It is hoped that the United States will return to the rational and pragmatic track in its China policy, take concrete actions to lengthen the positive list and shorten the negative list, and work with China to explore ways of peaceful coexistence as two major countries.

Paulson welcomed the recent resumption and maintenance of dialogue between the United States and China, adding the two sides should indeed find the right way to get along with each other, build mutual trust, and push for the steady improvement of US-China relations.

US experts carry out 2nd pig-to-human heart transplant

美国专家实行第二次将猪的心脏移植到人身上

2023-09-25 浏览

A 58-year-old man has become the world's second patient to receive a transplant of a genetically modified pig heart, the latest milestone in a growing field of medical research.

Transplanting animal organs into humans, called xenotransplantation, could offer a solution to the chronic shortage of human organ donations. More than 100,000 Americans are currently on waiting lists for organ transplants.

Both heart procedures were carried out by experts from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, with the first patient dying two months after his transplant last year due to "a multitude of factors including his poor state of health" prior to the operation, the university said in a statement on Friday.

The latest operation took place on Wednesday, with patient Lawrence Faucette ineligible for a donated human heart due to pre-existing vascular disease and internal bleeding complications.

Without the experimental transplant, the father of two and Navy veteran was facing near-certain heart failure.

"My only real hope left is to go with the pig heart, the xenotransplant," Faucette was quoted as saying prior to the procedure. "At least now I have hope, and I have a chance."

Following the transplant, Faucette was breathing on his own and the new heart was functioning well "without any assistance from supportive devices," the university said.

He was taking conventional anti-rejection drugs as well as receiving a new antibody therapy to prevent his body from damaging or rejecting the new organ.

Xenotransplants are challenging because the patient's immune system will attack the foreign organ. Scientists are trying to circumvent the problem by using organs from genetically modified pigs.

In the past few years, doctors have transplanted kidneys from genetically modified pigs into brain-dead patients.

The NYU Langone Hospital Transplant Institute in New York announced this month that a pig kidney transplanted into a brain-dead patient had functioned for a record-breaking 61 days.

Early xenotransplantation research focused on harvesting organs from primates — for example, a baboon heart was transplanted into a newborn known as "Baby Fae" in 1984, but she survived only 20 days.

Current efforts focus on pigs, which are thought to be ideal donors for humans because of their organ size, their rapid growth and large litters, and the fact they are already raised as a food source.

Russia to safeguard int'l fairness, justice with China, says Putin

普京称,俄罗斯将与中国一起维护国际公平与公正

2023-09-21 浏览

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday said his country is willing to cooperate with China to resist unipolar hegemony and bloc confrontation, and safeguard international fairness and justice.

Putin made the remarks when meeting with Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs in St. Petersburg.

Putin said that Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Russia in March this year marked a new era in the relationship between the two countries. Since then, important agreements reached between the two sides have been steadily implemented, resulting in positive outcomes in various fields such as economic and trade cooperation, cultural exchanges, and sports.

He said Russia has overcome the impact of unilateral sanctions imposed by Western countries and its economy has started to recover and function normally this year, adding that Russia is ready to strengthen planning and deepen practical cooperation with China.

Putin stressed that Russia highly appreciates and firmly supports the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), opposes distortions and smears against the BRI, and is willing to enhance alignment between the Eurasian Economic Union and the BRI to promote regional integration.

Putin stated that the evolution of the current international situation fully validates President Xi's strategic assessment that the world is undergoing major changes unseen in a century. Through the collective efforts of Russia, China and other parties, the BRICS successfully expanded membership this year, taking BRICS cooperation to a new level. Russia is willing to maintain close coordination with China within multilateral frameworks such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the BRICS mechanism, to resist unipolar hegemony and bloc confrontation, and to safeguard international fairness and justice.

Wang, for his part, said the heads of state of the two countries had a successful meeting this year, jointly outlining a new blueprint for the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination in the new era. This has provided a clear direction and injected strong momentum for the further development of bilateral relations.

Wang noted that during his current visit, he had comprehensive discussions with Nikolai Patrushev, secretary of Russia's Security Council, and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on cooperation in various fields between the two countries.

Wang said China is willing to work together with Russia, taking the important consensus reached by the heads of state of the two countries as the fundamental guideline, to enhance strategic mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation, and further consolidate the public opinion and social foundation of friendship between China and Russia.

