California sues Trump administration over 'unlawful tariffs'
加州起诉特朗普政府,要求停止其“非法关税”
California governor Gavin Newsom announced on Wednesday that the western US state which has the largest economy in the nation is suing the Trump administration over the President's sweeping "unlawful tariffs" on international trading partners.
"President Trump's unlawful tariffs are wreaking chaos on California families, businesses, and our economy - driving up prices and threatening jobs," Newsom said in a statement, adding that "We're standing up for American families who can't afford to let the chaos continue." "Donald Trump does not have the authority to impose these destructive and chaotic tariffs. America stands to lose too much," said the governor in a post on X platform. "We're taking him to court," said the governor. "California is the largest manufacturing state in our union, one of the largest trading partners around the globe. No state will be impacted more than the state of California as it relates to the unilateral authority that's been asserted by the Trump administration to impose the largest tax increases in modern American history," he noted. Newsom pointed out that "In America, forty percent of goods movements in this country come through two ports of entry in California. About 50 percent of that from China itself." In the lawsuit, expected to be filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, California officials will argue that the law, known as the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which Trump cited to impose the tariffs, does not grant him the ability to unilaterally adopt those tariffs. California, also the most populated US state, is the first state in the nation to sue Trump administration on tariffs. The Golden State is the largest importer among all US states, with more than 675 billion US dollars in two-way trade supporting millions of jobs throughout the state. Mexico, Canada and China are California's top three export destinations, buying nearly 67 billion dollars in California exports, which was over one-third of the state's 183 billion dollars in exported goods in 2024, according to the data released by the governor's office. |

Xi calls on China, Vietnam to jointly oppose power politics, unilateralism
习近平称中越需联合反对霸权政治,单边主义
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday urged China and Vietnam to jointly oppose power politics and unilateralism when meeting with Vietnamese President Luong Cuong during his state visit to Vietnam.
Xi extended warm congratulations on the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), the 80th anniversary of the founding of Vietnam and the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South. Noting that this year marks the 75th anniversary of China-Vietnam diplomatic ties and the China-Vietnam Year of People-to-People Exchanges, Xi said over the past 75 years, China-Vietnam relations have evolved from the traditional friendship featuring "camaraderie plus brotherhood" to a community with a shared future that carries strategic significance, setting a good example of friendly mutual assistance, solidarity and cooperation between countries. Standing at a new historical starting point, China is ready to work with Vietnam in line with the overarching goals characterized by "six mores" to strengthen strategic communication, enhance solidarity and coordination, and join hands in advancing their respective modernization processes, so as to write a new chapter of unity, self-strengthening, mutual benefit and win-win results among socialist countries, and constantly demonstrate the regional and global influence of the China-Vietnam community with a shared future. Xi called on China and Vietnam to respond to the external uncertainties with friendly cooperation and socialist strengths, and propel the ship of the China-Vietnam community with a shared future to sail along the right waterway. Xi said that politically, the two countries should steer the course forward steadily, maintain high-level strategic communication, strengthen mutual learning on party and state governance, jointly improve the two parties' leadership capability, and work together to ensure the steady development of their respective socialist paths. On security, the two countries should forge an anchor of solidarity, and take the upgrade of the "3+3" strategic dialogue on diplomacy, defense and public security as an opportunity to continue to deepen security cooperation on defense and law enforcement, Xi said. China supports Vietnam in preparing for the 14th National Congress of the CPV and safeguarding its national sovereignty, security and development interests, he added. Economically, the two countries should keep a firm grip on the oars of cooperation, create greater synergy between development strategies, and implement well the cooperation plan on synergizing the Belt and Road Initiative and the Two Corridors and One Economic Circle strategy. The two sides should deepen multidimensional connectivity in railways, highways and aviation, ensure stable and unimpeded industrial and supply chains, expand cooperation in emerging fields such as 5G, artificial intelligence and green development, and empower the all-round cooperation between the two countries with new quality productive forces. On people-to-people ties, the two sides should raise the sail of friendship, make this year's China-Vietnam Year of People-to-People Exchanges a success, implement more "small and beautiful" livelihood projects, and make China-Vietnam friendship resonate in the hearts of the two peoples with cultural, tourism, media and sub-national exchanges, Xi said. Xi pointed out that in recent years, the role of the United Nations has been challenged, as unilateralism has clearly been on the rise and protectionism is making a comeback. Trade wars will undermine the international trading system, the stability of the global economic order and the legitimate interests of all countries in the world, especially developing countries, he said. As key members of the Global South, China and Vietnam should strengthen coordination and cooperation, safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core and the international order based on international law, and fulfill their responsibilities in promoting the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, said Xi. Luong Cuong described Xi's visit to Vietnam as a historic one, noting that Xi and General Secretary of the CPV Central Committee To Lam have reached extensive consensus on deepening bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperation, which will greatly strengthen mutual political trust, promote the bilateral friendship featuring "camaraderie plus brotherhood," and provide important strategic guidance for advancing the building of the Vietnam-China community with a shared future. China has made great achievements in its development under the guidance of the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, Luong Cuong said, adding that the Vietnamese side firmly believes that China will smoothly realize the Second Centenary Goal to build itself into a great modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious and beautiful, making greater contribution to regional and global peace and development. Luong Cuong said China is a top priority in Vietnam's foreign relations. The Vietnamese party, state and people attach great importance to developing relations with China, firmly adhere to the one-China policy, resolutely oppose "Taiwan independence" separatist activities, support China's stand on issues related to Xinjiang, Xizang and Hong Kong, and oppose any external forces interfering in China's internal affairs, he said. Vietnam is ready to maintain high-level exchanges with China, strengthen experience sharing on national governance, elevate the level of practical cooperation, and create more highlights in such fields as interconnectivity, high technology and environmental protection, he said. Vietnam is also willing to boost people-to-people exchanges and consolidate public support for bilateral relations, strengthen multilateral coordination and cooperation to enhance the international influence of the two countries, and properly handle differences and maintain maritime stability, he added. |

