Death Toll Rises in HK Fire, Search Continues for Missing

香港火灾死亡人数上升,失踪者的搜寻仍在继续

2025-11-28 浏览

Hong Kong authorities said the death toll from the city's deadliest fire in more than 100 years has risen to at least 94, with 12 of about 50 hospitalized people in critical condition. The inferno that engulfed the eight-block Wang Fuk Court public housing complex in the Tai Po district took about 30 hours to fully contain, leaving one fireman dead and 11 others injured. The South China Morning Post said rescue efforts are continuing to find missing people. The fire apparently started in bamboo scaffolding on building facades and spread quickly because of flammable netting and foam material used in the renovation work. A criminal investigation has begun, with three people – two directors and a consultant from the construction contractor – initially arrested on charges of manslaughter.

The residential complex, built in 1983, was undergoing a HK$300 million (US$39 million) upgrade, led by Prestige Construction & Engineering. The complex contained 1,984 apartments in eight blocks, each 31 stories high. The renovation, which involved façade upgrades, structural repairs and waterproofing work, began almost two years ago and was scheduled to be completed by mid-2026.

Asia Dominates UN List of World's Most Populous Cities

亚洲城市几乎占据联合国全球人口最多城市榜单

Jakarta has overtaken Tokyo as the world's most populous city, the Guardian reported, citing a new report from the UN. The Indonesian capital is home to 42 million people, followed by the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka with 37 million, and Japan's capital slipping to third with 33 million. Nine of the world's most populated cities are in Asia, also including New Delhi, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Manila, Kolkata and Seoul. The only non-Asian city on the list is Cairo. The UN Department of Economic, which publishes the annual World Urbanization Prospects report, is using a new methodology to more accurately define and standardize what constitutes an urban area. The report also said that the number of urban dwellers as a percentage of the world's population has risen to half from 20 percent in 1950. It put 2025 global population at 8.2 billion.

Fire engulfed seven of eight high-rise residential buildings at a public housing complex in Hong Kong's Tai Po district on Wednesday afternoon, killing 44 people by now, according to a CCTV report on 8:00 am. According to various media reports, the fire left one firefighter and at least 43 other people dead, 44 hospitalized in serious condition, and about 280 missing. Firefighters were still fighting the fire as dawn broke on Thursday, with blazes in four blocks contained. Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee called the fire a "massive catastrophe." It's believed to have started in bamboo scaffolding erected around building facades as part of a major renovation project. The 31-story buildings housed 4,600 lower-income people as part of the city's subsidized housing program. Three men were arrested by police for alleged manslaughter in connection with the fire, but no details were immediately available.

OpenAI Sees 220 Million Paying ChatGPT Users by 2030

OpenAI 预计到 2030 年 ChatGPT 付费用户将达 2.2 亿

2025-11-27 浏览

US-based OpenAI said it expects about 220 million of ChatGPT's projected 2.6 billion weekly users to pay for the service by 2030, positioning the chatbot among the world's largest subscription platforms, The Information reported. As of July, around 35 million users subscribed to ChatGPT's paid tiers, which are priced at between US$20-US$200. The projected surge in paying users comes as the company faces rising costs. OpenAI's annualized revenue run rate is expected to reach about US$20 billion by year-end, but losses are also mounting due to the high costs of AI model training and the infrastructure required to operate ChatGPT. The company reportedly generated US$4.3 billion in revenue in the first half of 2025 but burned through US$2.5 billion in the same period.

Progress Reported in Talks to End War in Ukraine

乌克兰结束战争的谈判取得进展

2025-11-26 浏览

Ukraine said it has reached a "common understanding" with the US during talks in Genera on a peace deal aimed at ending the nearly four-year war with Russia. US President Donald Trump said his original 28-point peace plan, which was heavily weighted in Moscow's favor, "has been fine-tuned, with additional input from both sides." He said the revised plan will be presented to Russia, where its reception is unclear. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that while Moscow accepted the original plan, its support may be different under substantial changes. It's known that some key elements of the original plan have been dropped, including a requirement that Kiev renounce any possible membership in NATO and reduce the size of its military. The status of territory claimed by both Ukraine and Russia, and Western security guarantees for Ukraine remain sticking points. European leaders backing Ukraine remained skeptical. French President Emmanuel Macron said he sees "no Russian will for a ceasefire," while the UK said there is "a long way to go – a tough road ahead."

US Retail Sales Grow Slower Than Expected

美国零售销售增长低于预期

2025-11-26 浏览

US retail sales increased a smaller-than-expected 0.2 percent in September from August, the Commerce Department said in report delayed by the 43-day government shutdown. The data were reinforced by a survey from the Conference Board showing consumer confidence sagged to a seven-month low in November, with fewer households planning to buy big-ticket items over the next six months. Economists cited the Trump administration's global duties on imports, which have raised consumer prices. Consumer spending habits comes into focus this time of year as the Christmas shopping season begins. With consumer spending weak, unemployment rising and inflation tame, bets on the Federal Reserve cutting rates at its December meeting have increased.