He said that faced with a complex international situation, the world is rapidly moving toward multipolarity, economic globalization is progressing against headwinds, unilateral actions are unsustainable, and hegemonism is not popular. As permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and Russia bear important responsibilities for promoting global development and progress. Both sides need to strengthen their multilateral strategic cooperation, protect their legitimate rights and interests, and make new efforts to promote the international order toward fairness and justice.

The two sides also exchanged views on the current international and regional situation. On the Ukraine issue, Putin reiterated Russia's willingness to resolve it through dialogue and negotiation.

During his visit to Russia, Wang Yi also co-chaired the 18th round of China-Russia strategic security consultation, attended a meeting between high representatives of China, Russia and Mongolia on security issues, and met separately with Lavrov and Jadamba Enkhbayar, secretary of the Mongolian National Security Council.

Escaped crocodiles in south Chinese city captured

中国南方某城市逃跑的鳄鱼已被抓住

2023-09-20 浏览

All 69 crocodiles that escaped a flooded farm in south China's Guangdong Province have been captured and no crocodile attacks have been reported so far, local authorities said on Wednesday.

The crocodiles escaped from a commercial crocodile farm in the city of Maoming after Typhoon Haikui triggered flooding in the area earlier this month. The local government mobilized more than 6,600 people in response to the incident.

By Saturday, 40 crocodiles had been found on the farm, while 29 others had been retrieved from neighboring ponds or flooded fields.

The farm owner told police that 71 Siamese crocodiles, including two juveniles, used to live on the farm. The owner said two crocodiles had died before the escape occurred.

Typhoon Haikui and the monsoon caused torrential rain in many cities and counties in the Pearl River Delta region early this month, resulting in urban flooding, landslides, road closures and other hazardous situations.

Wang Yi, Chinese foreign minister and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said on Monday that as major countries in the world and permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and Russia bear important responsibilities for maintaining global strategic stability and promoting world development and progress.

In the face of rising unilateralism, hegemonism and bloc confrontations, China and Russia should adhere to true multilateralism, Wang said.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said that the two countries should also conform to the trend of the times, shoulder responsibility as major countries, and fulfill due international obligations.

He also called on the two sides to promote multipolarity in the world and advance the development of global governance in a fairer and more equitable direction through strengthened strategic coordination.

Wang made the remarks while meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Hunter Biden indicted on federal firearms charges

亨特·拜登因联邦枪支指控被起诉

2023-09-15 浏览

US President Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, was indicted Thursday on federal firearms charges after a planned plea deal collapsed.

Hunter Biden, 53, was accused of concealing his drug use during a gun purchase in October 2018, according to the indictment filed in a federal court in Delaware.

Three criminal counts of charges are related to Hunter Biden's alleged false statements in the purchase of a firearm and illegal gun possession. He will face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

The indictment came after a planned plea deal between Hunter Biden's lawyer and US Attorney and special counsel David Weiss, a Republican appointee, collapsed in July.

Hunter Biden has also been under investigation for his foreign business dealings.

The legal troubles that Hunter Biden faces have cast a shadow over his father's reelection campaign, as congressional Republicans are seeking to connect the Democratic president to alleged wrongdoing by his son in an impeachment inquiry opened two days ago.

US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said on Tuesday that the House Oversight Committee's investigation had found a "culture of corruption" around the Biden family as Republicans probed the business dealings of Hunter Biden, from before the president took office in 2021.

"These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption, and they warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives," McCarthy said, adding that he had directed House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Biden.

NASA registers summer 2023 as hottest on record

NASA标记2023年夏天为最热的记录

2023-09-15 浏览

The summer of 2023 was Earth's hottest since global records began in 1880, NASA announced on Thursday.

The months of June, July, and August combined were 0.41 degrees Fahrenheit (0.23 degrees Celsius) warmer than any other summer in NASA's record, and 2.1 degrees Fahrenheit (1.2 Celsius) warmer than the average summer between 1951 and 1980, according to scientists at NASA's Goddard Institute of Space Studies in New York.

NASA assembles its temperature record from surface air temperature data acquired by tens of thousands of meteorological stations, as well as sea surface temperature data from ship- and buoy-based instruments.

The new record comes as exceptional heat swept across much of the world, exacerbating deadly wildfires in Canada and Hawaii, and searing heat waves in vast regions in the world.

"Exceptionally high sea surface temperatures, fueled in part by the return of El Nino, were largely responsible for the summer's record warmth," said Josh Willis, climate scientist and oceanographer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.