Xi urges China, Vietnam to deepen building of community with a shared future
习近平推动以命运共同体建设打造中越关系
Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Monday that China and Vietnam should strengthen their efforts on all fronts to build the China-Vietnam community with a shared future, and contribute more to peace, stability, development and prosperity in Asia and the world at large.
Xi made the remarks in a signed article titled "Building on past achievements and making new advances in pursuit of shared goals." The article was published on Monday by the Nhan Dan Newspaper of Vietnam ahead of his state visit to the Southeast Asian country. Xi said building the China-Vietnam community with a shared future that carries strategic significance serves the common interests of the two countries and is conducive to peace, stability, development and prosperity in the region and beyond. He called for deepening strategic mutual trust and advancing the socialist cause, continuing win-win cooperation and delivering more benefit to the two peoples, strengthening people-to-people exchanges and forging a closer bond between the two peoples, as well as enhancing multilateral collaboration and promoting Asia's prosperity and revitalization. The Chinese leader warned that trade war and tariff war will produce no winner, and protectionism will lead nowhere. "Our two countries should resolutely safeguard the multilateral trading system, stable global industrial and supply chains, and open and cooperative international environment," he added. "We should properly manage differences and safeguard peace and stability in our region," Xi said. "The successful delimitation of our boundaries on land and in the Beibu Gulf demonstrates that with vision, we are fully capable of properly settling maritime issues through consultation and negotiation." |

韩国宣布6月3日举行新一届总统选举
South Korea formally set June 3 for a snap presidential election following former President Yoon Suk-yeol's ouster from office last week, multiple media outlets said Tuesday.
The snap election date was confirmed at the Cabinet meeting, presided over by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who has served as acting president with Yoon's impeachment. The election day was designated as a temporary holiday. Yoon was ousted from office on April 4 with the constitutional court's unanimous ruling to uphold his impeachment motion by the National Assembly. By law, after a president's removal, an acting president is required to designate the date of a snap presidential election within 10 days, and the election should be held within 60 days. Yoon declared an emergency martial law on the night of December 3 last year, but it was revoked by the opposition-led National Assembly hours later. The impeachment motion against Yoon was passed in the parliament on December 14, and he was indicted on January 26 as a suspected ringleader of insurrection. |

