China among countries upbeat on Ukraine peace talks, Russian reaction uncertain
中国对乌克兰和谈持积极态度,俄方反应尚不确定
China's foreign ministry said Beijing welcomes all efforts to reach a peaceful agreement as soon as possible to end the crisis in Ukraine. The comments came after the leaders of Ukraine and Europe met with President Donald Trump at the White House to discuss steps toward a permanent peace.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said the meeting was "the best so far." UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was "very pleased" with the outcome, but Finnish President Alexander Stubb warned that Putin "cannot be trusted." After the meeting on Monday, Trump said preparations for a face-to-face meeting between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin are underway. He also indicated the US will back Europe in giving Ukraine security guarantees to be activated in the event of future Russian attacks. Though the shape of guarantees is unclear. French President Emmanuel Macron suggested they might involve "boots on the ground." Russian reaction to the idea of one-on-one talks with Zelensky remains unclear. Though Putin told Trump in a phone call that he is open to the idea, the Kremlin hasn't publicly confirmed participation. Trump conceded on Tuesday that it's possible the Russian president isn't really interested in ending the war and would face a "rough situation" in that event. |

小米利润飙升,汽车业务收入同比暴增230%
Chinese smartphone and electric carmaker Xiaomi reported second-quarter net profit surged 75 percent from a year earlier to 10.8 billion yuan (US$1.5 billion) on a 31 percent increase in revenue to 116 billion yuan. 零跑汽车成功扭亏为盈
Chinese electric carmaker Leapmotor swung to a first-half net profit of 30 million yuan (US$4.2 million) from a year earlier loss of 2.2 billion yuan on a 174 percent surge in revenue to 24.3 billion yuan. The turnaround comes despite intense competition among domestic carmakers that has erupted at times into an industry price war. The Hangzhou-based company said deliveries surged to a record 221,600 vehicles in the six months. Leapmotor raised its full-year sales target for 2025 to up to 650,000 units and said it is aiming for annual sales of 1 million vehicles next year.
The company, founded in 2015, is 20 percent owned by Dutch-based Stellantis, the world's fifth largest automaker by sales volumes. In March, Leapmotor entered into a partnership with China automaker FAW to develop a model under the Hongqi brand to target overseas markets. |

特朗普称:泽连斯基与普京的会晤正在酝酿中
US President Donald Trump said arrangements are underway for a face-to-face meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who favors such a meeting, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has not, following talks with Zelensky and European leaders at the White House. A trilateral meeting involving himself would follow, Trump said. He interrupted the meeting at one point to make a 40-minute phone call to Putin.
Details of the White House meeting were sketchy as its ended, but Trump did say discussions included NATO-style security guarantees for Ukraine if Russian ever attacked again. No mention was made of any territorial concessions. Russia has demanded it retain control over the 20 percent of Ukraine it currently occupies, including takeover of the eastern industrial Donbas region, and assurances that Ukraine won't join NATO. Trump earlier said Ukraine will have to accept Russian control over Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014. Attending the White House meeting were the leaders of the EU, UK, France, Germany, Finland, Italy and NATO. |

阿尔特曼再担忧:AI投资热或现泡沫
OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman said investment in artificial intelligence may be forming a bubble not unlike the dot.com boom that went bust in the late 1900s. According to a report in The Verge, Altman told a small group of reporters last week that "when bubbles happen, smart people get overexcited about a kernel of truth. Are we in a phase where investors as a whole are overexcited about AI? My opinion is yes." His concerns about AI investment getting ahead of itself have been voiced by other industry experts and analysts. | |

Ukraine peace efforts shift to White House as Putin plan emerges
随着普京计划浮现,乌克兰和平努力转向白宫
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders will meet US President Donald Trump in the White House on Monday to discuss steps to end the deadliest European conflict since World War II. On the table is a reported peace plan proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin at his summit with Trump over the weekend.
Multiple global media are reporting that Putin wants to keep control of the roughly 20 percent of Ukrainian territory Russia now occupies, including complete control of the eastern industrial region of Donetsk. In return, Putin has agreed that Ukraine could have NATO-style security guarantees without actually joining the Western alliance. That would mean NATO, including the US, coming to the defense of Ukraine if Russia attacked again. Zelensky and European leaders in the past have said that ceding any territory to Russia would be tantamount to rewarding the aggressor who started the war. European leaders scheduled to attend the White House meeting are UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finland President Alexander Stubb, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO chief Mark Rutte. |

随着印美关系恶化,印中关系升温
A scheduled visit by US trade representatives to New Delhi later this month has been canceled, according to Indian media. Relations between the two countries deteriorated since President Donald Trump this month imposed a 25 percent blanket tariff on imports from India and added an additional 25 percent in duties, due to come into effect next week, as a penalty for India purchasing Russian oil.
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi begins a two-day trip to India today to discuss border issues, China's foreign ministry announced over the weekend. It's a sign of a continuing thaw in relations after border skirmishes five years ago that soured ties. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend to attend annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization that begins in Tianjin on August 31. |

China and India are in discussions on resuming direct flights after more than five years, China's Foreign Ministry confirmed. An Air India official said restoration of the flights may be announced later this month at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend.