El Nino is a natural climate phenomenon characterized by warmer than normal sea surface temperatures and higher sea levels in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.

The record-setting summer of 2023 continues a long-term trend of warming, said NASA.

Italian version of book on CPC history published in Italy

中国共产党史书籍意大利文版在意大利首发

2023-09-14 浏览

The Italian version of a book on the history of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has been published in Italy, enabling Italian readers to better understand the CPC's century-long history and ruling philosophy.

The book "La lunga marcia del Partito Comunista Cinese," or "The Long March of the Communist Party of China," was recently published in Italian by the Italian political-cultural association Marx21.

The CPC was founded in July 1921 and has evolved from a fledgling party with 50-odd members into the world's largest governing party, boasting a membership of over 98 million individuals.

At an event in Rome focusing on the release of the book on Wednesday, Chai Fangguo, deputy head of the Institute of Party History and Literature of the CPC Central Committee, briefed the content of the book to the audience.

Chai, also head of China's Central Compilation and Translation Bureau, elaborated on the CPC's history, achievements and valuable experience in its century-long development.

The history of the CPC is a key to understanding the party itself, Chinese Ambassador to Italy Jia Guide said, stressing the crucial role the book plays for Italian readers to see a genuine, comprehensive and vivid picture of the CPC.

Mauro Alboresi, national secretary of the Italian Communist Party, and Alberto Lombardo, general secretary of the Communist Party (Italy), attended the event.

Ancient Chinese porcelain stolen from German museum

中国古代瓷器在德国博物馆被盗

2023-09-14 浏览

Nine pieces of historic Chinese porcelain worth around a million euros (US$1.1 million) were stolen from a museum in Cologne overnight, authorities in the German city said on Wednesday.

"Unknown persons" managed to break into the Museum of East Asian Art through a window and steal the pieces from display cases, according to police.

Nine items taken date from the 16th to the 19th century, city authorities said in a statement.

The pieces include two vases and a bowl from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and several items dating back to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912).

Some of them were part of the museum's founding collection.

Since the stolen items are well documented and easily identifiable, museum director Shao-Lan Hertel said she was hopeful they will eventually find their way back.

Stefan Charles, the city councillor for arts and culture, announced a review of the museum's security.

US House speaker calls for impeachment inquiry into Biden

美众议院议长宣布将对拜登发起弹劾调查

2023-09-13 浏览

US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, on Tuesday called for opening an impeachment inquiry into Democratic President Joe Biden, citing allegations of corruption.

"I am directing our House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden," McCarthy told reporters at the Capitol.

McCarthy said the House Oversight Committee's investigation has found a "culture of corruption" around the Biden family as Republicans probe the business dealings of his son, Hunter Biden, from before the president took office in 2021.

"These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption, and they warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives," he said.

The Republican leader has been under pressure from his party's right flank for months to open an impeachment inquiry into the 80-year-old president, who is running for reelection in 2024.

Some Republicans on far right even have threatened to oust McCarthy from his speakership if he does not move swiftly enough on such a probe.

The White House and Democratic lawmakers immediately denounced the impeachment push as politically motivated.

"House Republicans have been investigating the president for 9 months, and they've turned up no evidence of wrongdoing," White House spokesman Ian Sams said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"The illegitimate impeachment inquiry launched by Extreme MAGA Republicans is regrettable, reckless and reprehensible. It is a political revenge tour that lacks any factual or constitutional basis," House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said on social media. "Democrats will defend the truth and fight right-wing extremists at every turn."

The impeachment push also came as former President Donald Trump, who was twice impeached by the House but acquitted by the Senate, faces four separate criminal indictments while running for his party's 2024 presidential nomination to face Biden.

"This is a transparent effort to boost Donald Trump's campaign by establishing a false moral equivalency between Trump — the four time —indicted former president" and Biden, who faces "zero evidence of wrongdoing whatsoever," said Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.

An inquiry is a step toward impeachment. A spokesperson for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said on Tuesday that the House is not expected to vote on the impeachment inquiry.

According to The Hill, if McCarthy does try to move forward with a formal House vote, it will be tricky.

McCarthy is already facing resistance to the idea of an impeachment inquiry from a number of moderates, putting into question whether he would have the votes to launch the probe, the report said.

With Democrats expected to oppose the effort, McCarthy can only afford to lose a small number of Republican votes in the slim GOP majority, it said.