Market panic mounts as world scrambles to temper Trump tariffs
随着世界争相缓和特朗普的关税,市场恐慌加剧
Wall Street braced Sunday for significant losses at the start of the week over Donald Trump's punishing tariffs on exports to the US, as oil prices plummeted even with countries seeking compromise with the defiant president.
The Republican denied Sunday he was intentionally engineering a market selloff and insisted he could not foresee market reactions, saying he would not make a deal with other countries unless trade deficits were solved. "Sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something," he said of the market pain that has seen trillions of dollars wiped off the value of US companies since the beginning of his tariff rampage. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, he added that he had engaged with world leaders on the issue to seek resolution over the weekend, claiming "they're dying to make a deal." Futures contracts for the New York Stock Exchange's main boards were sharply down Sunday, suggesting more pain for battered Wall Street stocks when markets open Monday, while US oil dropped below US$60 a barrel for the first time since April 2021. A little over half an hour after the contracts resumed trading at 10pm GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 3.56 percent, while the broader S&P 500 index was down 3.85 percent. 'Deals and alliances' Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel — which has been hit with 17 percent tariffs, despite being one of Washington's closest allies — will fly in for crunch talks with Trump Monday on the levies. Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned in a newspaper op-ed that "the world as we knew it has gone," saying the status quo would increasingly hinge on "deals and alliances." Trump's staggered deadlines have left space for some countries to negotiate, even as he insisted he would stand firm and his administration warned against any retaliation. "More than 50 countries have reached out to the president to begin a negotiation," Kevin Hassett, head of the White House National Economic Council, told ABC's This Week on Sunday, citing the US Trade Representative. Vietnam, a manufacturing powerhouse that counted the US as its biggest export market in the first quarter, has already reached out and requested a delay of at least 45 days to thumping 46 percent tariffs imposed by Trump. Hassett said countries seeking compromise were doing so "because they understand that they bear a lot of the tariffs," as the administration continues to insist that the duties would not lead to major price rises in the United States. "I don't think that you're going to see a big effect on the consumer in the US," he said. 'Markets bloodbath' Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also told NBC's Meet the Press that 50 countries had reached out. But as for whether Trump will negotiate with them, "I think that's a decision for President Trump," Bessent said. "At this moment he's created maximum leverage for himself... I think we're going to have to see what the countries offer, and whether it's believable," Bessent said. Other countries have been "bad actors for a long time, and it's not the kind of thing you can negotiate away in days or weeks," he claimed. Despite hopes for negotiations to avert the worst economic carnage, there was widespread fear that the markets bloodbath could continue into the new trading week. In Saudi Arabia, where the markets were open Sunday, the bourse was down 6.78 percent — the worst daily loss since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to state media. Larry Summers, formerly Director of the National Economic Council under president Barack Obama, said, "there is a very good chance there's going to be more turbulence in markets the way we saw on Thursday and Friday." Peter Navarro, Trump's tariff guru, has pushed back against the mounting nervousness and insisted to investors that "you can't lose money unless you sell," promising "the biggest boom in the stock market we've ever seen." |

Putin urges Russia, China to further strengthen strategic cooperation
普京称俄中应该进一步加强战略合作
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday called on Russia and China to consistently enhance their strategic cooperation amid global turbulence.
Putin made the remarks when meeting with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in the Kremlin. During the meeting, Putin conveyed his sincere greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping and expressed satisfaction over the effective implementation of the consensus reached between the two countries' heads of state. He noted that Russia-China relations continue to develop at a high level, with practical cooperation deepening in various fields and the ongoing "Russia-China Year of Culture" generating enthusiastic public support, further solidifying the foundation of bilateral friendship. Marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory in the Great Patriotic War this year, Putin extended an invitation for Chinese representatives to attend commemorative events in Russia. He emphasized the shared historical significance of celebrating victories over Nazi fascism and Japanese militarism, stating that Russia is fully making preparations for the occasion. He added that this milestone should propel Russia-China comprehensive strategic partnership to new heights and strengthen multilateral collaboration within frameworks such as the United Nations, Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and BRICS. Amid global turbulence, Putin stressed the need for both nations to consistently send a strong signal of enhanced strategic coordination to the world. Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, conveyed warm regards from Chinese President Xi Jinping to President Putin. He highlighted that under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, China-Russia relations have matured into a resilient and stable partnership characterized by deepening political trust, closer strategic alignment, and sustained practical cooperation. This cooperation, he noted, has safeguarded both nations' development and shared interests in major international and regional affairs. Wang said that China-Russia collaboration "never targets third parties" and remains impervious to external interference, emphasizing that the relationship will "keep broadening, not stagnate", with a vision oriented to the long-term future. He recalled that over 80 years ago, the peoples of China and the Soviet Union fought tenaciously on the Asian and European fronts, sacrificing immensely to defeat Japanese militarism and Nazi fascism, thereby contributing decisively to global peace. Today, as pivotal stabilizing forces in a turbulent world, China and Russia must jointly uphold the outcomes of World War II, defend the post-war international order, and reinforce the United Nations' central role in the global system. Both countries, he said, are committed to advancing multilateralism and democratizing international relations. He said that the two countries have aligned their plans to support each other's 80th-anniversary commemorative events, expressing confidence that the leaders' engagements this year will further promote bilateral ties. During his visit, Wang also held multiple rounds of talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to discuss bilateral and international issues. |

