据2024跨境赌博调查中国警方逮捕超11000嫌疑人
Chinese police arrested more than 11,000 suspects in the course of the investigation of 45 major cross-border gambling cases in 2024, the Ministry of Public Security announced on Thursday.
Public security authorities across China investigated and handled a total of 73,000 cases related to cross-border gambling and associated crimes last year, with over 4,500 online gambling platforms dismantled in the process, according to the ministry. The ministry added that these efforts had further strengthened the "overwhelming crackdown" on cross-border gambling activities – as the police had eradicated multiple recruitment networks and underground financial channels operated by major overseas gambling syndicates within China. In response to certain overseas cities luring Chinese tourists for gambling activities, relevant Chinese authorities introduced a tourism destination blacklist targeting cross-border gambling risks, imposing restrictions on listed destinations such as the suspension of outbound group tours. Restrictive measures targeting the first batch of blacklisted destinations were implemented in August 2020. |

中国发布寒潮蓝色预警
China's meteorological authority issued a blue alert for a cold wave on Wednesday. Temperatures will plunge in most parts of the country over the next few days.
According to the National Meteorological Center, a cold wave is expected to move across China, causing temperature drops of 6 to 8 degrees Celsius in the Huanghuai region – a geographical area that encompasses parts of several provinces, including Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shandong – and most parts to the north of the Huanghuai region. The NMC said the temperature will decline by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius in most parts of the southern region. In some regions, the temperature drop could exceed 10 degrees Celsius, it added. The NMC also issued a yellow alert for strong winds, saying that from Wednesday to Thursday, powerful winds are expected to hit some areas in the Xizang Autonomous Region, Qinghai Province, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and the northern region, as well as parts of the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East Sea, the Taiwan Strait, the Bashi Channel, and the South China Sea. China has a four-tier color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe warning, followed by orange, yellow and blue. |

美国邮政停收中国包裹
The US Postal Service (USPS) said Tuesday it was temporarily suspending inbound parcels from China's mainland and Hong Kong, shortly after President Donald Trump's imposition of fresh tariffs targeting China.
The halt will take place "until further notice," and follows Trump's order for an additional 10 percent levy on Chinese imports starting Tuesday. The order, unveiled over the weekend, also eliminated a duty-free exemption for low-value packages. The "de minimis" exemption allows goods valued at US$800 or below to come into the United States without paying duties or certain taxes. But it has faced scrutiny due to a surge in shipments claiming the exemption in recent years. US officials pointed to the growth of Chinese-founded online retailers Shein and Temu as a key factor behind this increase — and Tuesday's halt could delay parcels from both companies from entering the country. Washington has been looking to tighten the rule, saying the growth in shipments makes it harder to screen goods for security risks. However, the USPS gave no reason for its pause on Tuesday. Other retailers like Amazon might also be impacted. |

China brings back criminal suspect in cross-border human trafficking case
中国追回跨境贩卖人口犯罪嫌疑人
Chinese police have successfully apprehended and brought back a major criminal suspect involved in a high-profile case, in which a Chinese actor was deceived and illegally detained on the Thailand-Myanmar border.
The suspect, surnamed Yan, was returned to China on Saturday thanks to the joint efforts of a task force dispatched by China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) and the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, and with assistance from Thai law enforcement, the MPS said on Sunday. Several cases involving Chinese citizens being deceived and illegally detained on the Thailand-Myanmar border — where they were forced to participate in telecom and Internet fraud — have attracted widespread attention. Wang Xing, a Chinese actor, entered Thailand on January 3 but lost contact near the Thailand-Myanmar border. Thai police tracked his movements and successfully rescued him, identifying him as a victim of human trafficking. An MPS official stated that the police will intensify their efforts to deepen international law enforcement cooperation, launch a strong crackdown, and coordinate rescue operations to protect the personal safety and property of Chinese citizens. |

Xi speaks with Putin, calling on China, Russia to uphold int'l fairness, justice
习近平与普京会谈,称中俄维护国际公平正义
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday said he is willing to work with Russian President Vladimir Putin to continue guiding bilateral relations toward a new height in the new year.
Speaking with Putin in a video meeting, Xi called for coping with uncertainties of the external environment with the stability and resilience of China-Russia relations, jointly promoting the development and revitalization of the two countries, and upholding international fairness and justice. The two heads of state exchanged festive greetings for the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year. Xi recalled the three meetings he had with Putin last year, which led to a range of important common understandings. He also said last year marked the 75th anniversary of the China-Russia diplomatic relations, which feature permanent good-neighborly friendship, comprehensive strategic coordination and mutually beneficial cooperation, and have become increasingly dynamic. Xi also mentioned various activities held as part of the China-Russia Years of Culture, as well as steadily progressing pragmatic cooperation and growing bilateral trade. The close coordination between the two countries on multilateral platforms such as the United Nations (UN), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and BRICS has provided more positive energy for the reform and development of the global governance system, Xi said. He called on the two sides to continue deepening strategic coordination, firming up mutual support, and safeguarding the legitimate interests of the two countries. China and Russia should consolidate and expand bilateral relations and push for in-depth development of practical cooperation, Xi added. He noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victories of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the UN. China and Russia should take this as an opportunity to jointly defend the UN-centered international system and the outcomes of victory in World War II, promote all countries' adherence to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, uphold the universally recognized basic norms governing international relations, and practice true multilateralism, Xi stressed. He said as the rotating chair of the SCO, China is willing to work with Russia and other member states to usher in a new phase of the SCO featuring higher-quality development and greater responsibility. Xi also called on the two countries to jointly advance greater BRICS cooperation and write a new chapter of unity and self-improvement for the Global South. Putin said that Russia and China have always provided each other with trust and support, and treated each other as equals. Cooperation between the two sides is in the interests of the two peoples and has been unaffected by changes in the international landscape. He expressed satisfaction with the sustained positive momentum in bilateral trade and energy cooperation, the constant increase in mutual visits by people of the two countries, and the close communication and collaboration between the two sides on multilateral arenas. Putin said Russia firmly upholds the principle that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory and resolutely opposes "Taiwan independence" in any form. He noted that 80 years ago, the Russian and Chinese people resisted aggressors with their blood and lives, safeguarding their national sovereignty and dignity. He said that this year, the two sides will jointly commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War and defend the outcomes of World War II. Russia is willing to strengthen cooperation with China on multilateral affairs, and play a positive role in promoting world peace and development, Putin added. The two heads of state also engaged in in-depth discussions on international and regional issues of common concern, and agreed to maintain strategic communication in the new year. |