Multiple forces of PLA Eastern Theater Command conduct joint exercises around Taiwan Island
中国解放军东部战区举行联合演训
The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command on Tuesday started to conduct joint exercises around Taiwan Island, said a spokesperson.
The theater command organized its army, navy, air and rocket forces to close in on Taiwan Island from multiple directions, said Senior Colonel Shi Yi, the spokesperson for the theater command. According to Shi, these drills mainly focus on sea-air combat-readiness patrols, joint seizure of comprehensive superiority, assault on maritime and ground targets, and blockade of key areas and sea lanes to test the joint operation capabilities of the troops. The drills serve as a stern warning and forceful deterrent against "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, and are a legitimate and necessary action to safeguard China's sovereignty and national unity, Shi said. |

中国在南海东部海域探获亿吨油田
The China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced on Monday that it has discovered a major oilfield in the eastern South China Sea, with proven reserves exceeding 100 million tons.
The newly discovered Huizhou 19-6 oilfield marks a breakthrough in China's offshore oil exploration, as it is the country's first large-scale integrated clastic oilfield discovered in deep to ultra-deep layers, CNOOC said. Situated about 170 km from Shenzhen in south China's Guangdong Province, the oilfield sits at an average water depth of 100 meters. Test drilling has yielded a daily production of 413 barrels of crude oil and 68,000 cubic meters of natural gas, demonstrating its potential. According to the company, offshore oil and gas exploration in deep to ultra-deep layers faces multiple challenges, including high temperatures, high pressures, and complex conditions. Meanwhile, clastic reservoirs, an important component of deep-sea hydrocarbon deposits, generally have low permeability, making the identification of large oil and gas fields more difficult. Peng Guangrong, a geologist at CNOOC's Shenzhen branch, noted that 60 percent of the world's newly discovered oil and gas reserves have come from deep layers. With abundant resources and a low level of exploration, deep to ultra-deep layers are expected to drive future growth in oil and gas reserves and production. China's oil and gas exploration in the eastern South China Sea has seen consecutive breakthroughs, with oilfields exceeding 100 million tons in reserves discovered for two straight years, said CNOOC's CEO Zhou Xinhuai. |

Trump threatens to impose 'secondary tariffs' on Russian oil
特朗普威胁要对俄石油征收“二级关税”
US President Donald Trump said Sunday he may impose "secondary tariffs" on Russian oil if he believes Russia is at fault for not reaching a ceasefire with Ukraine.
In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump said he was "very angry" and "pissed off" when Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized the credibility of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's leadership, adding that the comments were "not going in the right location." "If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia's fault — which it might not be — but if I think it was Russia's fault, I am going to put secondary tariffs on oil, on all oil coming out of Russia," Trump said. "That would be that if you buy oil from Russia, you can't do business in the United States," he said. "There will be a 25 percent tariff on all oil, a 25- to 50-point tariff on all oil." Trump noted that the tariffs on Russia would come within the next month if Moscow does not sign up to a ceasefire with Ukraine. Trump said Putin knows he is angry, but he has "a very good relationship" with Putin and would speak to the Russian leader again this week. During a phone conversation on March 18, Trump and Putin agreed that the peace in Ukraine "will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire." |

Danish leaders reject US claims on Greenland, reaffirm sovereignty
丹麦首相拒绝美国购买格陵兰岛,重申格陵兰岛主权
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Thursday reaffirmed that Greenland remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark, rejecting recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, who said the United States would "go as far as they have to" to acquire the island.
"Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. That is not going to change," Frederiksen told Danish media. "Greenland belongs to the Greenlandic people," she added. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen also criticized what he called a "false narrative" in US political circles suggesting Greenland is eager to become American. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described Trump's rhetoric as a "veiled threat" and "deeply inappropriate," warning that the United States was escalating tensions. "It is the people of Greenland who determine Greenland's future," he said. Meanwhile, a demonstration has been planned in front of the US Embassy in Copenhagen on Saturday to protest what organizers call "unwanted pressure" from Washington. The White House announced Tuesday that Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, will visit Pituffik Space Base on Friday to meet US troops and review the security situation. Earlier plans for Usha Vance to attend cultural events in Nuuk and Sisimiut, including a dog sled race, have been canceled. Greenland had been a Danish colony until 1953 when it became an integral part of Denmark. In 1979, Greenland achieved home rule, gaining greater self-governance while Denmark retained authority over its foreign and defense policy. |
